Baryta iodata

Recognised in homeopathic texts (T1), but no human trials separate it from placebo, so the evidence grade is insufficient.

What is Baryta iodata? Baryta iodata is a homeopathic single remedy made from barium iodide. Homeopaths reach for it mainly for swollen neck glands, large tonsils in children, and hard, lumpy glands in older adults. It comes as sugar pellets, tablets or liquid drops. It is made by serial dilution. The starting salt is diluted over and over, with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, the strength most shops sell, essentially none of the original barium iodide is left in the pill. Trials do not show this remedy doing more than placebo (a dummy treatment). Long use inside a tradition is not proof that something works, so this page reports the tradition and the testing side by side, and does not repeat that point again. How does Baryta iodata work? There is no accepted way this remedy could work in the body, because at 30C there is nothing of the source salt left to act. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes signs in a well person is thought to clear similar signs in a sick one. The second is that shaking during dilution leaves an imprint of the original salt. Neither idea has support from chemistry or from controlled human trials. Any benefit people report is best explained by time, by ordinary healing, and by the care and attention of the visit. What forms does Baryta iodata come in? You will usually find it in these forms: Sugar pellets or granules that melt under the tongue. Small tablets. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. Some suppliers also list low decimal strengths such as 3X, which are far closer to the raw salt and deserve more caution. Where it comes from: Baryta iodata came into homeopathy in the 1800s, when followers of Samuel Hahnemann were testing many mineral salts. Iodides were in fashion at the time for swollen glands. Early homeopathic books list it for large tonsils in children and for hard, lumpy glands in older people. Those entries came from provings and case notes, not from trials. It has stayed a small, second-line remedy. It is used far less than plain Baryta carbonica, and it belongs to one tradition only.

Helps

What does Baryta iodata help with? Swollen lymph glands (small lumps in the neck and armpits that help fight germs): This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: glands that stay swollen and feel firm. The claim rests on old case notes, not on trials. A gland that stays swollen for more than two weeks needs a doctor, not a remedy. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids (tissue at the back of the nose and throat): Homeopathic texts suggest it for children with big tonsils, mouth breathing and snoring. No published human trial has tested it for this. Loud snoring or pauses in breathing at night should be checked by a doctor. Repeated sore throats in children: Traditional use covers children who catch throat infections again and again. There is no trial evidence that it lowers how often these happen. It is not a substitute for antibiotics when a doctor says they are needed. Hard, lumpy glands in older adults: Older homeopathic books pair the remedy with hardened glands and thyroid lumps in later life. This is tradition only. Any new lump in the neck must be examined, because some lumps are serious. Slow growth or slow development in children: Homeopaths have used barium remedies for children who are slow to grow or slow to learn. There is no trial support for this at all. Delay in growth or learning needs a proper medical check. Hardening of the arteries in older people: A few old texts list it for stiff arteries and high blood pressure in the elderly. No human trial backs this. High blood pressure is treatable, and leaving it untreated carries real risk.

You will usually find it in these forms:

Sugar pellets or granules that melt under the tongue. Small tablets. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base.

Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. Some suppliers also list low decimal strengths such as 3X, which are far closer to the raw salt and deserve more caution.

Where it comes from:

Baryta iodata came into homeopathy in the 1800s, when followers of Samuel Hahnemann were testing many mineral salts.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Baryta iodata need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Baryta iodata?

  • Do not use if you are taking a thyroid (a gland in your neck) medicine, unless your doctor has checked it first, because the source salt contains iodine.
  • Do not use if you have an overactive or underactive thyroid, or a thyroid lump, without medical advice.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because extra iodine can affect a baby's thyroid.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not use if you are relying on it in place of antibiotics or other treatment your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use if you have a lump or a swollen gland that a doctor has not examined.
  • Do not use if you have ever had a rash or swelling after iodine, iodised contrast dye or iodine skin wash.
  • Do not use if you are considering a very low strength such as 1X, 2X or 3X without a qualified practitioner, because these can still contain barium.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest milk sugar (lactose) and the pellets are made with it.
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol and the product is a liquid made with alcohol.
  • Do not use if you are tempted to buy raw barium iodide or any other barium salt from a lab or chemical supplier. Soluble barium salts are poisons. They can cause severe muscle weakness, low potassium (a salt your body needs), dangerous heart rhythms and death.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a swollen gland or lump lasts more than two weeks, grows, feels hard, or does not move under the skin.

See a doctor if a sore throat comes with a high fever, drooling, a stiff neck, or trouble swallowing. Also get help if your child snores loudly or stops breathing for moments during sleep.

Go to an emergency department straight away if anyone swallows raw barium iodide or another barium chemical. Warning signs are muscle weakness, numbness around the mouth, vomiting, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or trouble breathing. Take the container with you.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
