What is Cistus canadensis? Cistus canadensis is a homeopathic remedy made from a small North American plant, Helianthemum canadense. The plant is also called rock rose or frostwort. It is a single drug remedy, which means it comes from one source, not a blend. Homeopaths have used it for swollen neck glands, sore throats and a deep feeling of cold. The remedy is serially diluted, which means the plant is watered down again and again in steps. At 30C almost none of the source plant is left, and in most cases none at all. Here is the short verdict. Trials do not show that it works better than a placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works; we say that here once, and not again in each section. How does Cistus canadensis work? There is no known way for this remedy to act in the body. At 30C there is no plant left to act on you. Any change people feel is best put down to the placebo effect, to time, and to feeling cared for. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is that a substance which causes symptoms in a well person can treat like symptoms in a sick person. The second is that shaking and watering down makes a remedy stronger. Neither idea fits what we know about the body or about chemistry. That does not make the tradition dishonest. It does mean you should not expect a drug-like effect. What forms does Cistus canadensis come in? The most common forms are small sugar pills and liquid drops. Drops are made with water and alcohol. Common strengths on the label are 6C, 30C and 200C. One form is different. The mother tincture (the plain plant extract, marked with the sign Ø) and low strengths such as 1X or 3X still hold real plant matter. Use those only with a trained practitioner. Where it comes from: Rock rose grows in dry, sandy soil in eastern North America. Folk healers used the leaf on skin sores and for swollen neck glands. A leaf tea was also taken for sore throats. Homeopaths took the plant up in the 1800s. It sits in the old remedy books as a small entry, not a leading one. Its use rests on those early case notes, not on trials.

Helps

What does Cistus canadensis help with? Swollen neck glands: This is the main use in the old homeopathic books. There are no trials in people that test it for this. A neck lump that is new, hard, or growing needs a doctor, not a remedy. Sore throat and mouth ulcers: Old case notes describe a raw, ulcerated throat. No human trial has tested the remedy for sore throat. Most sore throats settle on their own within a week. A strong feeling of cold: Homeopaths pick this remedy when a person feels icy cold in one spot, such as the throat or the belly. This picture comes from case notes made in the 1800s. No trial supports it. Goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck): The old books list this use, but thyroid disease needs blood tests and real treatment. Do not manage it with this remedy. There is no trial evidence here at all. Dry, scaly skin patches: Folk healers put the raw plant on the skin. That is the plant, not the diluted remedy. We found no human trials of either one for skin.

Where it comes from:

Rock rose grows in dry, sandy soil in eastern North America. Folk healers used the leaf on skin sores and for swollen neck glands. A leaf tea was also taken for sore throats.

Homeopaths took the plant up in the 1800s. It sits in the old remedy books as a small entry, not a leading one. Its use rests on those early case notes, not on trials.

Who should avoid Cistus canadensis?

  • Do not use this remedy in place of any drug your doctor has given you, and never stop a prescribed drug to try it.
  • Do not use it for a neck lump that is new, hard, growing or painless — see a doctor first.
  • Do not use it to manage a thyroid problem such as goitre (a swollen thyroid gland in the neck); that needs blood tests and real treatment.
  • Do not use it if you have a high fever, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a stiff neck — get medical care the same day.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, or if you take disulfiram (a drug used to treat alcohol use).
  • Never give the alcohol drops to a baby or a young child.
  • Do not use the mother tincture (Ø) or low strengths such as 1X or 3X if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, since these still hold real plant matter.
  • Do not use it if you have ever reacted badly to rock rose or frostwort.
  • Do not use it if you have a weak immune system, from cancer treatment or an organ transplant, without asking your doctor first.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a swollen gland lasts more than two weeks, keeps growing, or feels hard and fixed in place. Get care the same day for a fever over 38.5C, night sweats, weight loss you did not plan, or a sore throat so bad you cannot swallow your own spit. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, drooling, or swelling that closes the throat.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
