Calcarea carbonica

A two-hundred-year staple of homeopathy alone, but human trial evidence does not separate homeopathic remedies from placebo, and none tests this remedy

Home

What is Calcarea carbonica? Calcarea carbonica is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the soft white middle layer of the oyster shell. That layer is mostly calcium carbonate, which is chalk (carbonate of lime). Homeopaths give it most often to people they call chilly and tired. These people may sweat on the head. They may also be slow to bounce back after effort. Like all homeopathic remedies, it is made by diluting the starting material again and again. A small amount is mixed with liquid and shaken, then diluted once more, step after step. At 30C, the strength most often sold, almost none of the oyster shell is left. What you swallow is a sugar pellet that carries the diluted liquid. Here is the honest verdict on the evidence. Trials have not shown homeopathic remedies to work better than placebo (a dummy treatment). There is no good human trial of Calcarea carbonica on its own. It has been used in homeopathy for a long time, and that history is real. But long use is not proof that something works. This page makes that point here once, and does not repeat it in each section. How does Calcarea carbonica work? No one has shown how Calcarea carbonica could work. That is the plain state of the science. Homeopathy has its own theory, and it has two parts. The first is "like cures like". A substance that would cause certain symptoms in a well person is said to ease the same symptoms in a sick one. The second part is "potentisation". That is the claim that diluting and shaking a remedy over and over makes it stronger, not weaker. Neither idea fits what chemistry and physics show today. Past about 12C, it is very unlikely that even one molecule of the starting material is left. And no one has shown a way for plain water or a sugar pellet to carry a lasting signal from something that is no longer there. A simpler answer covers much of what people report: The placebo response. The natural ups and downs of long-running health problems. The long, careful interview a homeopath does before picking a remedy. Those effects are real experiences. But they do not show that the pill itself does anything. What forms does Calcarea carbonica come in? These are the forms you will see on a shelf or get from a homeopath: Sugar pellets or pillules, usually labelled 6C, 30C or 200C. Soft tablets that melt on the tongue. Liquid drops in a base of water and alcohol. Low-decimal forms such as 3X or 6X, which may hold real calcium carbonate. Combination products, where Calcarea carbonica is one of several remedies in one pill. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann brought in Calcarea carbonica in the early 1800s. He was the German doctor who started homeopathy. He wrote about the remedy in his work on long-term illness. It became one of the remedies homeopaths call polychrests. That word means a remedy used for many different complaints. It has stayed a staple of homeopathy in Europe, India and the Americas for about two hundred years. Its standing sits inside homeopathy alone. It is not a remedy shared by several older healing traditions.

Helps

What does Calcarea carbonica help with? Tiredness and low stamina: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to Calcarea carbonica: easily worn out by physical effort, chilly, and slow to bounce back. There is no controlled human trial testing this remedy for fatigue. Ongoing tiredness has many treatable causes, including low iron, thyroid problems and poor sleep, so it deserves a proper check rather than a self-chosen pill. Feeling cold easily: Traditional homeopathic texts describe a person who wants to be wrapped up and whose hands and feet stay cold. No human trial has tested the remedy against placebo for this. Persistent cold intolerance can point to an underactive thyroid (a gland in the neck that sets your body's pace) and is worth a blood test. Night sweats, especially on the head: Sweating on the head and neck during sleep is one of the best-known traditional indications for this remedy. The evidence for it is case reports and prescriber tradition only. New night sweats with weight loss, fever or lumps need medical assessment, not a remedy. Slow digestion, bloating and constipation: Homeopaths have long used Calcarea carbonica for sluggish bowels with bloating and a craving for eggs or indigestible things. No trial supports it. Simple measures with actual evidence behind them — more fibre, more fluid, more movement — come first. Recurrent colds in children: It is a traditional children's remedy in homeopathy, given to slow-growing, sweaty, chilly children who catch every cold. Trials of individualised homeopathy in childhood respiratory infections have not shown a reliable benefit over placebo. Never let a remedy delay care for a child with breathing trouble, high fever or dehydration. Anxiety and worry about health: The traditional picture includes fear of illness and of losing control, with worse worry at night. This is remedy tradition, not trial evidence. Talking therapies and, where needed, prescribed medicines have real evidence and should not be replaced. Aching joints and slow recovery after effort: Homeopaths use it for dull aching in the back and knees in people who tire quickly. No human trial has tested it for joint pain. Joint pain with swelling, redness or fever should be seen by a doctor.

A simpler answer covers much of what people report:

The placebo response.

The natural ups and downs of long-running health problems.

The long, careful interview a homeopath does before picking a remedy.

Those effects are real experiences. But they do not show that the pill itself does anything.

What forms does Calcarea carbonica come in?

These are the forms you will see on a shelf or get from a homeopath:

Sugar pellets or pillules, usually labelled 6C, 30C or 200C.

Soft tablets that melt on the tongue.

Liquid drops in a base of water and alcohol.

Low-decimal forms such as 3X or 6X, which may hold real calcium carbonate.

Combination products, where Calcarea carbonica is one of several remedies in one pill.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann brought in Calcarea carbonica in the early 1800s.

Who should avoid Calcarea carbonica?

  • Do not use it in place of emergency care: call emergency services for chest pain, trouble breathing, a seizure, severe bleeding, a stiff neck with fever, or a child who is floppy or will not wake.
  • Do not stop or reduce any prescribed medicine to take this remedy; talk to your doctor first.
  • Do not use it instead of seeing a doctor for a symptom that is new, worsening or unexplained.
  • Do not take low-dilution forms (3X, 6X or mother tincture) if you have hypercalcaemia (too much calcium in the blood), kidney stones made of calcium, or hyperparathyroidism (an overactive gland that raises blood calcium).
  • Do not take low-dilution forms within four hours of levothyroxine (thyroid tablets), iron tablets, or tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics.
  • Do not give any homeopathic remedy to a baby under 12 months without speaking to a doctor first.
  • Avoid liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, are pregnant, are giving it to a child, or take disulfiram or metronidazole.
  • Do not use lactose-based pellets if you have severe lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar); ask for a sucrose-based brand.
  • Do not use it to manage type 1 diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, cancer, a serious infection, or any condition that needs prescribed treatment.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms are new, are getting worse, or have not improved after about two weeks.

Book an appointment sooner if you have night sweats together with weight loss, fever or new lumps; tiredness that stops you doing normal daily things; constipation with bleeding or a change in your usual bowel pattern; or a child who is not growing as expected or keeps getting chest infections.

Get urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, a first seizure, confusion, or a child who is very drowsy, breathing fast or not drinking.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
