Alumina

A long-standing staple of homeopathic practice, but human trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Alumina? Alumina is a homeopathic remedy made from aluminium oxide, also known as pure clay. Its Latin name is Aluminii oxidum (Argilla). It is a single drug remedy, given most often for long-term constipation with no urge to go, very dry skin, and dryness of the mouth and eyes. Alumina is made by serial dilution. The starting powder is ground with milk sugar, then diluted over and over, with hard shaking at each step. At the common 30C strength, essentially none of the original aluminium oxide is left. The honest verdict: Alumina has a long record of use inside homeopathy, but trials do not separate homeopathic remedies from placebo (a dummy pill). Traditional use is not proof that something works, and we say that once here rather than in every section below. How does Alumina work? There is no accepted explanation for how Alumina could work, because at 30C there is no measurable aluminium oxide in the pill. Homeopathy teaches that repeated dilution and shaking leaves an "imprint" of the starting substance, and that this imprint can prompt the body to correct symptoms that the raw substance would cause. Chemistry and physics do not support that idea, and no test has shown such an imprint exists. What you can expect is a placebo response. That is real and can feel helpful, but it comes from expectation, attention and time, not from the remedy itself. What forms does Alumina come in? Alumina comes in a small number of standard forms. Common forms: sugar pellets or tablets that you let melt under the tongue; liquid drops in a water and alcohol base; and lactose (milk sugar) powders in single-dose paper folds. Strengths are labelled 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C. 30C is the strength most often sold over the counter. Where it comes from: Alumina was written up by Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, in his Chronic Diseases in the 1820s and 1830s. It entered homeopathic practice through "provings", where healthy volunteers took the substance and wrote down every symptom they noticed. Those symptom lists, not trials, are what shaped its traditional use. It has stayed in homeopathic textbooks and kits ever since, making it a long-standing staple of that one tradition.

Helps

What does Alumina help with? Long-term constipation with no urge to pass stool: This is the picture homeopaths link most closely to Alumina: stool that is soft yet still hard to pass, with no urge for days. The link comes from old symptom records, not from trials. No published human trial has tested Alumina for constipation. Very dry, itchy, cracked skin: Homeopathic texts describe skin that is dry, rough and itchy, and worse in winter. This use rests on tradition alone. Plain moisturiser has good evidence behind it and is the sensible first step. Dryness of the mouth, nose and eyes: Traditional descriptions include a dry mouth and dry, gritty eyes. There is no trial evidence that Alumina changes these symptoms. Lasting dryness can point to a medical cause worth checking. Numbness and tingling in the hands or feet: Old provings list numbness, tingling and a heavy, unsteady feeling in the legs. No human study supports using Alumina for this. New or spreading numbness needs a doctor, not a remedy. Confusion or low mood in older people: Homeopaths have long used Alumina for slow thinking and dullness in older people. This is a traditional picture with no trial support at all. Memory change in an older adult should always be assessed by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Alumina was written up by Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, in his Chronic Diseases in the 1820s and 1830s.

Who should avoid Alumina?

  • Do not use if you are relying on it instead of a prescribed medicine, or instead of seeing a doctor about a problem that is not getting better
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis (a machine that filters your blood) and the label shows a low dilution such as 3X or 6X, which may still hold traces of aluminium
  • Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to lactose (milk sugar), sucrose or any other ingredient listed on the pack
  • Do not use if you are giving pellets to a child under three, because a hard pellet can block the airway
  • Do not use if you have new or spreading numbness, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden change in bowel habit, as these need a doctor first
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without checking with your doctor or midwife first

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if constipation lasts more than two weeks, if you cannot pass stool or wind at all, or if you have belly pain with vomiting.

Get checked promptly for blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or a bowel habit that changes suddenly after age 50.

See a doctor about numbness or tingling that is new, spreading or one-sided, and about memory or thinking changes in an older adult. Get urgent help for a rash with swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
