Viola tricolor

Evidence grade insufficient: no trial separates it from placebo. Traditional tier T2, a long-standing minor remedy in homeopathy with older European folk

What is Viola tricolor? Viola tricolor is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the wild pansy, also called heartsease. In homeopathy it is used mostly for crusty, itchy skin rashes, above all in children. A homeopathic remedy is made by diluting a plant again and again. Each step thins the mix and shakes it. At 30C, so little of the plant is left that there is almost certainly none at all. Trials have not shown that it works better than a dummy pill (placebo). A long history of use is not proof that a thing works. The plant is old in European folk medicine, but tradition and proof are two separate matters. How does Viola tricolor work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body. At 30C no plant matter is left to do anything. Homeopathy works from a rule called "like cures like". The idea is that a substance which causes signs in a well person can ease those same signs in a sick one. This is a belief inside the system, not a tested fact. When people feel better, the likely reasons are simple. Many skin and urine complaints clear up on their own. Placebo effect and the care of a kind listener can also play a part. What forms does Viola tricolor come in? Most people take Viola tricolor as small sugar pills. Liquid dilutions and drops are also sold. The label shows a potency, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The number tells you how many times the plant was diluted. A higher number means more dilution, not more strength in the normal sense. The mother tincture is a different thing. It is marked Ø or MT and still holds real plant matter. Creams and ointments made from it are sold for use on the skin. Where it comes from: Wild pansy has a long record in European folk medicine. Herbalists used it for crusty rashes, itchy skin and children's scalp complaints. It entered homeopathy in the 1800s, in the era of Samuel Hahnemann and the early provers. It has stayed a minor remedy there. Its main homeopathic picture is thick crusts on the scalp and face, with itching. Old texts also link it to cloudy, strong-smelling urine.

Helps

What does Viola tricolor help with? Cradle cap (crusty scalp rash in babies): This is the classic homeopathic use for Viola tricolor. Old texts describe thick, sticky crusts on the scalp with itching. No human trial has tested the remedy for this. Cradle cap also clears up on its own in most babies. Eczema-type rashes with thick crusts: Homeopathic texts pick this remedy for rashes that ooze and then crust over. There is no trial evidence to support that choice. Talk to a doctor about eczema care that has been tested. Itchy skin: Tradition links the remedy to itching that is worse at night. Itching has many causes, from dry skin to allergy. No study shows this remedy helps it. Mild acne: Some homeopathic guides list pansy for spots on the face. This use comes from old case notes, not from testing. No human trial backs it. Bedwetting in children: Older homeopathic texts mention it for children who wet the bed. There is no trial evidence for this. Bedwetting is common and usually stops with age. Cloudy, strong-smelling urine: The remedy picture includes urine with a sharp smell. This is a described symptom pattern, not a proven effect. Urine that smells strong or looks cloudy can mean an infection, so get it checked.

Where it comes from:

Wild pansy has a long record in European folk medicine.

Who should avoid Viola tricolor?

  • Do not use this remedy in place of care your doctor has advised for a serious illness.
  • Do not give alcohol-based drops or mother tincture (an alcohol extract that still holds plant matter) to babies or young children.
  • Do not take the mother tincture or pansy tea if you are allergic to aspirin or to salicylates (aspirin-like compounds).
  • Do not take the mother tincture if you use warfarin or another blood-thinning medicine.
  • Do not take the mother tincture or tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as its safety has not been tested.
  • Do not use alcohol-based drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole (medicines that react badly with alcohol), or if you are avoiding alcohol.
  • Do not rely on it alone for a skin infection that is spreading, oozing pus or painful.
  • Do not use it instead of seeing a doctor for a suspected urine infection.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a rash spreads fast, weeps pus, or comes with a fever. Also get help if a baby's scalp rash bleeds, smells bad or covers a wide area.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips, face or tongue, or for trouble breathing after taking any remedy. That may be a severe allergic reaction.

Book an appointment if burning on passing urine, cloudy urine or bedwetting is new, or lasts more than a week or two.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
