What is Mercurius iodatus ruber? Mercurius iodatus ruber is a homeopathic single remedy. It is made from red mercuric iodide. The Latin name is Hydrargyri biniodidum, and it is also called red or bin-iodide of mercury. Homeopaths have long used it for sore throats. They pick it when the pain starts on the left side, or is worst there. Swollen neck glands are part of that picture. It is sold as pills, pellets, liquid drops or granules. How does Mercurius iodatus ruber work? There is no accepted science to explain how this remedy could work. There is also no good trial evidence that it beats a dummy pill. Homeopathy rests on two ideas from the 1790s. The first is the law of like. It says a substance that causes symptoms in a well person can treat those same symptoms in a sick one. The second idea is about dilution. Each step waters the remedy down and shakes it hard. Homeopaths say this makes it act more strongly. That second idea goes against basic chemistry. Watering a thing down does not add power to it. Past a point, none of the starting material is left to act. What forms does Mercurius iodatus ruber come in? The usual shop forms are small sugar pellets, larger tablets and liquid drops. The drops sit in a base of water and alcohol. Granules and single-dose tubes are sold too. Potencies on the shelf run from low to high. Low ones include 3X, 6X and 6C. High ones include 30C, 200C and 1M. Low potencies of a mercury salt can still hold mercury you can measure. Ointments and triturations (powdered mixes) turn up in older homeopathic pharmacy work. These are not shop products. Do not buy or use them without a trained practitioner. Where it comes from: The remedy came into homeopathic use in the mid-1800s. Followers of Samuel Hahnemann tested mercury salts on healthy people. They wrote down the symptoms that came up. It appears in the classic materia medicas. These are reference books of remedy pictures, such as Boericke's. Since then it has been a steady part of homeopathic prescribing for throat complaints. That is a real record of use, not a record of proven effect.

Helps

What does Mercurius iodatus ruber help with? Sore throat, especially left-sided: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: a raw throat that begins on the left and may move to the right, worse on swallowing. No published human trial has tested it for sore throat. A sore throat with high fever, drooling or trouble breathing needs a doctor the same day. Tonsillitis: Homeopathic texts describe it for tonsils that look red and coated with patches. There is no trial evidence supporting this use. Bacterial tonsillitis can need antibiotics, so do not delay medical assessment. Swollen neck glands: Traditional homeopathic use covers tender, swollen glands alongside a throat infection. Evidence is limited to that written tradition. Glands that stay swollen for more than two weeks, or grow hard and painless, must be checked by a doctor. Hoarseness and loss of voice: Prescribers have used it for a rough, husky voice with throat soreness. No clinical trial has looked at this. A voice change lasting more than three weeks needs medical review. Thick nasal catarrh (thick mucus in the nose): Older materia medicas mention thick, stringy nasal discharge as part of the remedy picture. This rests on nineteenth-century symptom records, not on testing. Facial pain, fever and one-sided discharge lasting over ten days should be seen by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

The remedy came into homeopathic use in the mid-1800s. Followers of Samuel Hahnemann tested mercury salts on healthy people. They wrote down the symptoms that came up.

It appears in the classic materia medicas. These are reference books of remedy pictures, such as Boericke's.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius iodatus ruber need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius iodatus ruber?

  • Do not use if you have been given any potency below 12C or 24X, because a mercury salt at that strength may still contain mercury, a toxic heavy metal.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant: mercury crosses the placenta (the organ that feeds the baby) and can harm a developing brain.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, because mercury passes into breast milk.
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or young child without a doctor's supervision.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease of any kind, because mercury damages the kidneys.
  • Do not use if you have a thyroid disorder (a gland in the neck that sets your body's pace), because the source material contains iodine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to iodine or to iodine-based contrast dye.
  • Do not use if you are taking a chelating drug (medicine that pulls metals out of the body) such as penicillamine or DMSA.
  • Do not use if you are already using another mercury-containing product, such as an imported skin-lightening cream or traditional medicine.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of taking it in place of antibiotics for a bacterial throat infection.
  • Do not use if you have a severe sore throat with high fever, drooling, a stiff neck or trouble breathing or swallowing — get urgent medical care instead.
  • Do not use the alcohol-based liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, have liver disease, or take disulfiram or metronidazole.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if a sore throat comes with a fever above 38.5C, drooling, a stiff neck, a rash, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Go to an emergency department if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult.

Book an appointment if your symptoms have not improved in 48 hours, if neck glands stay swollen beyond two weeks, or if your voice stays hoarse for more than three weeks.

Stop taking it and seek medical advice straight away if you notice a metallic taste, mouth ulcers, heavy drooling, sore gums, tremor, numbness, mood or memory changes, or you are passing much less urine. These can be signs of mercury poisoning.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
