What is Mercurius iodatus flavus? Mercurius iodatus flavus is a homeopathic remedy. It is a single remedy made from yellow mercury iodide, a mercury salt. Its Latin name is Hydrargyri iodidum flavum, and it is also called yellow (proto-) iodide of mercury. Homeopaths reach for it most often for a sore throat that starts on the right side, with swollen glands in the neck and a thick coated tongue. It is also used for swollen tonsils and thick nasal mucus. The remedy is made by diluting the mercury salt again and again, with shaking at each step. At 30C, none of the starting salt is left. What you take is water, alcohol or a sugar pellet. Trials have not shown that homeopathic remedies work better than a dummy pill (placebo). Its standing rests on long use by homeopaths, and long use is not proof that something works. That point is made once here and not repeated below. How does Mercurius iodatus flavus work? Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like". A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person is given in tiny doses to a sick person with the same symptoms. No known body process explains this. After 30C, no atoms of the source salt remain, so there is nothing left to act on your body. When people feel better, the most likely reasons are placebo (feeling better because you expect to), the illness passing on its own, and the care and time given by the practitioner. What forms does Mercurius iodatus flavus come in? You will most often see sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in alcohol and plain tablets are also sold. Labels give a potency such as 6C, 30C, 3X or 6X. The number is how many times the salt was diluted, and the letter is the size of each step. Pellets and tablets often contain lactose (milk sugar). Liquid drops often contain alcohol. Where it comes from: Mercury salts were common drugs in the 1800s. Doctors used them for syphilis (an infection spread by sex) and for mouth and throat sores, often with harm to the patient. Homeopaths gave this salt to healthy people and wrote down every symptom it caused. Those notes became the remedy picture that homeopaths still follow today. It has a recognised place in homeopathic books, but it is not one of the tradition's most used remedies.

Helps

What does Mercurius iodatus flavus help with? Right-sided sore throat: This is the classic homeopathic picture for this remedy: pain that starts on the right and may move to the left, worse when you swallow. No human trial has tested the remedy for sore throat. A sore throat with high fever, a rash or trouble swallowing needs a doctor, not a home remedy. Swollen tonsils: Homeopathic books describe red, swollen tonsils with a yellow coating. Evidence here is limited to those case notes. Tonsillitis caused by bacteria can need antibiotics, so get it checked. Swollen glands in the neck: Tradition links this remedy to hard, tender glands under the jaw. There are no trials to support that use. A lump in the neck that does not go away within a few weeks should be seen by a doctor. Thick nasal mucus and blocked sinuses: Homeopaths use it for thick, yellow-green mucus at the back of the throat. This comes from remedy pictures, not from trials. Most sinus congestion clears on its own within ten days. Mouth and tongue soreness with heavy saliva: The remedy picture includes a thick coated tongue, bad breath and lots of saliva. These are also signs of real mercury poisoning, which is how the picture was first written down. No trial has tested the diluted remedy for mouth problems.

Where it comes from:

Mercury salts were common drugs in the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius iodatus flavus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius iodatus flavus?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because mercury can harm an unborn baby
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, because mercury can pass into breast milk
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or child, unless a doctor who knows that child agrees
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function (kidneys that do not filter your blood well)
  • Do not use if you have had mercury poisoning, or if you work with mercury
  • Do not use if you are allergic to mercury or to iodine
  • Do not use if you have a thyroid problem (a gland in your neck that sets your body's pace), because the source salt contains iodine
  • Do not use if the label shows a low potency such as 3X, 6X or anything below 12C, as real mercury may still be in it
  • Do not use if you are taking a chelating drug such as penicillamine, DMSA or DMPS to remove metals from your body
  • Do not use if you would be taking it instead of antibiotics your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have a sore throat with high fever, drooling, a rash or trouble breathing; get medical help straight away
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets contain it
  • Do not use the alcohol drops if you are avoiding alcohol, or if you take disulfiram or metronidazole

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within a day if your sore throat comes with a fever over 38.5C, white patches on your tonsils, a rash, or pain that stops you swallowing food and drink.

Go to hospital now if you cannot swallow your own saliva, your voice is muffled, your neck is stiff and swollen, or you have trouble breathing.

Stop the remedy and call a doctor if you get a metal taste, sore or bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, lots of saliva, shaky hands, numbness, or you pass much less urine than usual. These can be signs of mercury harm.

Also check with a doctor if a swollen gland in your neck lasts more than three weeks, or if symptoms are no better after two days.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
