Calcarea iodata

Recognised in homeopathic texts since the 1800s (T1), but human trial evidence for it is absent; effects are not shown to beat placebo.

What is Calcarea iodata? Calcarea iodata is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from calcium iodide (Latin: Calcii iodidum), a salt of calcium and iodine. Homeopaths have long given it for large tonsils and adenoids, swollen neck glands, and a swollen thyroid gland. The remedy is made by diluting the salt again and again, with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, the dilution is so extreme that essentially none of the starting salt is left. Low strengths such as 3X or 6X are different, and can still hold a small amount of real iodine. Here is the short verdict. Trials in people do not show that homeopathic dilutions work better than placebo (a dummy pill). Long use inside a tradition is not proof that a remedy works, and this page reports both axes on their own. How does Calcarea iodata work? Homeopathy rests on the idea that a tiny dose can ease symptoms that a big dose would cause. Makers dilute and shake the remedy many times over. They say this leaves a kind of imprint in the water or the sugar pellet. There is no known way for that to act on the body. At 30C, no molecules of the starting salt remain. Any change you notice is most likely placebo, natural healing, or the passing of time. Low strengths work on a different footing. A 3X or 6X dose can still carry real iodine. Iodine does act on the thyroid, the gland in your neck that sets your body's pace. What forms does Calcarea iodata come in? You will most often find it as small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Tablets and liquid drops are also sold. Common strengths are 3X, 6X, 12C, 30C and 200C. The X and C numbers tell you how many times it was diluted. A higher number means a weaker dilution of the starting salt, not a stronger drug. Some products blend it with other remedies. This page covers the single remedy only. Where it comes from: Calcarea iodata entered homeopathic practice in the 1800s. Writers of that era listed it for children with large tonsils and adenoids, for swollen glands in the neck, and for a swollen thyroid. It appears in classic homeopathic materia medica texts, such as those of William Boericke. It has stayed a minor but named remedy in that one tradition ever since. It has no record of use in other healing traditions.

Helps

What does Calcarea iodata help with? Large tonsils and adenoids in children: This is the best known use in homeopathic books. Texts describe a pale, chilly child with big tonsils and a blocked nose. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Blocked breathing at night in a child needs a doctor's opinion, not self-care. Swollen lymph glands in the neck: Homeopaths have given it for hard, lumpy glands that stay swollen after an infection. There is no trial evidence. A neck lump that grows, feels hard, or lasts more than a few weeks must be checked by a doctor. Goitre (a swollen thyroid gland): Tradition links it to thyroid swelling, likely because iodine feeds the thyroid. No trial supports the diluted remedy here. Thyroid disease needs blood tests and proper treatment. Extra iodine from low strengths can also upset a thyroid that is already unwell. Lingering catarrh (thick mucus) of the nose and throat: Old texts describe thick, ropy mucus and a stuffy nose after colds. No human trial has looked at this remedy for mucus. Most post-cold congestion clears on its own within a few weeks. Repeated sore throats: Homeopaths have used it between attacks in people prone to throat infections. There is no trial evidence. A sore throat with high fever, trouble swallowing, or drooling needs urgent medical care, not a home remedy. Breast lumps: Some older homeopathic writing mentions it for hard breast lumps. There is no evidence for this at all. Any new breast lump needs a prompt medical check. Do not delay that for any remedy.

Where it comes from:

Calcarea iodata entered homeopathic practice in the 1800s. Writers of that era listed it for children with large tonsils and adenoids, for swollen glands in the neck, and for a swollen thyroid.

It appears in classic homeopathic materia medica texts, such as those of William Boericke. It has stayed a minor but named remedy in that one tradition ever since.

Who should avoid Calcarea iodata?

  • Do not use if you have a thyroid problem, such as an overactive or underactive thyroid, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to iodine.
  • Do not use low strengths such as 3X or 6X if you take amiodarone (a heart rhythm medicine) or lithium (a mood medicine).
  • Do not use if you are booked for a radioactive iodine scan or treatment, or a scan that uses iodine dye.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because extra iodine can affect the baby's thyroid.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child unless a doctor is guiding their care.
  • Do not use it in place of antibiotics, surgery or any treatment your doctor has advised.
  • Never use it to treat a new breast lump, a growing neck lump, or a child who struggles to breathe at night.
  • Do not use the pellets if you react badly to lactose (milk sugar), or check the label first.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor soon if a lump in your neck or breast is new, hard, or growing. Also book a visit if swollen glands last more than three weeks.

Get urgent care for a sore throat with high fever, drooling, or trouble swallowing. Do the same for a child who snores badly, stops breathing in sleep, or gasps at night.

Call your doctor if you feel your heart race, lose weight without trying, feel very hot or very cold, or feel worn out. These can be signs of a thyroid problem that needs testing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
