What is Mercurius corrosivus? Mercurius corrosivus is a homeopathic remedy made from mercuric chloride, a mercury salt once called corrosive sublimate. Its Latin name is Hydrargyri bichloridum. It is a single remedy, not a blend. Homeopaths pick it for burning, stinging pain that comes with hard straining. The usual targets are the gut, the bladder and the eyes. The raw salt is a violent poison, so it is diluted again and again while the remedy is made. At the common 30C strength, none of the starting salt is left in the pill. Trials do not show that it beats a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. How does Mercurius corrosivus work? No one has shown a way this remedy could act in the body. Homeopathy rests on an old idea called "like cures like". A substance that causes signs in a well person is said to ease those same signs once it is heavily diluted. Each C step dilutes the salt 100 times, then shakes it hard. After 12 steps, the chance that even one atom of the salt is left is tiny. At 30C there is none at all. Homeopaths say the water or sugar holds a "memory" of the salt. Chemists and physicists have found no sign of this. Any benefit people feel is most likely down to time, rest, care and the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Mercurius corrosivus come in? You will most often see small sugar pellets or tablets. They are sucked or let melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Labels give a strength such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more it has been diluted. Mother tincture and very low strengths hold real mercuric chloride and should never be taken. Where it comes from: Mercuric chloride has been known since the Middle Ages as corrosive sublimate. It was used to clean wounds and to treat syphilis. It also poisoned and killed many people, and it was once a common suicide poison. Homeopaths tested tiny doses of it in the 1800s and wrote down the signs it caused. It then became a standard entry in homeopathic books for gut, bladder and eye complaints. It has stayed in use in that one tradition ever since.

Helps

What does Mercurius corrosivus help with? Diarrhoea with cramps and constant straining (dysentery-type): This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: stools with blood or mucus, plus a feeling that you must go again right away. That picture comes from old case notes, not from trials. No human trial supports it. Bloody diarrhoea can be a serious infection. See a doctor rather than treating it at home. Burning pain when passing urine: Homeopaths use it when urine burns, comes in small amounts, and the urge never stops. Again, this comes from tradition alone. No trial has tested it for bladder infection. Most bladder infections need proper testing and often antibiotics. Delay can let the infection reach your kidneys. Sore, bleeding gums and mouth ulcers: Old texts list burning mouth pain, sore gums and a metal taste. This mirrors the signs that raw mercury poisoning causes. There is no trial evidence that the diluted remedy helps. A mouth sore that lasts more than three weeks needs a dentist or doctor. Sore throat with burning pain: Traditional use covers a raw, burning throat that hurts more when you swallow. No controlled study has tested the remedy for this. Most sore throats settle on their own in about a week. Get help if you cannot swallow, cannot breathe easily, or drool. Red, painful eyes with tears that sting: Homeopathic books name it for iritis (swelling inside the eye) and for burning, watering eyes. This use is traditional only, and no trial backs it. Eye pain with blurred sight or light that hurts needs same-day medical care. Sight can be lost fast.

Where it comes from:

Mercuric chloride has been known since the Middle Ages as corrosive sublimate.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius corrosivus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius corrosivus?

  • Do not use if you have a product labelled below 12C or 24X, or a mother tincture — these can hold real mercuric chloride, a deadly poison, and must never be swallowed
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is fine
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (kidneys that no longer filter waste well)
  • Do not use if you are being treated for metal poisoning or are taking chelation drugs (medicines that pull metals out of the body)
  • Do not use if you would stop, skip or delay a medicine your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have bloody diarrhoea, a high fever, severe belly pain, or you cannot pass urine — get medical care instead
  • Do not use if you have eye pain, blurred sight or light that hurts your eyes — see a doctor the same day
  • Do not use if you cannot take lactose (milk sugar), unless the pellets are lactose free

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within a day if your symptoms are no better after two or three days, or if they get worse at any point.

Get care the same day for blood in your stools or urine, a fever above 38C, severe belly pain, eye pain or sudden changes in your sight.

Go to an emergency department, or call your local emergency number, if you or a child swallows a low-strength or undiluted mercury product. Warning signs are a metal taste, burning in the mouth and throat, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, and passing very little urine. Take the pack with you.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
