What is Hippozaeninum? Hippozaeninum is a homeopathic remedy. It is also called the glanders nosode. A nosode is a remedy made from a germ or from diseased tissue. The source is discharge from a horse with glanders. Glanders is a rare horse disease. The germ behind it is Burkholderia mallei. The source is watered down again and again in the homeopathic way. At 30C, no source material is left in the pill. Only the sugar or water carrier is left. Homeopaths have given it for long-lasting nose and sinus trouble. The picture they describe is thick, smelly discharge with crusts. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that something works. These are two separate things. We report both, and we keep them apart. How does Hippozaeninum work? There is no known way this remedy could act on your body. Homeopathy holds that a tiny dose treats what a large dose would cause. It also holds that shaking each step leaves a trace of the source behind. Chemistry does not support this idea. At 30C the source has been watered down far past the point where any of it is left. So there is nothing in the pill to act on. Any change you feel is most likely a placebo effect. That means a real sense of feeling better that comes from the act of taking something, and from time passing. What forms does Hippozaeninum come in? You will most often see it as small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Common forms: Sugar pellets or tablets, often made with lactose (milk sugar). Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Strengths sold as 6C, 12C, 30C, and 200C. Higher numbers mean more watering down, not more strength in any measured sense. Where it comes from: This remedy comes from 19th-century homeopathy in Europe and North America. Nosodes were brought in by Constantine Hering in the 1830s. Hippozaeninum appears in old homeopathic reference books, such as John Henry Clarke's dictionary of materia medica. It was never a main remedy. It sat at the edge of the materia medica, used for stubborn nose and sinus states. Its standing rests on old case notes, not on testing.

Helps

What does Hippozaeninum help with? Long-lasting sinus problems with thick, smelly discharge: This is the main use in old homeopathic texts. No human trial has tested the remedy for it. Thick green or yellow discharge that lasts more than ten days should be checked by a doctor. Ozaena (a nose condition with crusts and a bad smell): Old texts match the remedy to this picture. There is no trial evidence. Ozaena has known causes and known medical treatment, so see a doctor first. Crusting and sores inside the nose: Homeopaths chose it for raw, crusted nostrils. No trial has looked at this. Sores that bleed or do not heal need a medical check. Swollen glands in the neck: Listed in old case notes. There is no testing behind it. Glands that stay swollen for weeks should be looked at by a doctor. Old, slow-healing skin sores (historical use only): This use comes from 19th-century writing and is not used much now. No trial supports it. Sores that will not heal can be a sign of poor blood flow, diabetes, or infection.

Common forms:

Sugar pellets or tablets, often made with lactose (milk sugar).

Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base.

Strengths sold as 6C, 12C, 30C, and 200C. Higher numbers mean more watering down, not more strength in any measured sense.

Where it comes from:

This remedy comes from 19th-century homeopathy in Europe and North America.

Who should avoid Hippozaeninum?

  • Do not use if you have a fever, a spreading infection, or blood poisoning, and never use it in place of antibiotics
  • Do not use if you have been near sick horses and feel unwell, as glanders is a serious infection that needs urgent medical drugs
  • Do not use if you have a weak immune system from illness or from drugs like chemotherapy or steroids, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you have a bottle marked below 12C, as very low strengths may still hold material from a dangerous germ
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is fine
  • Do not use if you are thinking of giving it to a baby or child instead of getting medical care
  • Do not use if you plan to stop a prescribed medicine in order to try it
  • Do not use if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar), unless the pellets are lactose-free
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or must avoid alcohol, as liquid drops contain alcohol

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor soon if your nose or sinus symptoms last more than ten days. Get help the same day for a fever, pain or swelling around the eye or face, a bad headache, or thick discharge with chills.

Go to the emergency department for trouble breathing, a stiff neck, confusion, or heavy nosebleeds that will not stop.

Also see a doctor for a sore that will not heal, lumps in the neck that stay for weeks, or losing weight without trying. If you work with horses and feel ill, say so, as glanders is rare but very serious.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
