Graphites

A long-standing staple of homeopathic practice (T2), but human trial evidence is insufficient and does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Graphites? Graphites is a homeopathic remedy made from native graphite, the soft grey-black carbon also called black lead or plumbago. It is a single drug (Homeopathy) and its Latin name is Graphites. Homeopaths reach for it mainly for long-standing skin complaints, above all dry, cracked eczema that weeps a sticky, honey-like fluid. The source mineral is ground up, then diluted and shaken over and over again. At the common 30C strength essentially no graphite remains, not even one molecule of the starting material. What you actually swallow is a sugar pellet, or a drop of alcohol and water. Long traditional use is not proof that something works, and the trial evidence does not separate Graphites from placebo (a dummy treatment). It has a deep record inside homeopathy and almost none outside it. Use it, if at all, alongside proper care and never instead of it. How does Graphites work? The honest answer is that there is no accepted way it could work, and no measured effect that needs explaining. The idea within homeopathy is "like cures like": a substance that could cause symptoms in a healthy person is said to ease similar symptoms once diluted. Homeopaths also teach that shaking the liquid at each dilution step leaves an "imprint" of the original substance behind. Chemistry and physics have not found any such imprint. This is a claim held inside the tradition, not a tested mechanism. Any benefit people report is best explained by other things. Skin complaints naturally flare and settle, expectation can genuinely change how you feel, and a homeopathic consultation is long and attentive. Those experiences are real, but they are not evidence that the pellets act on your skin. What forms does Graphites come in? Pellets, small sugar pills you let dissolve under the tongue, are the usual form. Liquid drops in alcohol and water are also sold, along with lactose powders and, less often, creams that list Graphites among their ingredients. Strengths are written as 6C, 30C or 200C, and sometimes 6X or 12X. The letter and number tell you how many times the material was diluted and by how much. Very low strengths such as 1X or 3X may still contain traces of real graphite; 30C does not. Where it comes from: Graphite was brought into homeopathy by Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded the system, in the early 1800s. He is said to have taken an interest after hearing that mirror workers rubbed graphite on their skin to heal sores. It then entered the classic homeopathic materia medica, the reference books that describe each remedy and the symptom picture it is matched to. Later writers such as Kent and Clarke kept it in regular use for skin and nail complaints. It is still a staple of homeopathic prescribing today. Outside homeopathy, graphite has no medicinal record at all. Its history is industrial: pencils, crucibles, foundry moulds and lubricants.

Helps

What does Graphites help with? Long-standing eczema with sticky, honey-like discharge: This is the classic Graphites picture in homeopathic texts: dry, thickened, cracked skin that oozes a clear, sticky fluid. No controlled human trial has tested Graphites for eczema. Eczema comes and goes on its own, which makes personal improvement easy to misread. Keep using the moisturisers or steroid creams your doctor prescribed. Cracked skin in folds, such as behind the ears or at the fingertips: Homeopaths match Graphites to deep, painful cracks in skin creases and at the ends of the fingers. This use comes entirely from the remedy pictures written in the 1800s. There is no trial evidence behind it. Deep cracks that bleed or become hot and red need medical attention, not pellets. Thickened, crumbly or misshapen toenails: Traditional homeopathic texts list thick, hard, deformed nails as a Graphites indication. No human study supports this. Thick crumbly nails are often a fungal infection, which has proven treatments that a doctor or pharmacist can arrange. Get the nail checked before spending months on anything else. Raised, thickened scars (keloids): Homeopathic prescribers have long used Graphites for old scars that stay hard, raised and itchy. We found no controlled trials of Graphites for scars. Keloids are stubborn, and the treatments with actual evidence, such as steroid injections or silicone dressings, come from a skin clinic. Constipation with large, hard stools: The traditional Graphites picture includes constipation with big, hard, knotted stools and no urge to go. No trial evidence supports this use. Fibre, fluids, movement and, if needed, a pharmacy laxative all have far better support. See a doctor if your bowel habit changes suddenly or you see blood. Slow-healing cracks at the anus (anal fissure): Homeopathic sources pair Graphites with sore, cracked skin around the anus that heals slowly. There is no human trial evidence for this. A fissure that bleeds or hurts badly should be looked at, because it can be treated and because bleeding has other causes that need ruling out.

Where it comes from:

Graphite was brought into homeopathy by Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded the system, in the early 1800s.

Who should avoid Graphites?

  • Do not use it in place of medicine your doctor has prescribed, including steroid creams, antibiotics, insulin or laxatives
  • Do not use it for skin that is hot, swollen, spreading or oozing yellow pus, which suggests infection needing antibiotics
  • Do not use it alone for a rash in a baby or young child without having a doctor look at the child first
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol, and never put alcohol-based drops on broken or bleeding skin
  • Do not use the pellets if you have galactosaemia (a rare inherited problem handling milk sugar) or severe lactose intolerance
  • Do not use low strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X, which can still contain traces of real graphite, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Never swallow industrial graphite, pencil lead or lubricant powder; the homeopathic remedy is not the same product
  • Do not delay care for new bleeding from the back passage or a sudden lasting change in your bowel habit

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a rash spreads quickly, turns hot and red, oozes yellow pus, or comes with a fever. Get help for skin cracks that bleed a lot or will not close, and for nails that keep thickening or crumbling.

Seek care for constipation lasting more than two weeks, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss. If you see no change after about a month on this remedy, stop and get your problem properly assessed.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
