Acidum sulphuricum

Recognised in homeopathic texts since the 1800s, but human trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Acidum sulphuricum? Acidum sulphuricum is a homeopathic remedy made from sulphuric acid. It is a single remedy, which means one substance, not a blend. Homeopaths have long given it for sour heartburn, shaky weakness in older people, easy bruising, mouth sores, and hot flushes with sweating. You can buy it as sugar pellets, tablets, or liquid drops. The label usually says 6C, 12C, or 30C. The acid is watered down again and again. One part acid is mixed with 99 parts water or alcohol, then shaken. That step is done over and over. At 30C it has been done 30 times. So almost none of the first acid is left in what you take. Here is the honest verdict up front. A long record of use inside homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. These are two separate things. Trials have not shown homeopathic medicines to work any better than placebo (a dummy treatment with no active ingredient). Use it if you wish, but use it alongside proper care for anything new, bad, or long-lasting. Do not use it instead of that care. How does Acidum sulphuricum work? No one can say how Acidum sulphuricum could work in the body. At the usual strengths, there is nothing left to measure and nothing left to act. Homeopathy rests on one idea. A substance that would cause certain symptoms in a well person is said to ease the same symptoms in a sick person, once it is watered down and shaken. Some also say the shaking leaves an "imprint" of the substance in the liquid. Neither idea has been shown to be true by ordinary physics, chemistry, or biology. What we can measure is the placebo effect. Many people also gain a lot from a long, careful talk with a practitioner. Those are real experiences, but they are not the same as the remedy acting like a drug. What forms does Acidum sulphuricum come in? You will most often find small sugar pellets, or pillules, that melt under the tongue. Tablets and liquid drops made with alcohol are sold too. Labels most often say 6C, 12C, or 30C. You may also see 6X or 30X. The higher the number, the more times the remedy was watered down, and the less of the first substance is left. Liquid drops usually hold alcohol. That matters for children, for people who avoid alcohol, and for anyone taking medicines that react with it. Where it comes from: Acidum sulphuricum joined the homeopathic materia medica (the books that list remedies and their symptom pictures) in the 1800s. That was the generation after Samuel Hahnemann started homeopathy in Germany. Writers such as Constantine Hering, and later William Boericke, wrote down its use. It was grouped with the "acid remedies". The themes in that group are exhaustion, sourness, and burning. It has stayed a known remedy, but a second-line one rather than a household name. Outside homeopathy, there is no herbal or folk habit of taking sulphuric acid. In industry it has always been a chemical, not a medicine.

Helps

What does Acidum sulphuricum help with? Heartburn with sour belching: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: burning in the stomach, sour rising and a craving for cold drinks. No human trial has tested Acidum sulphuricum for reflux or heartburn. Ordinary treatments, including antacids and acid-lowering drugs, have real trial evidence behind them; this does not. Weakness and trembling in older adults: Homeopathic texts describe an older person who feels exhausted, hurried and shaky inside. There is no trial evidence that the remedy changes strength, tremor or energy. Persistent weakness or a new tremor needs a medical assessment, since causes range from thyroid problems to nerve conditions. Easy bruising: Traditional use covers bruises that look dark and take a long time to fade. No published human trial supports this. Bruising that starts for no reason, spreads, or comes with bleeding gums or nosebleeds should be checked by a doctor promptly. Mouth ulcers and sore gums: The remedy picture includes small painful mouth sores and a sour taste. Evidence here is limited to the traditional record, not to trials. Most simple mouth ulcers settle within two weeks; one that does not should be looked at by a dentist or doctor. Hot flushes with sweating: Homeopaths have used it for flushes followed by sweating, often around menopause. Trials of individual homeopathic remedies for flushes have not shown a clear advantage over placebo. Hormonal and non-hormonal treatments with proper evidence are available and worth discussing. Indigestion linked to heavy alcohol use: Older texts link the remedy to people with long-standing alcohol use and morning stomach upset. There is no trial evidence for this use. Heavy drinking harms the liver, stomach and pancreas, and that needs real medical support rather than a remedy.

Where it comes from:

Acidum sulphuricum joined the homeopathic materia medica (the books that list remedies and their symptom pictures) in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Acidum sulphuricum?

  • Do not use if you have been given a mother tincture or a very low potency such as 1X, 2X or 3X without professional supervision, because those can still contain real sulphuric acid, which burns the mouth, throat and stomach.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of replacing a prescribed medicine with it, including medicines for reflux, ulcers, blood pressure or the heart.
  • Do not use if you have symptoms that need urgent care: chest pain, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, unexplained bruising or bleeding — as these need a doctor now, not a remedy.
  • Do not use if you have swallowed or been splashed with industrial sulphuric acid; call emergency services straight away, as this is a chemical burn and not something homeopathy treats.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife agrees, because low-potency and alcohol-based forms have not been tested in pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are giving alcohol-based drops to a baby or young child; ask a doctor first and use pellets if a remedy is used at all.
  • Do not use if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole (an antibiotic) and the product is alcohol-based, because alcohol reacts badly with both.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to lactose (milk sugar), sulphites or anything else listed on the pack.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within a few days if heartburn, mouth sores, weakness or bruising last more than about two weeks, keep coming back, or get worse while you are using the remedy.

Get urgent help the same day if you have chest pain, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, bruising that spreads for no reason, or unexplained weight loss.

Call emergency services immediately if someone has swallowed concentrated acid or has burning in the mouth and throat after taking a low-potency product.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
