What is Mercurius dulcis? Mercurius dulcis is a homeopathic remedy made from calomel. Calomel is a white salt of mercury. Its Latin name is Hydrargyri chloridum mite. The salt is watered down again and again. Each step is shaken hard. At 30C, none of the starting salt is left, and the pills are then mostly sugar. People take it for ear, mouth and throat complaints. Trials in people do not show it beats a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works, and we say that once here. How does Mercurius dulcis work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body. That is the plain answer. Homeopaths follow a rule they call 'like cures like'. Calomel in real doses causes sore gums, drooling and loose stools. So they give it, watered down, to people with those same signs. They also say that shaking leaves an imprint in the water. No test has shown such an imprint. At 30C there is no mercury left to act at all. So any change you feel is most likely placebo. Placebo means you feel better because you took something, not because of the drug itself. What forms does Mercurius dulcis come in? You will most often see small sugar pills, called pillules. Tablets and liquid drops are also sold. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. These hold no mercury. Some makers sell low strengths such as 1X, 3X or 6X. These may hold real mercury. Always read the strength on the label before you buy. Where it comes from: Calomel was a mainstream drug in the 1700s and 1800s. Doctors gave it to empty the bowels, and for fevers and syphilis. It poisoned many people. Teething powders for babies once held calomel. They caused 'pink disease', a mercury poisoning with a red rash and pain. Babies died, and the powders were banned. Homeopaths kept calomel as a watered-down remedy from the 1800s on. It is a known name in their books, but a minor one next to Mercurius solubilis.

Helps

What does Mercurius dulcis help with? Blocked or stuffy ears with fluid behind the eardrum: This is the best known use in homeopathy books. Writers pick it for ears that feel full and pop. No trial in people has tested it for this. Fluid behind the eardrum often clears on its own, so it is easy to credit a remedy by mistake. Sore, ulcerated mouth and gums: Homeopaths chose it for sore gums, bad breath and a metal taste. Those are the signs real calomel causes. There are no human trials for this use. Mouth sores that last more than two weeks need a dentist or doctor. Sore throat: Old books list it for a raw throat with swollen glands. It is not a first choice even within homeopathy. No human trial supports it. A throat with a high fever, or trouble swallowing, needs medical care instead. Sticky, sore eyes: Some texts use it for red eyes with thick discharge. This is traditional use only. No human trial supports it. Eye pain, or blurred sight, is a reason to be seen the same day. Loose, green stools in children: Calomel in real doses empties the bowels, so homeopaths picked it for loose green stools. This is a like-cures-like choice, not a tested one. No human trial supports it. A child with diarrhoea can dry out fast, and that needs real care. Complaints blamed on the liver or bile, such as pale stools: Calomel was once used to 'move the bile', so the idea carried into homeopathy. That old use was based on its harsh effects, not on proof. No human trial supports it. Pale stools, dark urine or yellow skin need a doctor, not a remedy.

Where it comes from:

Calomel was a mainstream drug in the 1700s and 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius dulcis need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius dulcis?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because mercury can harm an unborn baby
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, because mercury can pass into breast milk
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or a child, unless a doctor has told you to
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (any long-term damage to the kidneys)
  • Do not use if you have had a rash or other reaction to mercury before
  • Do not use if you are taking a chelating drug, that is a drug that pulls metals out of the body, such as penicillamine
  • Do not use if you already meet mercury elsewhere, such as at work or in a skin-lightening cream
  • Do not use if the label shows a low strength such as 1X, 3X or 6X, because real mercury may still be in it
  • Do not use if the label does not show the strength at all
  • Do not use if you would be taking it in place of a treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you cannot have lactose (milk sugar), unless the maker states the pills are lactose free

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor straight away if you get a metal taste, sore or bleeding gums, heavy drooling, or a red painful rash on the hands and feet. These can be signs of mercury poisoning.

Get urgent care for numbness, shaking hands, confusion, or passing much less urine than normal. Take the bottle with you so the doctor can see the strength.

Also see a doctor if an ear, throat or eye problem is worse after two days, or comes with a high fever, bad pain or trouble swallowing. A child with diarrhoea who is sleepy, dry-mouthed or not passing urine needs care the same day.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
