What is Ferrum iodatum? Ferrum iodatum is a homeopathic single remedy made from iron iodide. Its Latin name is Ferri iodidum. It is also called iron iodide, and it is given on its own, not as part of a mix. Homeopaths reach for it mainly for swollen neck glands, long-lasting catarrh (thick mucus in the nose or throat), and for people who look pale and feel weak and tired. Some also use it for an enlarged thyroid gland in the neck. Like all homeopathic remedies, it is made by diluting the starting material again and again. At 30C, essentially none of the original iron iodide is left in the pill. Trials have not shown that homeopathic remedies work better than a placebo (a dummy pill), and long use in a tradition is not proof that something works. How does Ferrum iodatum work? Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like". The theory says a substance that causes symptoms in a well person can ease those same symptoms once it is made very dilute. Making the remedy means diluting it over and over, with hard shaking at each step. Homeopaths say this leaves an imprint of the starting material in the liquid. Science has found no way for that to happen. At 30C, essentially no iron iodide remains. So the remedy cannot act on the body the way a drug acts. Any change you notice is best explained by placebo effect, time, and normal ups and downs in how you feel. Low potencies are a different matter. Forms such as 3X or 6X can still hold small amounts of real iron and iodine. Those amounts can act in the body, which is why the safety notes below matter. What forms does Ferrum iodatum come in? You will usually find it as small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in an alcohol and water base are also common. Tablets and powders made by grinding the salt with lactose (milk sugar) are used at low strengths. Typical labels are 3X, 6X, 6C, 12C and 30C. The higher the number, the more it has been diluted. Where it comes from: Ferrum iodatum appears in homeopathic materia medica (the reference books that list remedies) from the 1800s. Homeopaths linked it to swollen glands, thyroid swelling and pale, run-down states. Iron and iodine were both mainstream medicines in that era. Doctors gave iron for anaemia (low iron in the blood) and iodine for goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck). The homeopathic remedy borrowed that picture, then diluted the salt far past the point where any of it remains.

Helps

What does Ferrum iodatum help with? Swollen glands in the neck: This is the classic use in homeopathic books. The remedy picture describes hard, slow-to-settle glands under the jaw and along the neck. No human trial has tested Ferrum iodatum for swollen glands. Glands that stay swollen for more than two weeks need a doctor, not a home remedy. Long-lasting catarrh (thick mucus in the nose or throat): Homeopaths use it for thick nasal mucus and dripping at the back of the throat that drags on for weeks. There is no trial evidence for this use. Most catarrh clears on its own, which makes any remedy look effective. Enlarged tonsils: Older homeopathic texts list it for tonsils that stay big between infections, often alongside swollen neck glands. This has not been tested in people. Trouble breathing or swallowing needs medical care. Goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck): The remedy was chosen because iodine affects the thyroid gland. At 30C no iodine remains, so the remedy cannot act on the thyroid. Low potencies may contain real iodine, which can upset thyroid function rather than help it. A lump or swelling in the neck needs a doctor and a blood test. Pale, tired, run-down states linked to anaemia (low iron in the blood): Homeopaths describe a pale, weak, easily tired person who still has a flushed face. Ferrum iodatum at 30C contains no iron and will not correct anaemia. Real anaemia needs a blood test and proper iron treatment if it is confirmed.

Where it comes from:

Ferrum iodatum appears in homeopathic materia medica (the reference books that list remedies) from the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Ferrum iodatum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Ferrum iodatum?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant: iodine crosses to the baby and can harm the baby's thyroid gland
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as iodine passes into breast milk
  • Do not use if you have a thyroid problem such as an overactive or underactive thyroid, or a goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck), unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you take lithium, carbimazole, methimazole, propylthiouracil or amiodarone (a heart-rhythm medicine)
  • Do not use if you take levothyroxine or any other thyroid hormone medicine, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you have haemochromatosis or any other condition that makes your body store too much iron
  • Do not use if you are allergic to iodine
  • Do not use if you plan to give it to a child: low-potency iron can poison a young child, and all iron products must be kept locked away
  • Do not use if you are relying on it instead of treatment for anaemia (low iron in the blood), an infection, or a lump in the neck
  • Do not use if you take blood pressure medicines that raise potassium, such as ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers or potassium-sparing water tablets

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a swollen gland or lump in your neck lasts more than two weeks, keeps growing, or feels hard and fixed in place.

Book an appointment if you have a fever that will not settle, night sweats, weight loss you cannot explain, or ongoing tiredness and paleness. These need tests, not a home remedy.

Get urgent help if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, a racing or uneven heartbeat, or a swollen face, lips or throat.

Call emergency services straight away if a child swallows any iron-containing product. Iron poisoning in children can kill, and early symptoms can look mild.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
