Ferrum muriaticum

Recognised in homeopathic texts since the 1800s, but no human trial evidence supports it; at 30C no iron remains.

What is Ferrum muriaticum? Ferrum muriaticum is a homeopathic remedy made from iron chloride. Its Latin name is Ferri chloridum. You may also see it called iron chloride or ferrum mur. It is a single drug remedy. That means it is made from one starting material, not a blend. Homeopaths pick it for tiredness with pale skin, sudden loose stools, and pain in the right shoulder. The evidence is weak. The iron chloride is diluted again and again. At a 30C strength, none of the starting iron is left. Trials do not tell such remedies apart from a dummy pill (placebo). Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. Both facts sit on this page side by side. How does Ferrum muriaticum work? There is no accepted way this remedy could work in the body, and you should know that up front. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes a symptom in a well person is said to treat that symptom in a sick person. The second is that shaking and diluting a substance makes it act more strongly. The making process explains the problem. The iron chloride is mixed with water or alcohol, shaken, and diluted. This is repeated many times. Each C step is a 1-in-100 dilution. By 30C, the odds of even one atom of iron being left in your pill are effectively zero. So any change you feel is most likely down to time, care and belief, not to iron. Low strengths are different. Forms such as 1X or 3X are diluted far less and can still hold a real, if small, amount of iron. That matters for people who must not take extra iron. What forms does Ferrum muriaticum come in? Ferrum muriaticum is sold in a few simple forms. Common forms include: Small round sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Tablets made with milk sugar (lactose). Strengths on the label are usually 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C. Low decimal strengths such as 3X are sold as tissue salts and may still contain a trace of iron. Where it comes from: Iron salts have been used in medicine for hundreds of years, mostly for weakness and pale skin. Homeopathy began in Germany in the late 1700s with Samuel Hahnemann. His followers tested many mineral salts, including iron chloride, in the 1800s. They wrote down the symptoms these caused in healthy volunteers and built remedy pictures from them. Ferrum muriaticum has stayed in homeopathic reference books since then. It is a recognised name in that one tradition, not a shared remedy across many healing systems.

Helps

What does Ferrum muriaticum help with? Tiredness with pale skin: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Ferrum muriaticum. Books describe a person who tires fast, looks pale, yet flushes red in the face. No human trials test the remedy for this. Tiredness with pale skin can mean low iron in the blood (anaemia), which needs a blood test and real treatment. Sudden, painless loose stools: Homeopaths use it for watery stools that come on without warning and without cramping, often at night or after eating. We found no human trials of this remedy for diarrhoea. Loose stools that last more than a few days, or that hold blood, need a doctor. Right shoulder and arm pain: Old homeopathic texts link this remedy to aching in the right shoulder that is worse at rest and better for slow movement. There is no trial evidence for this use. It rests only on symptom pictures written down in the 1800s. Flushing of the face: The remedy picture includes a face that reddens easily even when the person feels weak and cold. No human studies support this. Repeated flushing can have medical causes worth checking. Nosebleeds: Some homeopathic guides list it for nosebleeds in pale, easily tired people. No trials support it. Frequent or heavy nosebleeds should be looked at by a doctor, as they can point to a clotting problem. Bedwetting in children: A few older texts mention it for children who wet the bed and look pale by day. There is no trial evidence. Bedwetting has well studied treatments, and a doctor or nurse can help you find one.

Common forms include:

Small round sugar pellets that melt under the tongue.

Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base.

Tablets made with milk sugar (lactose).

Strengths on the label are usually 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C. Low decimal strengths such as 3X are sold as tissue salts and may still contain a trace of iron.

Where it comes from:

Iron salts have been used in medicine for hundreds of years, mostly for weakness and pale skin.

Who should avoid Ferrum muriaticum?

  • Do not use this instead of treatment your doctor has prescribed, and never stop a prescribed medicine to try it
  • Do not use iron-containing low strengths, such as 3X or mother tincture, if you have haemochromatosis (an inherited illness that makes the body store too much iron)
  • Do not use iron-containing low strengths if you have had repeated blood transfusions or any other form of iron overload
  • Do not take a low strength iron product if you are already taking prescribed iron tablets or having iron drips
  • Never leave any iron-containing product where a child can reach it, because swallowing iron can kill a young child
  • Do not give this to a baby or child without asking a doctor or pharmacist first
  • Do not use the alcohol-based drops if you are pregnant, avoiding alcohol, or taking disulfiram or metronidazole (medicines that react badly with alcohol)
  • Do not use the lactose (milk sugar) tablets if you cannot digest lactose
  • Do not rely on this for tiredness or pale skin until a blood test has shown what is causing it

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you feel very tired, look pale, get short of breath on light effort, or your heart races. These can be signs of low iron in the blood (anaemia) or of bleeding somewhere.

Book an appointment if loose stools last more than a few days, if you see blood in your stool, or if nosebleeds keep coming back.

Get help the same day if you have black, tarry stools, bad stomach pain, or you vomit blood.

Call emergency services if a child swallows iron tablets or iron drops, even if the child seems fine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
