Cimex lectularius

Recognised but minor use in one tradition; no human trials support it, and the evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Cimex lectularius? Cimex lectularius is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the common bedbug. Homeopaths have used it for chills, fevers that come and go, and joint pain. The remedy is made by diluting the bedbug over and over. Each step shakes the liquid hard. This is called a potency, and it is marked as 6C, 30C or 200C. At 30C, no bedbug is left in the dose at all. The dilution has gone far past the point where any source matter can remain. What you swallow is sugar, water or alcohol. Studies in people do not show that homeopathy works better than a dummy pill. Long use inside one tradition is not the same thing as proof. This page reports both facts side by side, and it will not repeat that point again. Think of this remedy as a folk item with a long paper trail and no proven effect. It is not a treatment for a bedbug bite, and it does not kill bedbugs. How does Cimex lectularius work? There is no known way this remedy could act on the body. That is the plain answer. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is 'like cures like': a thing that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease those same symptoms in a sick one. The second is that shaking and diluting make a remedy stronger, not weaker. Neither idea matches what we know about chemistry or the body. A dose must contain something to act on your cells. At 30C there is nothing left to act. Some people do feel better after taking it. That fits what we know about the placebo effect, plus the simple fact that many short illnesses pass on their own. Care, attention and time all help people feel better. What forms does Cimex lectularius come in? You will find this remedy in a few simple forms: - Small round pills or pellets that melt under the tongue. - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. - Loose granules in a tube. The strength is marked on the label: - Low potencies, such as 6C. - Higher potencies, such as 30C or 200C. - Mother tincture, the raw undiluted starting liquid, which is rare and sold mainly to practitioners. It is a single remedy, not a blend. Some combination products list it beside other homeopathic ingredients. Where it comes from: Cimex lectularius entered homeopathic use in the 1800s. It came from a proving, the method where healthy people take a substance and write down every symptom they feel. Old materia medica books list it for fever with chills that return in a pattern, and for joint pain that feels worse when you stretch a limb. It was a minor remedy even then, not a household name. It is still listed in homeopathic reference books today. That is a record of use, not a record of testing.

Helps

What does Cimex lectularius help with? Chills and fevers that come and go: This is the main traditional use. Old books describe a person who shakes with cold, then burns, then sweats, in a set pattern. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. A fever that returns in waves can mean malaria or another serious infection, so see a doctor. Joint pain that feels worse on stretching: Homeopathic texts point to pain in the limbs that gets worse when you straighten them. This comes from provings, not from trials. Nothing has been tested in people. Itchy skin and bite-type irritation: Some practitioners choose it for itchy, raised skin. There is no trial evidence. Note that this remedy does not treat real bedbug bites and does not clear bedbugs from a home. Restlessness at night: Old texts mention tossing and turning with the fever picture. No study has looked at this. Ongoing poor sleep is worth a real check-up.

You will find this remedy in a few simple forms:

- Small round pills or pellets that melt under the tongue. - Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. - Loose granules in a tube.

The strength is marked on the label:

- Low potencies, such as 6C. - Higher potencies, such as 30C or 200C. - Mother tincture, the raw undiluted starting liquid, which is rare and sold mainly to practitioners.

It is a single remedy, not a blend. Some combination products list it beside other homeopathic ingredients.

Where it comes from:

Cimex lectularius entered homeopathic use in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Cimex lectularius?

  • Do not use if you would be delaying or replacing a medicine your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use if you have a fever with a stiff neck, confusion, a rash that does not fade under pressure, or trouble breathing. Go to an emergency room.
  • Do not use if you have a fever that keeps coming back in waves, or you have travelled where malaria occurs, until a doctor has tested you.
  • Do not use if you are treating a bite or wound that is swelling, hot, red or leaking pus. That needs a doctor.
  • Do not use if you have a weak immune system from illness or from drugs such as steroids or chemotherapy, and you have a fever.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to insects or insect bites and the product is a mother tincture (the raw, undiluted starting liquid) or a low potency such as 6C.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar), unless the pills state they are lactose free.
  • Do not use if you are giving alcohol-based drops to a baby or young child. Use pellets instead.
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is an alcohol-based liquid.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without checking with your doctor or midwife first.
  • Do not use if you believe it will clear bedbugs from your home. It will not. That needs pest control.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a fever lasts more than three days, keeps coming back, or goes above 39C (102F). Get help the same day for a fever in a baby under three months, or in anyone with a weak immune system.

Go to an emergency room for a stiff neck, confusion, a rash that does not fade when you press a glass on it, chest pain or trouble breathing.

See a doctor if a joint is hot, red and swollen, if a bite is spreading or leaking pus, or if a rash covers a large part of your body. If you have been taking this remedy and nothing has changed in a few days, stop and get a real check-up.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
