What is Carboneum sulphuratum? Carboneum sulphuratum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from carbon disulphide, a strong-smelling liquid used in factories. Its Latin name is Carbonei disulphidum. Homeopaths use it as a single remedy. They give it for numb or burning hands and feet, weak legs, and dim sight. These match the signs seen in workers who breathed the raw chemical. The source is watered down again and again. At 30C, none of it is left. Trials do not show it beats a dummy pill (a placebo). So treat its long use in homeopathy as history, not proof. It is not a cure, and it must not replace care from your doctor. How does Carboneum sulphuratum work? Honest answer: there is no known way for it to work in the body. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is 'like cures like': a thing that causes signs in a well person is said to ease those same signs in a sick one. The second is that shaking at each step of watering down leaves some kind of imprint. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry. At 30C there is no source left to act on you. Any relief people feel is best put down to placebo, to time, and to being listened to. What forms does Carboneum sulphuratum come in? It comes as small sugar pellets, as tablets, or as drops. Common strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. The letter C means each step waters the last one down 100 times. A higher number means more watering down, not more power. Drops are usually mixed in alcohol. Pellets are usually made of lactose (milk sugar) or sucrose (table sugar). Ask for pellets if you avoid alcohol. Where it comes from: Carbon disulphide was first made in the 1790s. Factories used it widely through the 1800s. Homeopaths took it up in the mid-1800s. Its picture came from provings, where healthy people took it and wrote down what they felt. Reports from sick factory workers added to that picture. It has stayed a small, rarely used remedy. You can find it in old homeopathic texts such as Allen's Encyclopedia and later materia medica books (lists of remedies).

Helps

What does Carboneum sulphuratum help with? Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet: This is the main reason homeopaths reach for it. The idea came from workers who breathed carbon disulphide and lost feeling in their limbs. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. New or spreading numbness needs a doctor, not a pill from a shop. Burning or crawling feelings in the skin: Old homeopathic texts list burning soles and a crawling feeling under the skin. The support is a symptom list from the 1800s, not a study. Nothing has been measured in people. Weak legs and unsteady walking: Traditional homeopathic use only. Weak legs can come from nerve, spine or brain problems. Get this checked before you try anything for it. Dim or blurred sight: Old texts link this remedy to dim sight in heavy drinkers and smokers. There is no trial evidence at all. Sight loss can be urgent, so see an eye doctor first. Ringing in the ears: Listed in homeopathic materia medica (remedy lists) as a minor use. No human study has looked at it. Sudden ringing with hearing loss needs same-week medical care. Bloating and trapped wind: Homeopaths note loud rumbling and lots of wind in the remedy picture. This rests on provings, not trials. Simple diet changes have better support. Long-term effects of heavy drinking: Some old texts suggest it for people worn down by years of drinking. There is no evidence it helps, and it does nothing for alcohol dependence. Real treatment and support are what work here.

Where it comes from:

Carbon disulphide was first made in the 1790s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Carboneum sulphuratum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Carboneum sulphuratum?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant: the raw chemical harms unborn babies, and the remedy has not been tested in pregnancy
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Do not use if you are offered a strength below 6C, or a mother tincture (the raw starting liquid) — raw carbon disulphide is a poison and must never be swallowed, in any amount
  • Do not use if you have new, spreading or worsening numbness, weak legs, or trouble walking — see a doctor instead
  • Do not use if you have lost sight in one or both eyes, or if your sight is fading
  • Do not use if you have diabetes (high blood sugar) and numb or burning feet — this needs proper foot and nerve care
  • Do not use if you would put off, stop or cut down a treatment your doctor has given you
  • Do not use if you work with carbon disulphide, for example in viscose rayon making, and feel unwell — ask for a work health check instead
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a child with numbness, weakness or sight problems without a doctor seeing the child first
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it

When should you see a doctor?

Get urgent help if someone swallows the raw chemical or a strong liquid form, or if they become confused, drowsy, or have a fit. Call your emergency number.

See a doctor the same week if numbness or tingling is spreading, your legs feel weak, you stumble, your sight is dim or blurred, your chest hurts, or your mood or memory has changed.

See a doctor sooner rather than later if your symptoms have not settled in two weeks, or if you feel worse after starting this remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
