Medusa

Recognised but minor within homeopathy alone; no human trials exist, and homeopathy overall has not beaten placebo.

Home

What is Medusa? Medusa is a homeopathic remedy made from the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). Homeopaths give it mostly for sudden hives, itching and puffy swelling. The swelling is usually of the eyelids, lips or face. It is a small, rarely used remedy, not a well-known one. Like all single homeopathic remedies, it is made by diluting and shaking the source over and over. At the common strength of 30C, the pill you take holds in effect none of the jellyfish. Here is the honest verdict on the evidence. No human trials have tested Medusa for any health problem. Trials of homeopathy as a whole show it works no better than placebo (a dummy treatment). A long record of use inside homeopathy is not proof that something works. That point holds for everything on this page. How does Medusa work? Homeopathy is built on two ideas. The first is that like cures like. A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person is given for those same symptoms in a sick one. The second idea is that more dilution makes a remedy act more strongly, not more weakly. Jellyfish stings cause hives, burning and swelling. Homeopathic writers matched Medusa to those same symptoms. That is the reason for its use, not a tested mechanism. No accepted science explains how a remedy with no measurable source material could act on the body. Reported improvement has simpler explanations. Hives fade on their own, and people often use other treatments at the same time. Placebo response also plays a part. What forms does Medusa come in? Medusa is sold in the usual homeopathic forms. Sugar pills, pellets or tablets soaked with the dilution. Liquid dilutions in water and alcohol, taken as drops. Now and then a mother tincture or low X potency. This form is the most likely to hold traces of jellyfish protein. Common strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. A higher number means more dilution, not more material. Where it comes from: Medusa entered homeopathic reference books in the 1800s. It rests on a small proving, and on what jellyfish stings do to people. John Henry Clarke's Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica lists it for nettle-rash and swollen eyelids and lips. It has stayed a minor remedy ever since. It turns up in reference books far more often than in real prescribing. It has no use outside homeopathy. It has no place in herbal medicine, Ayurveda or Chinese medicine.

Helps

What does Medusa help with? Hives (urticaria, an itchy raised rash): This is the main traditional use for Medusa. Homeopathic texts describe it for a rash that flares suddenly, burns and itches, and moves around the body. No clinical trial has tested Medusa for hives. Most hives settle on their own within days, which makes any single person's improvement hard to read as proof. Swelling of the eyelids, lips or face: Old homeopathic sources single out puffy eyelids and swollen lips as the picture that calls for Medusa. There is no trial evidence behind this. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat can be the start of a serious allergic reaction. Treat that as an emergency, not as something to manage with a homeopathic remedy. Itching and burning skin after sea bathing: Because the remedy is made from a jellyfish, practitioners have used it for stinging, burning skin after time in the sea. This is symbolic matching, not tested treatment. An actual jellyfish sting needs first aid and, if severe, medical care. Nettle-type rashes that come and go: Homeopathic repertories list Medusa among many remedies for recurring nettle-rash. It is not a first-choice remedy even within homeopathy. Rashes that keep coming back for more than six weeks should be looked at by a doctor to find the cause.

Where it comes from:

Medusa entered homeopathic reference books in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Medusa?

  • Do not use any low-potency Medusa, such as 1X to 6X, or the mother tincture, if you are allergic to jellyfish, shellfish or seafood — these forms may still contain traces of jellyfish protein
  • Never use Medusa instead of an adrenaline auto-injector (an emergency allergy pen) if you have one prescribed
  • Do not use it to treat swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or any trouble breathing — that is an emergency
  • Do not use it in place of a medicine your doctor has prescribed, and do not stop that medicine to try it
  • Avoid it if you have lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) and the pills are lactose-based — ask for a sucrose version
  • Do not give it to a baby or child with an unexplained rash, fever or floppiness instead of seeing a doctor
  • Avoid the liquid drops if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, in recovery from alcohol problems, or giving it to a child, because they are usually preserved in alcohol

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if your lips, tongue or throat swell, if your voice changes, if you feel faint, or if you have any trouble breathing. These are signs of a severe allergic reaction.

See a doctor the same day if a rash spreads quickly, comes with fever, blisters or peeling skin, or if you feel generally unwell with it.

Book a routine appointment if hives keep coming back for more than six weeks, or if a rash has not settled after a few days. Recurring hives have causes worth finding.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
