Corallium rubrum

Recognised in homeopathic writing since the 1800s, but no published human trials show it works better than a dummy treatment.

What is Corallium rubrum? Corallium rubrum is a homeopathic remedy made from red coral. It is a single remedy, made from one source, not a blend. Homeopaths reach for it most often for hard, dry coughing fits that come in fast bursts. The coral is ground up first. Then it is watered down again and again in steps. At 30C, almost none of the coral is left in the pill or the drops. So what you take is mostly sugar or water, and trials have not shown it beats a dummy pill. A long history of use is not proof that something works. That holds true for every claim on this page. People use it for short-term coughs and colds at home. It is not a treatment for a chest infection, asthma or whooping cough. If you or your child is truly unwell, you need a doctor, not a sugar pellet. How does Corallium rubrum work? The honest answer is that no one has shown a way for this remedy to work as a drug. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is 'like cures like': a substance that causes signs in a well person is said to treat those same signs in a sick one. The second is that shaking and watering a substance down makes it act more strongly. Both ideas clash with what we know about chemistry. At 30C the coral has been thinned out past the point where any of it can be left. There is no accepted way for plain water or sugar to carry an effect from it. People do often feel better after a dose. Time, rest, care and belief all play a part. Good trials are built to tell those things apart from the remedy itself, and so far they point to placebo (a dummy treatment). What forms does Corallium rubrum come in? You will most often see small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Other forms include liquid drops made with water and alcohol, a powder ground with lactose (milk sugar), and plain tablets. Strengths are written as 6C, 30C or 200C, or as 3X and 6X. The letters tell you how many times the coral was watered down and by how much. 30C is the strength most often sold in shops. Pick pellets if you avoid alcohol. Ask for a lactose-free form if milk sugar upsets you. Where it comes from: Red coral has been prized for hundreds of years. It was worn as a charm and ground up as medicine in Europe, India and the Middle East. Homeopathy took it up in the 1800s. Early homeopaths gave it to healthy people and wrote down what they felt. That is where the link with sharp, rapid coughing fits comes from. Old homeopathic books also listed it for sores tied to syphilis (an infection spread by sex). That use is out of date and unsafe. Syphilis needs antibiotics (medicines that kill bacteria) from a doctor. In Ayurveda, red coral is burned and worked into praval bhasma. That is a different medicine made a different way, and nothing here applies to it.

Helps

What does Corallium rubrum help with? Spasmodic cough (coughing that comes in sudden, fast bursts): This is the main use in homeopathic books. They describe a cough that fires off in quick, hard bursts and leaves you out of breath. We could find no human trials of this remedy for cough, so this rests on tradition alone. Cough that sounds like whooping cough, used only alongside medical care: Old texts list it here, but whooping cough (pertussis) is a serious lung infection. It needs antibiotics (medicines that kill bacteria) and a doctor's follow-up. Never use this remedy in place of that care, especially for a baby or young child. Dry, tickly cough that gets worse in cold air: Homeopaths pick it when cold air or a deep breath sets off the tickle. There is no trial evidence for this. A dry cough that lasts more than three weeks should be checked by a doctor. Post-nasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat): Traditional use only. Books describe thick mucus dripping back and setting off a cough. No human trials back this up. Hoarse voice and a raw, sore throat: Listed in homeopathic materia medica for a throat that feels raw after coughing fits. Evidence here is limited to those old write-ups. A hoarse voice lasting over three weeks needs a doctor, as it can have other causes. Head cold with a blocked, sore nose: A minor traditional use. Colds get better on their own in about a week either way, which makes any home remedy look helpful. No trials show this one speeds that up.

Where it comes from:

Red coral has been prized for hundreds of years.

Who should avoid Corallium rubrum?

  • Do not use if you or your child has a cough with whooping, gasping, vomiting after coughing, or blue lips — get medical help straight away
  • Do not use if you are short of breath, coughing up blood, or have chest pain
  • Do not use if you have been told you have whooping cough (pertussis, a serious lung infection) — that needs antibiotics (medicines that kill bacteria) and a doctor's follow-up
  • Do not use if you would be taking it in place of prescribed medicine for asthma, COPD (a long-term lung disease) or a chest infection
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year without a doctor's say-so, as small pellets are a choking risk and a baby's cough needs checking
  • Do not use if you cannot handle lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it — ask for a lactose-free form
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the only form on offer is alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol for health, recovery or religious reasons and only liquid drops are available — choose pellets
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and have not checked with your doctor or midwife first
  • Do not use if you are drawn to low, material strengths such as 3X without a practitioner, since sea coral can carry faint traces of heavy metals

When should you see a doctor?

Book a doctor's appointment if a cough lasts more than three weeks, if you keep getting fevers, if you are losing weight without trying, or if your voice stays hoarse.

Get help the same day if you have a high fever, you feel very unwell, or a child under two has a barking or whooping cough.

Call emergency services if lips or face turn blue or grey, if breathing is hard or very fast, if you cough up blood, or if someone stops breathing during a coughing fit.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
