Asterias rubens

Recognised in homeopathic practice since the 1800s, but human trial evidence is insufficient and does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Asterias rubens? Asterias rubens is a homeopathic remedy made from the red starfish, a sea animal. In homeopathy it has been used mainly for breast pain and breast lumps. It has also been used for skin spots and for a tense, restless mood. The remedy is made by diluting the starfish over and over. Each step shakes the liquid and cuts the strength again. At 30C, which is the most common strength sold, no starfish is left in the pills at all. Human trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill (placebo). Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a thing works. A breast lump needs a doctor, not a home remedy. How does Asterias rubens work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body. Homeopaths work from an old idea called "like cures like". They say a tiny dose of something that causes symptoms can also ease those symptoms. They say that shaking and diluting leaves an imprint in the water. Chemistry does not support that idea. At 30C the starfish has been diluted so far that not one molecule (the smallest unit of a substance) is left. Any change people notice is most likely a placebo effect, which means the effect comes from belief and attention, not from the pill. What forms does Asterias rubens come in? Sugar pellets are the most common form. You may also find: - Small round pellets or tablets that melt under the tongue - Liquid drops, often in an alcohol base - Mother tincture, the strong first extract, sold mainly to practitioners - Common strengths on the label such as 6C, 30C and 200C The number and letter on the label tell you how far it was diluted. A higher number means more dilution, not more drug. Where it comes from: Asterias rubens entered homeopathy in the 1800s in France. The homeopath Petroz is credited with the first "proving", the test where healthy people take a substance and write down what they feel. Homeopathic books have listed it ever since, mostly for breast complaints and for skin spots in young people. It is a known remedy, but not one of the main ones.

Helps

What does Asterias rubens help with? Breast pain and swelling before a period: This is the best known use in homeopathy. Books describe sore, heavy breasts that hurt more in the days before a period. No human trial has tested Asterias rubens for this. Simple steps such as a supportive bra, pain relief and a doctor's check have real evidence behind them. Breast lumps (traditional use only — always get a lump checked): Homeopathic texts list this remedy for hard lumps in the breast. Do not act on that. A new lump can be harmless, but it can also be cancer, and only tests can tell. See a doctor first. There is no trial evidence that this remedy shrinks a lump of any kind. Acne and skin spots: Older books used it for spots on the face in teenagers, often alongside breast symptoms. There are no human trials for this use. Creams and tablets from a pharmacy or doctor have far better evidence. Tense, restless mood: The remedy picture describes a person who feels edgy, jumpy and unable to settle. This comes from provings, not from trials. If low mood or worry lasts more than a couple of weeks, talk to your doctor. Headache: Homeopathic texts mention a heavy, pressing headache linked with the same remedy picture. No trial has tested this. A new, severe or changing headache needs a doctor, not a home remedy.

You may also find: - Small round pellets or tablets that melt under the tongue - Liquid drops, often in an alcohol base - Mother tincture, the strong first extract, sold mainly to practitioners - Common strengths on the label such as 6C, 30C and 200C

The number and letter on the label tell you how far it was diluted. A higher number means more dilution, not more drug.

Where it comes from:

Asterias rubens entered homeopathy in the 1800s in France. The homeopath Petroz is credited with the first "proving", the test where healthy people take a substance and write down what they feel.

Homeopathic books have listed it ever since, mostly for breast complaints and for skin spots in young people. It is a known remedy, but not one of the main ones.

Who should avoid Asterias rubens?

  • Do not use this remedy in place of tests if you find a breast lump, notice fluid from a nipple, or see a dimple or change in the breast skin. Get checked straight away.
  • Never stop, delay or swap cancer care, such as surgery, chemotherapy (cancer drugs) or radiotherapy (cancer x-ray treatment), in order to use this remedy.
  • Do not use the mother tincture or very low strengths such as 1X to 3X if you react to seafood or other sea animals.
  • Do not use it if you have thyroid disease (a problem with the gland in your neck that sets your body's pace) without asking your doctor first, because low strengths may hold traces of iodine.
  • Do not use it while pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child unless a doctor has checked the child first.
  • Do not take the alcohol-based drops if you avoid alcohol for any reason.
  • Do not keep taking it if two weeks pass with no change, or if you feel worse.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within days if you find a new lump in a breast or armpit, if fluid leaks from a nipple, if the breast skin dimples or turns red, or if breast pain is only on one side and will not settle.

Go to urgent care the same day for a hot, swollen, painful breast with fever. That can be an infection.

Also see a doctor if spots or mood problems last more than a few weeks, or if any symptom gets worse while you use this remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
