Bromum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials of Bromum itself, and homeopathy trials overall match placebo. Traditional tier T1: a recognised homeopathic

What is Bromum? Bromum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from bromine, a sharp-smelling liquid chemical. Homeopaths give it most often for barking coughs, hoarse voice and swollen neck glands. It is a single remedy, not a blend. Its Latin name is Bromium. You may also see it sold as Bromine. The source is watered down again and again, then shaken hard. At the usual 30C strength, no bromine is left. What you take is a sugar pellet or a few drops in alcohol and water. Here is the short verdict. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in one tradition is not proof that a thing treats disease, so use Bromum only alongside real care, never in place of it. How does Bromum work? Bromum is said to work by the homeopathy rule of "like cures like". The idea is that a chemical that causes signs in a well person can ease the same signs in a sick one. Homeopaths also say that shaking the liquid leaves a trace of the source's "pattern" in the water. Science has found no such trace. There is no known way this could act on the body. At 30C there is no bromine left to do anything. So if you feel better, the most likely reasons are the illness passing or a placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Bromum come in? Bromum comes as small sugar pellets, small tablets, or liquid drops. Pellets and drops are the most common forms. Strengths are marked 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C. The letter C means each step watered it down 1 part in 100. The number tells you how many times that step was done. You may also see 1X, 3X or 6X. Here X means 1 part in 10. These are weaker dilutions and may still hold traces of the source. Many liquid drops are made with alcohol. Check the label if you avoid alcohol. Where it comes from: Bromine was found by a French chemist in 1826. Homeopaths began testing it on healthy people soon after, in the 1830s and 1840s. It won a small but steady place in homeopathic books. Writers linked it to croupy coughs, hoarse voice and swollen neck glands. It has never been one of homeopathy's big everyday remedies. It sits in the second rank, known but not widely used.

Helps

What does Bromum help with? Croupy, barking cough in children: This is the classic homeopathic use for Bromum. Old books describe a dry, ringing cough that is worse in a warm room. No trial has tested Bromum for croup. Croup can block a child's airway, so worsening breathing is an emergency, not a job for pellets. Hoarse voice and laryngitis (a sore, swollen voice box): Homeopaths pick Bromum when the voice is rough and talking hurts. This use rests on old case notes only. Most laryngitis clears on its own in a week or two. See a doctor if your voice stays rough for more than three weeks. Swollen glands in the neck: Bromum has a long link in homeopathy with hard, swollen neck glands and thyroid swelling. There is no trial evidence for this at all. A lump in the neck that grows, or lasts more than a few weeks, needs a doctor's check. Wheezy breathing: Some homeopathic texts suggest Bromum for wheeze that eases near the sea. No study supports this. Never swap an asthma inhaler for Bromum. Wheeze that gets worse fast needs urgent help. Sore, raw throat: It is sometimes given for a raw, scraping throat. The support is tradition only, not trials. Most sore throats settle in a few days. Trouble swallowing, drooling or a high fever means see a doctor now. Acne-like spots: Old texts note spots and boils in people exposed to bromine, so homeopaths use it for similar spots. No trial backs this. Proven acne treatments are easy to get from a pharmacy or doctor.

Where it comes from:

Bromine was found by a French chemist in 1826.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Bromum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Bromum?

  • Do not use if you or your child is struggling to breathe, making a harsh noise when breathing in, or turning blue — call emergency services instead
  • Do not use if you are having an asthma attack, or if you are thinking of using it in place of an inhaler
  • Do not use if you plan to stop or delay any medicine your doctor prescribed
  • Do not use if you have ever reacted badly to bromine or to bromide salts
  • Do not use if you have a thyroid problem (a gland in the neck that sets body speed) and the pack is a low strength such as 1X, 3X or 6X
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and the pack is a low strength such as 1X, 3X or 6X, since these may still hold bromide
  • Do not use if you cannot have alcohol: this rules out alcohol-based drops for young children and for people in recovery
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under 1 year, unless your doctor says yes
  • Do not use if you cannot handle lactose (milk sugar) and the tablets are lactose-based
  • Do not use if you are treating a lump in the neck, a cough lasting weeks, or coughed-up blood — these need a doctor first

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help if you or your child has hard, noisy or fast breathing, cannot swallow, is drooling, or has blue lips.

See a doctor soon if a cough or sore throat lasts more than a week, if a fever stays above 38.5C, or if a hoarse voice lasts more than three weeks.

Also see a doctor if a neck lump grows or does not go, if you lose weight without trying, or if you feel oddly sleepy and muddled after using a low-strength product.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
