Mercurius solubilis

A long-standing staple of homeopathy (T2), but trials show no effect beyond placebo; evidence grade D.

What is Mercurius solubilis? Mercurius solubilis is a homeopathic remedy. Homeopaths reach for it when someone has a raw sore throat, mouth sores, ear pain, or thick discharge that smells bad. It is usually sold as small sugar pills or drops. It is a single drug in homeopathy, not a blend. Its Latin name is Mercurius solubilis Hahnemanni. It is also called Hahnemann's soluble mercury. The source material is a mercury salt. Mercury is a toxic heavy metal. The remedy is watered down again and again, so at common strengths like 30C not one atom of mercury is left. Here is the plain verdict. Trials of homeopathy do not show any effect beyond placebo (a dummy treatment). Long use inside a tradition is not proof that a thing works. How does Mercurius solubilis work? There is no known way this remedy could act on the body at common strengths. At 30C the pill is sugar and nothing else. Homeopathy rests on two ideas from the 1790s. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes signs in a well person is said to ease the same signs in a sick person. Mercury can cause drooling, mouth sores and foul breath, so homeopaths match it to those complaints. The second idea is that shaking a liquid hard at each step of watering down makes it stronger. Chemistry gives no support for this. No test has shown a difference between a shaken dilution and plain water. What people do feel is real, even so. Comfort, rest, time and the care of a practitioner all help, and colds and sore throats often settle on their own. What forms does Mercurius solubilis come in? You will most often see tiny white sugar pills that melt under the tongue. Drops in water and alcohol and small tablets are also sold. Labels show a strength such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The C scale means each step waters the last one down one hundred times. X means a ten-times step. The higher the number, the less source material is present. Anything at 12C or above contains none. Choose a made-up product from a known maker and never grind or mix raw mercury salts yourself. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, made this soluble form of mercury in 1788, before he founded homeopathy. Doctors of that era used mercury freely, above all for syphilis, and it poisoned many of them. Hahnemann later brought it into homeopathy and wrote it up in his own texts. Homeopaths call it a polychrest (a remedy they use for many different complaints). It has been a staple of homeopathic practice for about two hundred years.

Helps

What does Mercurius solubilis help with? Sore throat with pain on swallowing: This is the classic homeopathic picture: raw throat, worse at night, with a foul taste. No trial has tested Mercurius solubilis for sore throat against a dummy pill. Most sore throats settle in a week on their own, but a throat with high fever or trouble swallowing needs a doctor. Mouth ulcers and sore, bleeding gums: Homeopaths pick it for spongy gums, ulcers and a coated tongue that shows tooth marks. There is no human trial support for this use. Gum disease is treated by a dentist, and untreated gum infection damages bone and teeth. Ear pain with discharge: Traditional texts match it to ear pain with thick, smelly discharge. Trials of homeopathy for ear infection in children are small and weak, and none tested this remedy alone. Fluid or pus coming from an ear always needs a doctor's look. Toothache and gum boils: It is a long-standing choice for throbbing tooth pain that is worse at night. There is no trial evidence. A gum boil is a pocket of pus and needs dental care, since infection can spread to the face and neck. Heavy drooling and bad breath: Mercury poisoning causes drooling and foul breath, so the "like cures like" rule points here. That is a matching rule, not a test result. No human study supports the use. Night sweats: Homeopaths use it for sweats that soak the bed and bring no relief. No trial has looked at this. Repeated night sweats with weight loss or fever need a medical check, as they can signal serious illness. Skin sores that ooze pus: Traditional use covers boils and sores with yellow-green pus. There is no human trial evidence. Spreading redness, heat or fever means a bacterial infection that needs real treatment.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, made this soluble form of mercury in 1788, before he founded homeopathy.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius solubilis need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius solubilis?

  • Never take any product that lists a strength below 12C or below 24X, because it may still contain real mercury, a toxic heavy metal
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, as mercury can harm a developing baby
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Never give it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease
  • Do not use if you have a nerve or brain disorder, such as tremor or memory loss
  • Do not use in place of antibiotics or other medicine your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you are already being treated for metal poisoning
  • Do not use for a tooth abscess (a pocket of pus in the gum) instead of seeing a dentist
  • Never swallow or handle raw mercury salts, and never try to make this remedy yourself

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you have a sore throat with high fever, trouble swallowing, drooling you cannot control, or trouble breathing.

See a doctor within a day or two for ear pain with fluid or pus, a face or jaw that swells, a mouth sore that lasts more than three weeks, or night sweats with weight loss.

Get urgent help if you think you have taken real mercury. Warning signs include a metallic taste, sore gums, heavy drooling, shaking hands, numbness, or passing much less urine than usual.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
