Vipera berus

Evidence grade insufficient: no trial separates it from placebo, and no venom remains at 30C. Traditional tier T1: a recognised but minor remedy within

Home

What is Vipera berus? Vipera berus is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from the venom of the common European adder, also called the German viper. Homeopaths have used it mainly for sore, swollen veins and for heavy, puffy legs. The venom is mixed with water and alcohol, then diluted over and over. Each step is shaken hard. At the common 30C strength, so little is left that not even one molecule of venom remains. What you take is the sugar pill or the liquid it was dropped onto. Long use inside a tradition is not the same as proof that something works. Trials in people have not shown this remedy to do more than a dummy pill (a placebo). We say that once here, so you can read the rest of this page with it in mind. How does Vipera berus work? There is no accepted way for a 30C remedy to act on the body, because no venom is left in it. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is "like cures like": a thing that causes signs in a well person is given, in tiny amounts, to a sick person with those same signs. Adder bites cause swelling, bruising and sore veins, so the remedy is matched to those signs. The second idea is that shaking each dilution leaves an effect behind in the liquid. Chemistry and physics have found no sign of this. Any change people notice is best explained by placebo, by normal healing over time, or by other care they are having. What forms does Vipera berus come in? You will most often see it as small sugar pills or granules that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in an alcohol base are also sold. Strengths are written as 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C, or as 6X, 12X and 30X. The higher the number, the more it has been diluted. 30C is the usual over-the-counter strength. It is sold as a single remedy. It also turns up as one part of some mixed "vein" or "circulation" products. Where it comes from: Vipera berus was written into homeopathic materia medica (the reference books of the tradition) in the 1800s, after homeopaths took the remedy themselves and recorded what they felt. It has stayed a small, specialist remedy since then, kept for vein and swelling pictures. It is not one of the heavily used core remedies of the system, and it belongs to homeopathy alone, not to herbal or Ayurvedic practice.

Helps

What does Vipera berus help with? Sore, swollen veins (phlebitis): This is the classic use in homeopathic books. The picture is a vein that feels hot, tender and bursting, and feels worse when the leg hangs down. No human trials of Vipera berus for this have been published. Sore, hot, swollen veins also need a doctor, because they can point to a clot. Varicose veins (swollen, twisted veins near the skin): Homeopaths have used it for aching, heavy varicose veins. There is no trial evidence that it shrinks veins or eases the ache better than a dummy pill. Compression stockings, walking and weight care do have real evidence behind them. Heavy, puffy legs: The remedy picture includes legs that feel like they must be raised for relief. This is a traditional match of signs, not a tested result. Puffy legs can come from heart, kidney or liver problems, so get new or worsening swelling checked. Swollen lymph glands: Some older homeopathic texts list swollen glands with heat and tenderness. No human study has looked at this. Glands that stay swollen for more than two weeks need a doctor's opinion. Easy bruising and a feeling of fullness in the limbs: This use comes from what real adder venom does, read back through the "like cures like" rule. It has never been tested in people. New, easy bruising can be a sign of a blood problem and should be checked.

Where it comes from:

Vipera berus was written into homeopathic materia medica (the reference books of the tradition) in the 1800s, after homeopaths took the remedy themselves and recorded what they felt.

It has stayed a small, specialist remedy since then, kept for vein and swelling pictures. It is not one of the heavily used core remedies of the system, and it belongs to homeopathy alone, not to herbal or Ayurvedic practice.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Vipera berus need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Vipera berus?

  • Do not use if you think you may have a blood clot in a vein (a red, hot, swollen, painful leg) — call a doctor or emergency services instead
  • Do not use if you have chest pain or sudden breathlessness: this can mean a clot has moved to your lungs and is an emergency
  • Do not use if you are taking a blood thinner and are thinking of stopping or lowering it to try this remedy
  • Do not use if you are bleeding, bruising easily for no clear reason, or have a known bleeding disorder, until a doctor has seen you
  • Do not use if you are offered any preparation weaker than 4X, or any raw or "low potency" adder venom, as it may still contain real venom
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without first asking your doctor or midwife
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you cannot digest milk sugar and the pills are lactose-based — ask for a sucrose version
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol, or take disulfiram or metronidazole, and the product is alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you are relying on it in place of a medicine your doctor has prescribed

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if you have chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or you cough up blood. These can mean a clot has reached your lungs.

See a doctor the same day if one leg is swollen, hot, red and painful, if a vein feels hard and tender, or if a skin sore over a vein is not healing.

Make an ordinary appointment if your legs stay puffy, if you bruise easily for no reason, if a swollen gland lasts more than two weeks, or if your symptoms have not settled after about a week.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
