Acidum picricum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials test this remedy, and homeopathy overall has not beaten placebo. Traditional tier T1: a recognised minor

What is Acidum picricum? Acidum picricum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from picric acid, a yellow chemical whose Latin name is trinitrophenol. Homeopaths give it most often for a tired, worn-out mind after long study or worry. The remedy is made by diluting the source over and over, with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, the usual strength, no molecules of picric acid are left. You are taking a sugar pellet or a drop of water and alcohol. Trials do not show that this remedy works better than a dummy pill. Its standing rests on long use by homeopaths, not on proof. Traditional use is not the same as proof of effect. How does Acidum picricum work? There is no known way for a 30C dilution to act on the body, and that is the honest starting point. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease those symptoms in a sick one. The second is that shaking and diluting make a remedy act more strongly, not less. Chemistry does not back the second idea. Once a liquid is diluted past about 12C, none of the starting material is left in it. A 30C pellet is far past that point. So any change you feel is best explained in other ways. Time, rest, the care of a practitioner, and the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to) all play a part. What forms does Acidum picricum come in? You will usually find it as small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Common forms are: - Sugar pellets or globules - Soft tablets that dissolve in the mouth - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base Common strengths sold to the public are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Higher numbers mean more dilution steps, not more chemical. Very low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X may still contain real picric acid and are best avoided. Where it comes from: Picric acid was made in a lab in the 1800s. It was used as a yellow dye and later in explosives and in some old wound dressings. Homeopaths tested it on healthy people in the late 1800s in the United States and in Europe. Those testers reported deep tiredness, heavy legs and a headache at the back of the head after mental work. From that, the remedy gained a small but steady place in homeopathic books for what old texts called "brain fag" (mental burn-out) in students and clerks. It has stayed a minor remedy rather than a famous one.

Helps

What does Acidum picricum help with? Mental tiredness after long study or desk work: This is the main traditional use. Homeopathic texts describe a person who feels worn out by thinking, cannot take in one more page, and wants to lie down. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Headache at the back of the head from mental strain: Old homeopathic provings report a dull, heavy ache low at the back of the head that gets worse with study and better with rest. This is a traditional picture only, with no trial support. Heavy, weak-feeling legs: Homeopaths link the remedy to a feeling of heaviness and weakness in the legs after effort. Ongoing leg weakness has many real medical causes and needs a doctor, not self-treatment. Pins and needles in the arms or legs: Tradition mentions tingling and numbness along with the tiredness. New or spreading numbness can be a sign of nerve or spine trouble, so get it checked. Exam nerves and dread of mental effort: Some homeopaths choose it for a student who feels flat and cannot face more work. Any benefit here is hard to separate from rest, reassurance and the placebo effect. Boils and small skin sores (older traditional use): Older books list it for crops of small boils. This comes from the dye and dressing history of picric acid, not from any test of the diluted remedy. Spreading or painful skin infection needs medical care.

Common forms are: - Sugar pellets or globules - Soft tablets that dissolve in the mouth - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base

Common strengths sold to the public are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Higher numbers mean more dilution steps, not more chemical. Very low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X may still contain real picric acid and are best avoided.

Where it comes from:

Picric acid was made in a lab in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Acidum picricum?

  • Do not use raw picric acid (trinitrophenol) at home for any reason — it is toxic to swallow and can explode when dry.
  • Do not use strengths below 6C, such as 1X, 2X or 3X, unless a doctor has told you to, because these can still contain real picric acid, which can harm the kidneys and liver.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or liver disease and are considering any low-strength or raw form.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees, as safety has not been tested.
  • Do not use if you are treating a child under 2 years old without first speaking to a doctor.
  • Do not use if you have a serious illness such as cancer, an infection or heart disease and are thinking of using this in place of your prescribed treatment.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole (medicines that react badly with alcohol), or if you avoid alcohol.
  • Do not use if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar) and cannot find a lactose-free pellet.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your tiredness lasts more than two weeks, or if it comes with weight loss, fever, night sweats or low mood that will not lift. These can point to a cause that needs testing.

Get help the same day if you have a headache that starts suddenly and hurts badly, weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, or numbness that is spreading.

Go to an emergency department if anyone swallows raw picric acid or a very low-strength preparation by mistake. Take the container with you.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
