Bromium

A long-standing staple remedy within homeopathy alone, with no human trial evidence showing it works better than a dummy pill.

Home

What is Bromium? Bromium is a homeopathic remedy made from bromine, a dark red liquid element. Homeopaths pick it for a barking croupy cough, a hoarse voice, hard swollen neck glands, and tight breathing that feels worse in a warm or smoky room. Its Latin name is Bromum, and it is also called Bromine. It is a single remedy, not a mixture. The bromine is diluted over and over, with shaking at each step. At 30C, the strength most shops sell, essentially none of the original bromine is left in the pill. The evidence verdict is short. No human trials of Bromium itself have been published, and trials of homeopathy as a whole do not separate it from placebo (a dummy pill). Its standing is traditional, within homeopathy only, and traditional use is not proof that something works. How does Bromium work? There is no accepted way that Bromium could act on the body at common homeopathic strengths, because no measurable bromine remains in the pill. Homeopathy works from its own idea, called "like cures like". Breathing in raw bromine gas makes people cough, choke and sound hoarse. Homeopaths therefore give the heavily diluted form to people with those same symptoms. Homeopaths also believe that shaking at each dilution step leaves an imprint of the original substance in the water or alcohol. Chemistry and physics have not shown such an imprint exists, and no experiment has confirmed it. Treat this as belief and tradition, not as a proven mechanism. Any benefit people report is best explained by the natural easing of the illness over time, by careful attention during a long consultation, and by placebo effect. What forms does Bromium come in? Bromium comes in the usual homeopathic forms: Small sugar pellets or pills, most often 6C, 30C or 200C. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Low "decimal" strengths such as 1X, 2X or 3X, which may still contain measurable bromine. Mother tincture, the undiluted starting liquid, which is a laboratory material and not a consumer product. It also appears as one named ingredient inside combination cough or croup products. Check the label, because those mixtures also contain other remedies. Where it comes from: Bromine was discovered in 1826. The German-American homeopath Constantine Hering and his colleagues tested it on healthy volunteers in the 1830s and 1840s and wrote up the symptoms it produced. From those notes Bromium entered homeopathic materia medica as a remedy for croup, hoarseness and hard swollen glands. It has stayed a recognised remedy in that one tradition ever since, and appears in standard homeopathic repertories. It has no role in herbal medicine, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine or conventional pharmacy.

Helps

What does Bromium help with? Barking, croup-type cough in children: This is the classic use in homeopathic books, and it has no trial support. Homeopaths describe a hoarse, rattling, barking cough that is worse when breathing in warm air. Croup can block a small child's airway. A child who is struggling to breathe, drooling or turning blue needs emergency care at once, not a pill. Hoarse voice and laryngitis (swelling of the voice box): Traditional homeopathic use only. The picture in the old books is a rough, deep, scratchy voice with a dry throat and a wish for cold air. Most hoarseness clears on its own within two weeks. Hoarseness that lasts longer than three weeks needs a doctor, especially if you smoke. Hard, swollen neck glands: Homeopaths have long chosen Bromium for glands that feel stony hard, especially on the left side. No trial has tested this. A lump in the neck that grows, does not go away, or comes with night sweats or weight loss must be checked by a doctor. Wheezy, tight breathing worse in warm rooms: In homeopathic practice Bromium is linked to people who breathe better by the sea or in cool air and worse in hot, dusty rooms. There is no human trial evidence for this use. Asthma can kill. Never swap a prescribed inhaler or preventer for a homeopathic pill. Acne, boils and pimples: A minor traditional use, based on the fact that bromide drugs used to cause an acne-like rash. Evidence for the diluted remedy is absent. Sore, spreading skin lumps with fever may be an infection that needs antibiotics.

Bromium comes in the usual homeopathic forms:

Small sugar pellets or pills, most often 6C, 30C or 200C.

Where it comes from:

Bromine was discovered in 1826.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Bromium need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Bromium?

  • Never swallow raw bromine or a mother tincture; raw bromine is corrosive and burns the mouth, throat and lungs.
  • Never use Bromium in place of an asthma inhaler, steroid or antibiotic that a doctor has prescribed for you.
  • Do not use it for a child with croup who is struggling to breathe, drooling, or whose lips or face look blue or grey; call emergency services instead.
  • Do not use very low dilutions, such as 1X, 2X or 3X, without medical advice, because these can still contain real bromine.
  • Do not use low dilutions if you have a thyroid problem or take thyroid medicine, as bromine may interfere with how the gland uses iodine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not use if you have ever had a bad reaction to bromine or to bromide medicines.
  • Do not use alcohol-based drops if you are giving them to a baby, or if you avoid alcohol.
  • Do not use the sugar pellets if you have a lactose problem, uncontrolled diabetes, or a rare sugar disorder, without checking the label with a pharmacist.

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if a child is fighting for breath, cannot speak or swallow, is drooling, or has blue or grey lips or skin. Do the same for a sudden severe asthma attack, or if anyone has swallowed or breathed in raw bromine.

See a doctor the same day for a high fever with a stiff neck, a cough that brings up blood, or chest pain.

Book an appointment if a neck lump does not go away in two weeks, if hoarseness lasts more than three weeks, or if a cough lasts more than three weeks. Also go if symptoms keep coming back, or if you are thinking about stopping a prescribed medicine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
