What is Carbo animalis? Carbo animalis is a homeopathic remedy. It starts as charcoal made by burning ox hide or bone, which is then ground up and diluted over and over. Homeopaths have long reached for it for hard, swollen glands and for older people who feel cold, weak and worn out. It is a single remedy, not a blend. The Latin name means charcoal from ox hide or bone. You may also see it sold as animal charcoal. The remedy is made by serial dilution (diluting the same mix again and again, shaking it at each step). At 30C, the strength most often sold, none of the starting charcoal is left. Here is the plain verdict. Trials of homeopathy do not separate these remedies from placebo (a dummy pill with no active drug in it). Carbo animalis has a real place in homeopathic tradition, but long use is not proof that something works. How does Carbo animalis work? No one has shown a way this remedy could act on the body, and that is the honest starting point. Homeopaths work from an idea called "like cures like". They say a substance that would cause certain symptoms in a well person can, once diluted, help a sick person with those same symptoms. This idea comes from the 1790s and has not been confirmed by modern science. They also hold that the shaking at each dilution step leaves an imprint of the original substance in the water or milk sugar. There is no measurable trace of the charcoal at 30C, and no accepted physics or biology supports the imprint idea. So any change you notice after taking it most likely comes from something else: the illness easing on its own, other treatment, or the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Carbo animalis come in? The most common form is a small white pill or pellet made of milk sugar, with the remedy sprayed on. These are usually let to melt under the tongue. You can also buy liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Some pharmacies sell granules or a powder in single-dose tubes. Strengths are written as numbers and letters, such as 6X, 12C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more times it was diluted. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, introduced Carbo animalis in the 1830s. He described it in his book on chronic diseases. Later homeopathic writers used it in older patients with hard glands, slow-healing sores and poor circulation. It has stayed in homeopathic reference books ever since. Its standing is inside homeopathy only. It has no separate role in herbal medicine, Ayurveda or Chinese medicine.

Helps

What does Carbo animalis help with? Hard, swollen glands: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to Carbo animalis, especially glands that feel stony and sit under the arm or in the neck. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. A hard lump or gland that does not settle in a few weeks needs a doctor, not a home remedy. Weakness and exhaustion in older adults: Homeopathic texts describe an older person who feels cold, tired and shaky after any illness. Carbo animalis is one of the remedies they pick for that picture. There is no trial evidence for it. Lasting tiredness has many treatable causes, such as low iron, low thyroid or heart trouble, so it is worth getting checked. Slow-healing sores and ulcers: Older homeopathic books list it for sores on the legs that ooze and heal slowly. No published human study supports this use. A sore that has not healed in two weeks, or one on the foot if you have diabetes, should be seen by a nurse or doctor. Hoarseness and a weak voice: Homeopaths describe a hoarse, tired voice that gets worse in the evening and in damp weather. No trial has tested this. Hoarseness lasting more than three weeks needs checking, especially if you smoke. Poor circulation with cold, bluish hands and feet: The traditional picture includes cold limbs, a bluish tinge to the skin and a person who chills easily. There is no study evidence here. Cold, blue fingers or toes with pain can point to a circulation problem that a doctor should look at. Night sweats: Homeopathic texts mention heavy sweating at night that leaves the person drained. No trials exist for this use. Night sweats with fever, weight loss or lumps should always be reported to a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, introduced Carbo animalis in the 1830s.

Who should avoid Carbo animalis?

  • Do not use it for a lump, a hard gland or a sore that is not healing until a doctor has examined you.
  • Do not use it in place of medicine your doctor has prescribed, and never stop a prescribed drug to try it.
  • Do not use it for a fever, breathing trouble or an infection that is getting worse; these need real treatment.
  • Do not give it to a baby under one year old unless your doctor says it is fine.
  • Do not take the liquid drops if you avoid alcohol for health, recovery or religious reasons; the drops contain alcohol.
  • Do not take the pellets if you have a severe milk allergy, because the pellets are made from lactose (milk sugar).
  • Do not take low strengths such as 3X or 6X within two hours of any other medicine you swallow.
  • Avoid it while pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or midwife has said yes; it has not been studied in pregnancy.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you have a lump or hard gland that lasts more than two weeks, or that grows, or that feels stuck in place.

Also book an appointment if a sore has not healed in two weeks, if your voice stays hoarse for more than three weeks, or if you have night sweats along with fever or weight loss.

Get urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, a limb that turns cold and blue and painful, or sudden heavy bleeding. Do not wait to see if a remedy helps first.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
