Doryphora decemlineata

Recognised but minor within homeopathy only; no human trials exist, and homeopathic remedies overall do not beat placebo.

What is Doryphora decemlineata? Doryphora decemlineata is a homeopathic remedy made from the Colorado potato beetle. Its Latin name is Leptinotarsa decemlineata. Homeopathy books link it to burning, painful urination. It is given as a single drug, on its own, not as part of a blend. The beetle is diluted again and again in a set way. At 30C, the usual strength, none of the beetle is left — only the sugar pill, or the water and alcohol in drops. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill. Its place rests on tradition alone, not on proof. Long use is not proof that a thing works, here or for any remedy on this page. How does Doryphora decemlineata work? No one has shown how it could work, and no mechanism is accepted outside homeopathy. Homeopathy rests on an idea called 'like cures like'. A substance that causes signs in a well person is meant to ease the same signs in a sick one. Handling these beetles was said to irritate skin and the urine tract, so the beetle was chosen for urinary complaints. The beetle is then diluted far past the point where any of it is left. A 30C pill has been diluted 30 times over, one drop in a hundred each time. Lab tests find nothing of the source in it. Some say the water keeps a 'memory' of what was once in it. There is no accepted proof of that idea. When trials compare these pills with dummy pills, the two come out the same. What forms does Doryphora decemlineata come in? You will most often see small sugar pills or granules that melt under the tongue. Liquid dilutions in water and alcohol are also sold, taken as drops. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The higher the number, the more times it has been diluted, and the less of the source is left. A 30C pill is the usual retail choice. Mother tinctures and very low strengths such as 1X to 3X are not general retail items for this beetle. Where it comes from: The Colorado potato beetle spread fast across North America in the middle of the 1800s as potato farming grew. American homeopaths of that era tested many local plants, animals and insects. Doryphora decemlineata entered homeopathic reference books in the late 1800s. Writers of the time described stinging, burning urination and a constant urge to pass water. It has always been a small remedy. It is used far less than staples such as Cantharis, and it belongs to one tradition only.

Helps

What does Doryphora decemlineata help with? Burning pain when passing urine: This is the main traditional use. Homeopathy books describe a raw, scalding feeling during and just after passing water. No human trial has tested the remedy for this, so there is no evidence it helps beyond a dummy pill. A constant urge to pass urine with little coming out: Old homeopathic texts call this strangury and list Doryphora for it. Again, this comes from provings and case notes, not from trials. Burning with a strong urge can mean a urine infection, which needs a doctor. Bladder irritation after a urine infection has been treated: Some homeopaths use it when soreness lingers after antibiotics have finished. There is no trial support for this. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed. Discomfort low in the belly linked to the bladder: Traditional texts mention aching above the pubic bone with the urinary picture. Evidence is limited to those old written accounts. Pain low in the belly with fever or back pain needs checking. Skin itching and stinging (older traditional use): A few early writers noted itching and stinging skin after handling the beetle, and used the remedy for similar skin feelings. This use is rare today. There is no laboratory or human study behind it.

Where it comes from:

The Colorado potato beetle spread fast across North America in the middle of the 1800s as potato farming grew.

Who should avoid Doryphora decemlineata?

  • Do not use this instead of antibiotics if a doctor has told you that you have a urine infection.
  • Never use the mother tincture or any strength weaker than 4C, as these can still contain real beetle matter.
  • Do not use it to treat a child under 2 without speaking to a doctor first.
  • Never give the alcohol-based liquid drops to a baby or young child; use the pills if a remedy is used at all.
  • Do not use the liquid drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or if you are avoiding all alcohol.
  • Do not use the pills if you have a known allergy to lactose (milk sugar) or to cane sugar.
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or midwife says it is fine.
  • Do not use it to treat blood in your urine, fever with back pain, or an inability to pass urine — these need a doctor the same day.
  • Do not use it alongside a chronic kidney or bladder condition without telling the doctor who treats you.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you have a fever, chills, pain in your side or lower back, blood in your urine, or vomiting along with urinary pain. Go to an emergency department if you cannot pass urine at all, or if you get swelling of the lips, face or throat, a spreading rash, or trouble breathing after taking any product. Also see a doctor if burning or urgency has not settled within 3 days, if it keeps coming back, or if you are pregnant, have diabetes, or have a known kidney problem.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
