What is Thallium metallicum? Thallium metallicum is a single homeopathic remedy made from thallium (Latin: Thallium, symbol Tl), a soft grey metal. It is also sold simply as Thallium. Homeopaths give it most often for hair loss, and for pain or numbness in the hands and feet. The metal is crushed, then shaken and watered down again and again. This is called serial dilution. At 30C, a common strength, not one atom of the metal is left in the pill. What does the evidence show? No human trial has shown that this remedy beats a dummy pill. Its use rests on old homeopathic case notes, and long use is not proof that a thing works. How does Thallium metallicum work? Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like". A substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease the same symptoms in a sick person, once it is watered down far enough. Raw thallium poisons the nerves and makes hair fall out. So homeopaths picked the diluted metal for hair loss and for burning, aching feet. Makers also say that shaking at each step leaves an imprint of the metal in the water. Chemists have not found such an imprint. No known body process could pick one up. At 30C there is nothing left that could act on the body. Tests in people do not tell this remedy apart from a placebo (a dummy pill with nothing active in it). What forms does Thallium metallicum come in? You will see it sold as small sugar pills, tiny granules, or liquid drops in water and alcohol. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. There are also X strengths, such as 6X. A higher number means more dilution steps, not a bigger dose. Homeopathic pharmacies make it as a single remedy. It is not usually part of a blend or combination product. Where it comes from: Thallium was found in 1861 by the English chemist William Crookes. Poisoning cases soon showed a clear pattern: the hair fell out and the feet burned and ached. Homeopaths took that pattern and made a diluted remedy from the metal. It shows up in homeopathic remedy guides from around 1900, such as the one written by John Henry Clarke. It has stayed a small, rarely used remedy since then. Its standing sits inside homeopathy only. No other healing tradition uses it.

Helps

What does Thallium metallicum help with? Hair loss, including patchy or sudden hair loss: This is the use the remedy is best known for in homeopathy. The link comes from thallium poisoning, which makes hair fall out in clumps. No human trial has tested the diluted remedy for hair loss, so there is no evidence it regrows hair. Sudden hair loss can point to thyroid disease, iron shortage or other illness, so get it checked. Burning or shooting pain in the hands and feet: Homeopathic guides describe sharp, shooting or burning pains in the feet and legs. Again, this mirrors what real thallium poisoning does to nerves. There are no trials in people, and no proof the remedy eases nerve pain. Lasting nerve pain needs a proper diagnosis from a doctor. Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet: Traditional homeopathic use only, based on the poisoning picture. No published human study supports it. Numbness with weakness, or numbness that spreads, can be a sign of a serious nerve or spine problem and needs medical care. Muscle weakness and tiredness after an illness: Older homeopathic texts list weakness and exhaustion after fevers. This is case-note tradition, not trial evidence. Nothing has been tested in people. Night sweats: Listed in homeopathic remedy guides as part of the remedy picture. No human trials exist. Night sweats that keep coming back, with weight loss or fever, should be checked by a doctor. Trembling of the hands: Tremor appears in the traditional remedy picture because thallium harms nerves. There is no trial evidence that the diluted remedy helps tremor of any cause.

Where it comes from:

Thallium was found in 1861 by the English chemist William Crookes.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Thallium metallicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Thallium metallicum?

  • Do not use if you have sudden or patchy hair loss, numbness or new weakness that has not been checked by a doctor, as these can be signs of serious illness
  • Do not use if you are offered a strength below 12C or below 24X, as these may still contain traces of thallium, a toxic heavy metal
  • Do not use if you have been exposed to thallium, or think you have swallowed it — that is a medical emergency, so call emergency services now
  • Do not use if you would be delaying or replacing treatment your doctor has prescribed for cancer, thyroid disease, kidney disease or nerve damage
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your own doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you have a severe milk allergy or cannot handle lactose (milk sugar), since the pills usually contain it

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor, do not wait, if your hair falls out quickly or in patches, or if numbness, tingling or weakness spreads or gets worse. These can point to thyroid trouble, low iron, nerve damage or other illness that needs proper treatment.

Get help the same day for pain in the feet that stops you walking, trouble with balance, confusion, or vomiting with numbness.

Call emergency services if you think anyone has swallowed thallium metal or a low-strength product containing it. Thallium poisoning can cause nerve damage and can kill, and it needs hospital treatment fast.

Also speak to a doctor before you use this if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or thinking of giving it to a child.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
