Mercurius vivus

A long-standing staple of homeopathic prescribing, but human trials do not distinguish it from placebo.

Home

What is Mercurius vivus? Mercurius vivus is a homeopathic remedy made from metallic mercury. That shiny liquid metal is also called quicksilver. Its Latin name is Hydrargyrum (Hg). Homeopaths give it for sore throats and mouth ulcers. They also use it for heavy drooling, bad breath and night sweats. The mercury is diluted in stages. The liquid is shaken hard between each stage. At the common 30C strength, almost none of the mercury is left. So the pills are sugar with a trace of a very dilute liquid. Trials do not tell this remedy apart from placebo (a dummy treatment). It has been a staple of homeopathy since the early 1800s. But a long record of use is not proof that a remedy works. Tradition and proof are two different things. How does Mercurius vivus work? The honest answer is that there is no accepted way it could work. No effect beyond placebo has been measured. Homeopathy's own idea is "like cures like". A substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to treat those same symptoms once diluted. Mercury poisoning causes drooling, sore gums, mouth ulcers and sweating. That is why homeopaths pair this remedy with those same complaints. Homeopathy also claims that repeated dilution and shaking leaves an "imprint" of the substance in the liquid. Chemistry and physics give no support for that claim. At 30C the dilution is so extreme that no mercury molecule should be left. People do notice that they feel better at times. Placebo, natural recovery and the care of a long consultation explain that best. What forms does Mercurius vivus come in? It usually comes as small sugar pillules or granules. You let them melt under the tongue. Liquid dilutions in alcohol and water are sold too, as are pressed tablets. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. Some are labelled LM or Q in specialist practice. Low decimal strengths such as 3X or 6X also exist. Those low strengths can still hold real mercury. Always check the potency on the box before you buy. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann was the German doctor who founded homeopathy. He brought in mercury remedies in the early 1800s. Doctors of that era already gave patients mercury for syphilis and other illnesses. It often poisoned them. Homeopathy kept the name but diluted the metal away. The remedy has been a fixture of homeopathic prescribing ever since.

Helps

What does Mercurius vivus help with? Sore throat and tonsillitis: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: a raw throat, bad breath and drooling, worse at night. No human trial supports it for sore throat. A bacterial throat infection can need antibiotics, so get a painful throat with fever checked. Mouth ulcers and sore, bleeding gums: Homeopathic texts match it to spongy, bleeding gums and ulcers in the mouth. Evidence is limited to that traditional description; no trial has tested it for mouth ulcers. Ulcers lasting more than three weeks need a dentist or doctor. Heavy drooling and metallic taste: These are symptoms of real mercury poisoning, which is how the remedy entered homeopathic use. There is no trial evidence that the diluted form changes them. A persistent metallic taste has other causes worth checking. Earache: Homeopaths use it for earache with smelly discharge. Studies of homeopathy for childhood ear infections have not shown a clear benefit over placebo, and none tested this remedy alone. Ear pain with fever in a child should be seen by a doctor. Night sweats: Traditional prescribing links it to sweating that soaks the bed without relieving the symptoms. No human trial has tested this. Repeated night sweats can signal infection or other illness and deserve a medical check. Diarrhoea with straining: Homeopathic texts describe diarrhoea with urgent, painful straining and a feeling of never being finished. There is no trial evidence for this use. Diarrhoea with blood, or lasting more than a few days, needs medical care.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann was the German doctor who founded homeopathy. He brought in mercury remedies in the early 1800s.

Doctors of that era already gave patients mercury for syphilis and other illnesses. It often poisoned them.

Homeopathy kept the name but diluted the metal away. The remedy has been a fixture of homeopathic prescribing ever since.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius vivus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius vivus?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, because mercury can harm a developing baby
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, because mercury can pass into breast milk
  • Do not use if you would be giving it to a baby or child, unless a doctor has said it is safe
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (long-term damage to the organs that filter your blood)
  • Do not use if you have had a reaction or allergy to mercury or to mercury-containing products
  • Do not use if the label shows a low potency such as 3X, 6X or 6C, or shows no potency at all, because real mercury may still be present
  • Do not use if you are being treated for metal poisoning or having dental amalgam fillings removed
  • Do not use if you would be taking it instead of antibiotics or other treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have a high fever, a throat so sore you cannot swallow, or a spreading skin infection — these need medical care now

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a sore throat comes with a fever above 38C, swollen neck glands, or trouble swallowing or breathing. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, drooling with a stiff neck, or a rash that does not fade when you press a glass on it.

Book an appointment if a mouth ulcer lasts more than three weeks, if gums bleed regularly, or if night sweats keep coming back. Any earache with fever in a child should be checked.

Stop taking it and speak to a doctor straight away if you notice hand tremor, numbness or tingling, mood changes, a persistent metallic taste, or less urine than usual. These can be signs of mercury affecting the body.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
