What is Calcarea picrata? Calcarea picrata is a homeopathic remedy for boils that keep coming back. It is made from calcium picrate, a salt of calcium and picric acid. Homeopaths use it most for a boil inside the ear canal. The remedy is made by watering down the salt again and again. Each step ends with a hard shake. At a common strength like 30C, almost none of the salt is left in the pill. Here is the honest verdict. No human trial shows that it works better than a dummy pill (placebo). It has a set place in homeopathic books. But long use is not proof that a thing works. That point holds for every part below, so we say it just once. How does Calcarea picrata work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on a boil. At usual strengths, nothing active is left in it. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. Mainstream science does not accept either one. The first idea: a substance that causes symptoms in a well person can treat the same symptoms in a sick one. The second idea: watering down with shaking makes a remedy act more strongly. So why do some people feel better? Most small boils heal on their own. Time and the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to) do the rest. What forms does Calcarea picrata come in? The usual forms are small sugar pellets or tablets. You let them melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in a base of water and alcohol are sold too. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. Low decimal strengths such as 3X or 6X exist. They are stocked less often. Some products are triturations. This means the salt was ground up with lactose (milk sugar). That matters if you cannot digest lactose. Where it comes from: Calcarea picrata came into homeopathic use in the late 1800s. By then, picric acid compounds were common in chemistry. Homeopathic writers listed it for boils that keep coming back. Above all, they used it for a boil in the ear canal. It is a small, minor remedy, not a staple of the materia medica (the core list of homeopathic remedies). It belongs to one tradition only: homeopathy. There is no record of it in herbal medicine, Ayurveda or Chinese medicine.

Helps

What does Calcarea picrata help with? Boils that keep coming back (recurring furuncles): This is the main use named in homeopathic texts. No clinical trial has tested Calcarea picrata for boils in people, so there is nothing to grade beyond tradition. Boils that keep returning usually have a cause worth finding, such as staph bacteria carried in the nose or undiagnosed diabetes (high blood sugar). Ask your doctor for that check rather than repeating a remedy. A boil in the ear canal: Old homeopathic writing singles out this remedy for the very sharp pain of a boil inside the ear canal. That is a traditional indication only; no human study supports it. Ear-canal boils can be intensely painful and can spread. If pain is severe, the outer ear is red and swollen, or you have a fever, see a doctor the same day. Styes on the eyelid: Homeopaths have used it for styes that keep returning on the eyelid edge. There is no trial evidence behind this use. Most styes settle on their own with warm compresses. Get medical advice if your vision changes, the whole lid swells, or it does not clear within about a week. Small skin abscesses and infected hair roots: Traditional homeopathic use extends to small pus-filled spots around hair roots. Again, this rests on prescriber reports, not on tested evidence. An abscess that is growing, hot and tender often needs draining or antibiotics. A homeopathic pill is not a substitute for that. A painful pus pocket beside a fingernail (whitlow): Some older sources mention this remedy for pus around the nail fold. No human research exists for it. See a doctor if the finger throbs badly, the swelling spreads up the finger, or you cannot bend it. Infections here can reach the tendon and need prompt treatment.

Where it comes from:

Calcarea picrata came into homeopathic use in the late 1800s.

Who should avoid Calcarea picrata?

  • Do not use if you have a boil with fever, red streaks spreading from it, or fast-growing swelling — that needs urgent medical care, not a homeopathic pill
  • Do not use if you are relying on it instead of an antibiotic, drainage or other treatment your doctor has advised
  • Do not use if you have a weakened immune system from cancer treatment, steroid tablets, transplant medicines or HIV, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you have diabetes (high blood sugar) and a skin infection, without having the infection checked first
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a qualified practitioner agrees — safety in pregnancy has not been studied
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the product is a lactose tablet or trituration
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, are in recovery from alcohol problems, or are giving it to a child — choose pellets, not alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you have been offered a crude or undiluted picric acid or picrate product — raw picric acid is toxic to the kidneys and liver and is not the same thing as this diluted remedy

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if a boil is very painful, the skin around it is hot and spreading, or you have a fever or feel shivery and unwell. Get urgent help if red streaks run from the boil, the swelling is on your face, or you feel confused, faint or very short of breath.

Also book an appointment if a boil has not started to improve in about a week, if boils keep coming back, or if you have diabetes (high blood sugar), a weak immune system or an ear-canal boil with hearing loss or discharge.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
