What is Acidum chromicum? Acidum chromicum is a single remedy used in homeopathy. It is also called chromic acid. Homeopaths give it for thick, stringy mucus in the nose and throat. It is also used for a sore throat with a hoarse voice. Some homeopaths give it for nasal polyps (small soft growths inside the nose). Long use within a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. The remedy is made by diluting chromic acid over and over. At 30C, none of the starting acid is left. Trials do not show any effect beyond placebo (a dummy pill). How does Acidum chromicum work? Homeopathy rests on an idea called like cures like. The idea is that a substance which causes symptoms in a well person can treat those same symptoms in a tiny dose. Chromic acid burns the nose, throat and skin of people who work with it. Homeopaths chose it for complaints that look like that damage. This is a rule of thumb, not a proven action in the body. The liquid is shaken and diluted in steps. By 30C, the chance that even one molecule of the acid is left is close to zero. No one has shown a way for it to act, and trials do not tell it apart from placebo. What forms does Acidum chromicum come in? You will most often see small sugar pills soaked in the diluted liquid. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Common strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. The C means the liquid was diluted one part in a hundred, again and again. A 30C has been through that step thirty times. Raw chromic acid is a lab chemical and is never sold to the public as a remedy. Where it comes from: Chromic acid came into homeopathy in the 1800s. Homeopaths of that time gave substances to healthy people and wrote down what those people felt. Those notes, called provings, shaped how the remedy is used today. It has always been a small remedy. It sits in old prescribing books beside other acid remedies. No tradition outside homeopathy uses it.

Helps

What does Acidum chromicum help with? Thick, stringy mucus in the nose and throat: This is the classic picture in old homeopathy books. The mucus is said to be tough and hard to cough up. No human trial has tested the remedy for it, so this rests on tradition alone. Sore throat with a hoarse voice: Homeopaths pick it when the throat feels raw and the voice fades. There is no trial evidence to support this use. A sore throat with fever, or one that lasts over a week, needs a doctor. Postnasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat): Old texts describe mucus dripping down the throat at night. This use comes from provings, not from studies. Nothing has been published that tests it in people. Nasal polyps (small soft growths inside the nose): Some homeopaths list the remedy for polyps. No study shows that it shrinks them. Any growth in the nose should be looked at by a doctor, since some growths are serious. Morning hoarseness in singers and speakers: Traditional use covers a rough voice that eases as the day goes on. Again, there are no human trials. A hoarse voice that lasts more than three weeks needs to be checked.

Where it comes from:

Chromic acid came into homeopathy in the 1800s. Homeopaths of that time gave substances to healthy people and wrote down what those people felt. Those notes, called provings, shaped how the remedy is used today.

It has always been a small remedy. It sits in old prescribing books beside other acid remedies. No tradition outside homeopathy uses it.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Acidum chromicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Acidum chromicum?

  • Do not use it in place of antibiotics if a doctor has told you that you have a throat, chest or sinus infection.
  • Do not use it in place of tests or treatment for cancer, or for any growth in your nose, throat or lung.
  • Do not use low strengths such as 3X or 6X, which can still hold hexavalent chromium (a toxic form of the metal chromium).
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is fine.
  • Do not give it to a baby or a child under 12 without asking a doctor first.
  • Do not stop an inhaler, a nose spray or any prescribed medicine in order to try this remedy.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, and do not use the pills if you cannot have lactose (milk sugar).
  • Never handle, swallow or breathe in raw chromic acid; it is a corrosive poison that burns skin, eyes and lungs.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a sore throat, hoarse voice or blocked nose lasts more than a week. A voice that stays rough for three weeks or more always needs a check.

Get help the same day if you have a high fever, or if you cough up blood, or if one side of your neck swells.

Call emergency services right away if you cannot breathe or swallow, if you are drooling, or if anyone swallows, spills or breathes in raw chromic acid.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
