What is Ferrum picricum? Ferrum picricum is a homeopathic remedy. Its Latin name is Ferri picras. It is also known as iron picrate. It is made from an iron salt of picric acid. The remedy is serially diluted. That means the source is mixed with water or alcohol, shaken, then mixed and shaken again, many times over. At 30C, no source material is left. 30C means the mix was watered down 100 times over, 30 times in a row. What you take is the carrier only: water, alcohol, or a sugar pill. Homeopaths have used it for warts on the hands. Some have also used it for an enlarged prostate (a gland near the bladder) in older men, tired eyes, and ringing in the ears. Trials do not show that it works better than a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. This page reports both, and keeps them apart. How does Ferrum picricum work? No one has shown a way this remedy could work in the body. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. One is that a substance which causes symptoms can ease them when given in tiny amounts. The other is that shaking leaves a trace or imprint of the source in the liquid. Chemistry does not support the second idea. At 30C there is no iron and no picric acid left to act on you. So any change you notice is best explained in other ways. It may be placebo, the normal ups and downs of a problem, or the time and care a homeopath gives you. What forms does Ferrum picricum come in? Most people meet it as small sugar pills that melt under the tongue. It also comes as liquid drops, usually made with alcohol. A few shops sell it as a spray or as sugar granules. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. Homeopaths use 30C most often. Low decimal strengths, such as 3X and 6X, are watered down far less. These may still hold traces of the raw salt, so they are not the same thing as a 30C pill. Where it comes from: Picric acid was made in the 1800s. It was used as a yellow dye and in explosives. Homeopaths began testing salts of it soon after. Ferrum picricum is the iron salt. It appears in homeopathic reference books from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those books list it mainly for warts in crops on the hands, and for prostate trouble in older men. It has stayed a minor remedy. Some homeopaths use it; many never do.

Helps

What does Ferrum picricum help with? Warts on the hands: This is the best-known use in the tradition. Old homeopathic books describe warts growing in small crops on the backs of the hands. No human trials have tested this remedy for warts. Many warts also clear on their own over months, which makes any single case hard to read. See a doctor about any wart or mole that bleeds, itches, or changes shape, size or colour. Enlarged prostate (a gland near the bladder) in older men: Homeopathic texts list it for a slow, weak urine stream in older men. There is no trial evidence that it helps. An enlarged prostate can also hide other causes of the same symptoms. Get checked by a doctor first. Do not swap proven medicines for this remedy. Tired, aching eyes from close work: Tradition links the remedy with eye strain after long reading or fine work. No human trials support this. Rest, better light, and an eye test are the steps with real backing. Sudden vision loss, eye pain or flashing lights need same-day care. Ringing in the ears (tinnitus): Some older sources mention noises in the ears alongside the other keynotes. The evidence here is traditional only. No trial has tested this remedy for tinnitus. New ringing in one ear, or ringing with hearing loss or dizziness, should be checked. Heavy, weak-feeling legs: Homeopathic books describe a dragging, tired feeling in the legs and lower back. There is no trial evidence for this use. Many other causes are common, from low iron to nerve problems. Sudden weakness, numbness, or a swollen painful calf needs urgent care.

Where it comes from:

Picric acid was made in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Ferrum picricum?

  • Do not use if you have a wart, mole or skin lump that is changing shape, size or colour — have it looked at instead
  • Do not use if you cannot pass urine, or if there is blood in your urine — this needs urgent care
  • Do not use if you have an enlarged prostate (a gland near the bladder) that a doctor has not yet checked
  • Do not use low potencies such as 3X or 6X, which may hold traces of real picric acid
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or liver disease, unless your doctor says it is fine
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not give it to a baby or a child without advice from a doctor
  • Do not use the alcohol drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or if you avoid alcohol
  • Do not use the standard pills if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar) — ask for a lactose-free form
  • Do not stop, lower or delay any medicine your doctor gave you in order to take this
  • Do not use it to treat low iron (anaemia, or too few red blood cells); it holds no usable iron

When should you see a doctor?

Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine at all, or if you pass blood in your urine. Go the same day for sudden eye pain or loss of vision.

See a doctor soon if a wart or mole bleeds, itches, or changes in any way. Also see one for a new lump, night sweats, weight loss you cannot explain, or a fever.

Book a normal appointment if your urine stream is getting weaker, if ringing in the ears is new or in one ear only, or if your legs feel weak. And see a doctor if nothing has improved after two to four weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
