Vespa crabro

Recognised but minor in one tradition since the 1800s; no human trials support it over placebo.

What is Vespa crabro? Vespa crabro is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the European hornet — the whole insect and its venom. Homeopaths give it for skin that is red, hot, puffy and stinging. The remedy is made by watering the hornet stock down again and again. Each step is shaken hard. At a strength of 30C, no hornet is left. What you swallow is a sugar pill, or water and alcohol. Trials have not shown that it beats a dummy pill. Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. That point is made here once, and not repeated below. How does Vespa crabro work? There is no known way this remedy could act in the body. At 30C it holds no hornet at all. Homeopathy rests on an old idea called "like cures like". A real hornet sting makes skin burn, swell and turn red. So homeopaths give hornet, watered far down, for those same signs. They also say the shaking leaves an "imprint" in the water. Lab tests have never found one. Simple chemistry says nothing of the hornet remains. What forms does Vespa crabro come in? Most people buy small sugar pills that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Strengths are printed as 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more watering down. Mother tincture is the raw, undiluted stock and is rarely sold to the public. Where it comes from: Vespa crabro was added to homeopathy in the 1800s. Healthy people took it and wrote down what they felt. Those notes are called provings. It has stayed a small, minor remedy in that one system. Hornets have no other place in folk or herbal medicine as a treatment.

Helps

What does Vespa crabro help with? Hives (nettle rash): This is the classic use. Homeopaths pick it when welts burn and sting, and cool water helps. No trial has tested it for hives. Most hives fade on their own in a day or two. Insect stings and bites: Homeopaths use it for a sting that stays red, hot and puffy. Ice, antihistamines and, when needed, an adrenaline pen are the proven steps. Do not swap those for this remedy. Red, swollen, burning skin: Old texts mention skin that looks like erysipelas — a spreading red skin infection. That needs antibiotics from a doctor. This remedy has not been tested for it. Hot, swollen joints: Some homeopaths use it for a joint that is hot, red and very sore. There is no trial evidence. A hot, swollen joint with fever can be an infection and needs same-day care. Sore throat with burning pain: Listed in homeopathic texts for a raw, burning throat. No human study supports this. A sore throat with high fever or trouble swallowing needs a doctor. Ovary pain, most often on the left side: Homeopathic books give this as a keynote for the remedy. It rests on 1800s provings, not on trials. New or bad pelvic pain must be checked by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Vespa crabro was added to homeopathy in the 1800s. Healthy people took it and wrote down what they felt. Those notes are called provings.

It has stayed a small, minor remedy in that one system. Hornets have no other place in folk or herbal medicine as a treatment.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Vespa crabro need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Vespa crabro?

  • Do not use if you have ever had a severe whole-body allergic reaction to a wasp, bee or hornet sting — never take low strengths or mother tincture of this remedy.
  • Do not use if you are having a bad allergic reaction right now, with swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing. Call emergency services instead.
  • Do not use if you are relying on it in place of an adrenaline pen (an emergency allergy injection).
  • Do not use if you have been stung and are getting worse: see a doctor the same day.
  • Do not use if you have a spreading red skin infection with fever. That needs antibiotics from a doctor.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is fine.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not use if you must avoid alcohol: the drops contain it. Ask for the sugar pills.
  • Do not use if you have a rare sugar problem such as galactose intolerance (your body cannot handle a sugar found in milk), without checking the pill base first.

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help if the face, lips, tongue or throat swell, if breathing is hard, or if you feel faint after a sting. Those are signs of a severe allergic reaction.

See a doctor within a day if a red patch of skin spreads, feels hot, or comes with fever. Do the same for a hot, swollen joint or a bad sore throat.

See a doctor if hives keep coming back for more than six weeks, or if new pelvic pain does not settle. Stop the remedy and get checked if you feel worse while taking it.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
