Mercurius cyanatus

Recognised traditional use within homeopathy alone; no human trial evidence supports it, and high dilutions contain no source material.

What is Mercurius cyanatus? Mercurius cyanatus is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from mercuric cyanide, a very poisonous mercury salt. Its Latin name is Hydrargyri cyanidum. Homeopaths have used it for sudden, severe sore throats. The old case notes describe a grey or dirty film in the throat, great weakness, and a foul smell. That picture matches diphtheria, a dangerous throat infection. The remedy is made by diluting the poison again and again, with shaking at each step. At 30C there is essentially none of the starting material left. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill (placebo), so long use in homeopathy is not proof that it works. This page tells you what tradition claims and what the evidence shows. A severe sore throat with fever or trouble breathing is a medical emergency. It needs a doctor, not a remedy. How does Mercurius cyanatus work? There is no accepted way for this remedy to act in the body, because at common strengths there is nothing of the source left to act. Homeopathy works on its own idea, called "like cures like". Raw mercuric cyanide burns and ulcers the mouth and throat. So homeopaths give it, in tiny dilutions, for illness that looks the same. Homeopaths also say the water and alcohol keep a "memory" of the poison after shaking. Chemistry and physics give no support for this idea. No test has shown a difference between a 30C pill and a plain sugar pill. Any benefit people notice is best explained by placebo effect, by careful listening from the practitioner, and by the fact that many mild throat infections settle on their own. What forms does Mercurius cyanatus come in? It comes as tiny sugar pellets, larger round pills, or liquid drops in alcohol. Strengths sold most often are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. The C scale means one part in a hundred, repeated. The X scale means one part in ten, repeated. So 30C is far more dilute than 6X. Low strengths such as 3X or 6X may still hold traces of the raw poison. Stick to high dilutions and buy from a known, licensed maker. Never handle or take raw mercuric cyanide in any form. Where it comes from: Mercuric cyanide came into homeopathy in the 1800s. Homeopaths took small doses, wrote down what they felt, and built a symptom picture from it. It became known as a throat remedy in the years before antibiotics and the diphtheria vaccine. Old case books praise it for ulcerated, foul-smelling throats. It still appears in homeopathic reference books today. Its standing rests on those old notes and on practice habit, not on modern testing.

Helps

What does Mercurius cyanatus help with? Severe sore throat with a grey or dirty coating (the classic diphtheria picture): This is the use homeopathic books are built around. They describe a throat that ulcers fast, smells foul, and leaves the person very weak. No human trial has tested this remedy for it. Diphtheria and severe bacterial throat infection are treated with antibiotics, antitoxin and hospital care. Delay can block the airway or damage the heart. If you see a grey film in the throat, high fever, drooling or noisy breathing, get emergency help at once. Tonsillitis with ulcers and bad breath: Tradition suggests it for tonsils that look raw or ulcered, with a bad taste and smell. There is no trial evidence for this use. Most sore throats are viral and settle within a week. Some are bacterial and need antibiotics. See a doctor if you have a fever over 38.5C, if swallowing is very hard, or if the pain lasts more than a week. Mouth ulcers and sore, bleeding gums: Homeopaths have used it for a raw, burning mouth with easy bleeding of the gums. Evidence here is limited to old case reports. No controlled human study supports it. Mouth sores that last more than three weeks should always be checked by a dentist or doctor. Sore throat during scarlet fever type rashes: Old homeopathic texts list it for throat pain with a red rash and high fever. This rash pattern usually points to a bacterial infection that responds to antibiotics. No trial supports using this remedy instead. A rash with fever in a child needs a same-day medical opinion. Deep exhaustion during a throat infection: The remedy picture includes sudden collapse of strength, out of step with how the throat looks. There is no research support for treating this with the remedy. Marked weakness during infection can be a warning sign of sepsis (blood poisoning). If someone is floppy, confused, cold or hard to wake, call emergency services.

Where it comes from:

Mercuric cyanide came into homeopathy in the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Mercurius cyanatus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Mercurius cyanatus?

  • Do not use if you or your child has a grey coating in the throat, drooling, a muffled voice or trouble breathing — call emergency services now, as this can block the airway
  • Do not use if you are treating a throat infection your doctor has diagnosed, in place of the antibiotics or antitoxin you were prescribed
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (poor kidney function), because mercury can harm the kidneys and low dilutions may hold traces
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a doctor who knows your history agrees
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy or reaction to mercury, or have been told to avoid mercury for any reason
  • Do not use if you are being treated for heavy-metal poisoning, including chelation treatment (medicine that pulls metals out of the body)
  • Do not use if you have been offered a low strength such as 3X or 6X, or a product from an unlicensed maker, as these can still hold traces of the raw poison
  • Do not use if you have a weakened immune system (your body fights infection poorly), such as during cancer treatment, without medical advice

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help straight away if there is trouble breathing, noisy or squeaky breathing, drooling, a swollen neck, a grey film in the throat, or if the person is floppy, confused or hard to wake.

See a doctor the same day for a fever above 38.5C, a rash with a sore throat, pain that makes swallowing impossible, or a sore throat in someone with a weak immune system.

See a doctor soon if a sore throat lasts more than a week, if a mouth ulcer lasts more than three weeks, or if symptoms return again and again.

If you have swallowed raw mercuric cyanide, or think a child has, treat it as poisoning and call emergency services at once.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
