Acidum fluoricum

A long-standing staple of homeopathy, but no human trials exist for this remedy and homeopathy overall has not outperformed placebo.

What is Acidum fluoricum? Acidum fluoricum is a single homeopathic remedy made from hydrofluoric acid. Homeopaths give it for long-standing complaints of the hair, nails, teeth, bones and veins. It is sold as sugar pellets, tablets or liquid drops. The starting material is a corrosive acid (it burns skin and tissue on contact). Homeopathic makers dilute it in steps, shaking it hard between each step. At 30C, the dilution has been repeated so many times that essentially none of the original acid remains. What you actually swallow at 30C is the sugar or alcohol carrier. Very low potencies such as 3X or 6X are a different case, because a trace of fluoride may still be present. On the evidence: no human trials of Acidum fluoricum itself have been published, and large reviews of homeopathy trials in general have not separated the remedies from placebo (a dummy treatment). Its standing inside homeopathy is long and well documented. Traditional standing is not the same as proof that something works, and that is true everywhere in this document. This page describes what practitioners use it for and what the research does and does not show. It is not a recommendation to replace medical care for a diagnosed problem. How does Acidum fluoricum work? There is no accepted explanation for how Acidum fluoricum could work in the body at 30C, because no measurable amount of the original substance is left. Homeopathy explains its remedies through the "like cures like" idea: a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person is said to relieve similar symptoms when given in very high dilution. Practitioners also claim the repeated shaking leaves an imprint of the substance in the water or alcohol. Neither claim has been confirmed by laboratory measurement or by clinical trials. Any benefit people report may come from placebo response, from the long consultation, or from the problem easing on its own. In very low potencies (roughly 6X and below), small amounts of fluoride may remain, so fluoride's known effects on teeth and bone are worth keeping in mind. What forms does Acidum fluoricum come in? Common forms you will find: Small sugar pellets or globules, the usual form for home use. Soft tablets that dissolve under the tongue. Liquid dilutions in alcohol, taken as drops. Combination products where Acidum fluoricum is one of several remedies in the mix. Potencies are labelled X (or D), C and M. Homeopaths most often use 6C, 30C and 200C for this remedy, and reserve the highest potencies for their own prescribing. Where it comes from: Acidum fluoricum was introduced into homeopathy in the 1800s and its symptom picture was recorded in the standard nineteenth-century materia medica texts, including those of Hering and Allen. Homeopaths came to treat it as a deep-acting remedy for people who seem to age early: thinning hair, split nails, decaying teeth, swollen veins and bone complaints. A restless, warm-blooded person who feels worse in heat is part of the classic picture. It has remained a standard entry in homeopathic prescribing since then, but it is used within one tradition only and has no separate record in herbal medicine, Ayurveda or traditional Chinese medicine.

Helps

What does Acidum fluoricum help with? Hair loss and thinning hair: This is the best-known homeopathic use, especially for hair that falls out in patches after an illness. No clinical trial has tested Acidum fluoricum for hair loss. Sudden or patchy hair loss should be looked at by a doctor, since thyroid disease, iron deficiency and autoimmune conditions all cause it and all have treatments. Brittle, split or deformed nails: Homeopaths match this remedy to nails that grow fast but split, crumble or ridge. There is no trial evidence for this use. Nail changes can signal fungal infection, psoriasis or thyroid problems, which need a diagnosis first. Varicose veins (swollen, twisted veins): Traditional homeopathic texts list distended, aching leg veins that feel worse in warmth. No human study supports the remedy for this. Compression stockings, movement and, when needed, vein procedures are the treatments with actual evidence behind them. Dental caries (tooth decay): Older homeopathic sources link this remedy to rapid tooth decay and crumbling enamel. There is no trial evidence, and it cannot repair a decayed tooth. Decay needs a dentist; only a dentist can clean out and fill a cavity. Bone pain and bony lumps: Classical texts describe use for aching long bones and small bony growths. No human research has tested this. New or persistent bone pain, or a growing lump, must be assessed by a doctor. Slow-healing skin ulcers: Homeopaths have used it for old, hot, itching ulcers that refuse to close. No trial evidence exists. A non-healing ulcer, especially on the leg or foot, needs proper wound care and a check for diabetes or poor circulation. Goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck): It appears in homeopathic repertories under neck swelling. There is no clinical evidence for this use, and thyroid disease is diagnosed with a blood test and treated with medicines that work. Early ageing of skin and connective tissue: The classic picture is loose, dry, prematurely wrinkled skin in someone who feels hot. This is a traditional description, not a tested claim, and no study has measured any such effect.

Common forms you will find:

Small sugar pellets or globules, the usual form for home use.

Where it comes from:

Acidum fluoricum was introduced into homeopathy in the 1800s and its symptom picture was recorded in the standard nineteenth-century materia medica texts, including those of Hering and Allen.

Who should avoid Acidum fluoricum?

  • Do not use if you are offered undiluted or industrial hydrofluoric acid in any form — it is a severe corrosive poison (it burns skin and tissue) and must never be swallowed or touched.
  • Do not use if you have a serious or urgent problem such as a non-healing ulcer, a growing lump, heavy bleeding or a suspected infection — get medical care first.
  • Do not use if you plan to stop, skip or lower a prescribed medicine in order to take it.
  • Do not use if you are relying on it for tooth decay, thyroid disease, diabetes or cancer, as these need real treatment.
  • Do not use if you cannot tolerate lactose (milk sugar) unless the product is clearly lactose-free.
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or avoid alcohol for any reason, and the product is an alcohol-based liquid.
  • Do not use if you are giving liquid alcohol-based drops to a baby or young child.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without first checking with your doctor or midwife.
  • Do not use if you are giving low potencies such as 3X or 6X to a child who already takes fluoride supplements, because of the risk of fluorosis (mottled, damaged tooth enamel).
  • Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to any homeopathic pellet or its ingredients before.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if hair loss is sudden or patchy, if a skin ulcer has not healed in two weeks, or if you have bone pain that wakes you at night or a lump that is growing.

See a dentist for any tooth that is painful, sensitive or visibly decayed. A remedy cannot repair a cavity.

Get urgent help if you have a swelling in the neck that makes it hard to swallow or breathe, a hot red painful leg, or signs of an allergic reaction such as a rash, swollen lips or tongue, or trouble breathing.

Get emergency help at once if anyone swallows or spills industrial hydrofluoric acid. It causes deep burns and can cause hypocalcaemia (dangerously low calcium in the blood), which can be fatal. Call emergency services and poison control immediately.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
