Baryta carbonica

Evidence grade insufficient: no trial shows an effect beyond a dummy pill. Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of homeopathy alone.

What is Baryta carbonica? Baryta carbonica is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from barium carbonate, a white mineral powder. Homeopaths give it for slow growth in children, swollen tonsils, and memory loss in old age. The raw mineral is a poison. In homeopathy it is diluted over and over in water and alcohol. At 30C, the usual strength, no barium is left in the pill. Trials do not show that it beats a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy acts on the body. This page reports both things side by side. How does Baryta carbonica work? Homeopathy rests on one idea: a tiny dose of a substance is said to treat the signs that a big dose causes. Large doses of barium cause weak muscles and foggy thinking. So the remedy is given for weakness, slow thought and slow growth. There is no known way this could work. At 30C the pill holds no barium at all. A chemist would find only sugar, water or alcohol. The most likely reason people feel better is simple. Time passes, the illness runs its course, and kind attention helps. Belief in the pill plays a part too. What forms does Baryta carbonica come in? You can buy it as small sugar pills, tiny round pellets, or drops in water and alcohol. Some brands sell a cream, but pills are by far the most common form. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The letter shows the size of each dilution step: C means one part in a hundred, X means one part in ten. A bigger number means more steps and less source material. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who began homeopathy, tested barium carbonate in the early 1800s. He wrote down the signs it caused and added it to the homeopathic materia medica (the reference book of remedies). Older Western medicine had used barium salts for swollen neck glands. The same salt was also sold as rat poison. Baryta carbonica has stayed a well known homeopathic remedy for about 200 years .

Helps

What does Baryta carbonica help with? Slow development in children: This is the classic use in homeopathic books. The picture described is a shy child who is small, slow to speak and slow to learn. No trial has tested this remedy for it. A child who is slow to reach milestones needs a doctor's check, not a home remedy. Swollen tonsils and repeat sore throats: Homeopaths give it for tonsils that swell again and again after each cold. The book picture includes a child who gets sore throats from any chill. There is no trial support. A sore throat with high fever, drooling or trouble swallowing needs urgent medical care. Swollen glands in the neck: Old homeopathic texts list hard, swollen glands under the jaw and behind the ears. No human study backs this. A lump in the neck that lasts more than two weeks or keeps growing must be checked by a doctor. Memory loss and confusion in older people: Homeopaths use it for an older person who forgets names, loses the thread of a task and feels unsure. No trial supports it for memory loss. Memory change has many causes, some treatable, so ask a doctor before trying anything. Shyness and low confidence: The remedy picture is a person who hides from strangers and feels watched or laughed at. This comes from homeopathic case notes, not from studies. No trial has tested it for shyness or anxiety. Feeling tired and weak: Weak muscles are part of the picture, drawn from what real barium poisoning does. The diluted remedy has not been tested for tiredness in people. Lasting tiredness deserves a proper check-up.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who began homeopathy, tested barium carbonate in the early 1800s. He wrote down the signs it caused and added it to the homeopathic materia medica (the reference book of remedies).

Older Western medicine had used barium salts for swollen neck glands. The same salt was also sold as rat poison. Baryta carbonica has stayed a well known homeopathic remedy for about 200 years.

Who should avoid Baryta carbonica?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is safe.
  • Do not use if you would give it to a baby or young child before a doctor has checked that child.
  • Do not use if you have low potassium (a low level of a blood salt your heart needs), because a low strength could hold real barium and lower it further.
  • Do not use if you have a heart rhythm problem, or take digoxin or a water pill (diuretic), without asking your doctor first.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease, since damaged kidneys clear barium poorly.
  • Do not use if you cannot see a clear strength on the label, such as 30C, because low strengths like 3X or 6X may still hold real barium.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of taking raw barium carbonate powder instead of the diluted remedy, as the raw mineral is a poison and was once sold as rat poison.
  • Do not use if you would stop or delay a prescribed medicine in order to take it.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar), as most pills are made with it.
  • Do not use if you have a sore throat with high fever, drooling or trouble swallowing, as that needs a doctor now.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor, rather than reaching for this remedy, if a child is slow to talk, walk or grow. Get medical help for a neck lump that lasts over two weeks or keeps growing.

Get help the same day for a sore throat with high fever, drooling, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Get help quickly for new confusion or memory loss, since some causes can be treated.

Call emergency services if anyone swallows raw barium carbonate powder. Signs of barium poisoning include vomiting, stomach cramps, weak or floppy muscles, a fast or odd heartbeat, and trouble breathing.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
