Teucrium marum verum

Recognised traditional use within homeopathy since the early 1800s, but human evidence is insufficient and does not separate it from placebo.

What is Teucrium marum verum? Teucrium marum verum is a homeopathic remedy made from cat thyme, a small Mediterranean shrub. Homeopaths use it mainly for long-standing nose trouble — polyps, a blocked or crusty nostril, constant dripping at the back of the throat — and for children who itch around the back passage because of threadworms. It is a single drug remedy, meaning it is made from one source plant rather than a blend. The plant is soaked in alcohol and then serially diluted, which means diluted over and over with hard shaking between each step. At 30C, the strength most often sold, essentially none of the original plant is left. Human trials do not show that it works better than placebo (a dummy treatment). Its standing comes from homeopathic tradition, and traditional use on its own is not proof that something works. How does Teucrium marum verum work? There is no accepted explanation of how this remedy could work in the body. Homeopathy holds that a substance which causes symptoms in a healthy person can ease similar symptoms in a sick person once it is diluted and shaken. Practitioners call this "like cures like" and say the water carries some imprint of the plant. Chemistry and physics do not support that idea, and no measurable plant material survives to 30C. Any benefit people notice is best explained by time passing, attention from a practitioner, and placebo effect. What forms does Teucrium marum verum come in? The usual forms are small sugar pills, called pillules, and liquid drops in an alcohol base. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The "C" means each step diluted one part in a hundred, repeated that many times, so 30C has been through thirty of those steps. Mother tincture (marked with the symbol Ø) and low X potencies are crude plant extracts, not high dilutions. They are a different product and need far more care. Where it comes from: Cat thyme has grown in Mediterranean gardens for centuries and was once sniffed as a powder for a stuffed-up nose. Samuel Hahnemann tested it on healthy volunteers and published what they reported in his Materia Medica Pura in the early 1800s. Homeopaths have used it since, mostly for nasal polyps and for children with worms. That gives it a clear, recognised place in the written record of one tradition.

Helps

What does Teucrium marum verum help with? Nasal polyps (soft growths inside the nose): This is the classic homeopathic use, based on old provings rather than trials. No study has shown that the remedy shrinks a polyp. Polyps need a proper look from a doctor, because a blockage on one side only can have other causes. Long-standing blocked or crusty nose: Homeopathic texts describe a nose that feels stopped up even when it seems clear, with dry crusts. Evidence for this use is limited to those traditional descriptions. If your nose has been blocked for weeks, get it checked. Post-nasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat): Traditional homeopathic prescribing includes this symptom picture. There are no controlled trials on it. Ordinary causes such as allergy or reflux are worth ruling out first. Itching around the anus (back passage): A well-known traditional indication, usually linked with worms in children. No trial has tested it. Itching that persists deserves a look from a doctor, since piles, eczema and infection all cause it. Threadworm symptoms in children: Homeopaths have long given this remedy for night-time itching thought to come from threadworms. It is not a worming medicine and should not replace one. Proven treatments from a pharmacy or doctor clear threadworms reliably; ask for those. Restlessness and fidgeting at night in children: The provings describe a child who cannot settle and keeps moving in bed. This is traditional description only, with no trial support. Poor sleep in a child has many causes worth discussing with a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Cat thyme has grown in Mediterranean gardens for centuries and was once sniffed as a powder for a stuffed-up nose.

Samuel Hahnemann tested it on healthy volunteers and published what they reported in his Materia Medica Pura in the early 1800s. Homeopaths have used it since, mostly for nasal polyps and for children with worms.

That gives it a clear, recognised place in the written record of one tradition.

Who should avoid Teucrium marum verum?

  • Do not use if you are thinking of it as a replacement for an antibiotic, an inhaler, a worming medicine or any other prescribed treatment — keep taking what your doctor gave you.
  • Do not use if you have a blockage or lump in one nostril only, repeated nosebleeds, or facial pain and numbness; see a doctor first, as these can point to something serious.
  • Do not use if you are offered a mother tincture (marked Ø) or a low potency such as 1X, 2X or 3X — these hold real plant material, and a close relative of this plant has caused serious liver injury.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease or drink heavily and are considering any crude Teucrium plant extract; the answer there is no, not a smaller dose.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife has told you it is fine.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under 2 years old without medical advice.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to cat thyme or to other plants in the mint family.
  • Do not use if you must avoid alcohol: for example you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or you are in recovery — unless you take the sugar pills rather than the liquid drops.
  • Do not use if you have lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) and the pills are lactose-based; ask for a sucrose version instead.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes that is hard to control and you would be taking many sugar pills each day.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your nose stays blocked for more than a few weeks, if only one side is blocked, or if you get nosebleeds, facial pain, numbness or changes in your sight or smell. Get help the same day for a high fever with severe facial pain or swelling around an eye. For a child, see a doctor if itching at night carries on after worming treatment, or if there is blood, weight loss or poor sleep night after night. Anyone who has taken a crude Teucrium extract and notices yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pain under the right ribs or unusual tiredness should get urgent medical help, as these can be signs of liver injury.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
