What is Ammonium causticum?

Ammonium causticum is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from aqua ammoniae, also called caustic ammonia water. Homeopaths reach for it for a raw, burning sore throat, a hoarse or lost voice, and tight, noisy breathing.

The remedy is made by serial dilution. A drop of the source is mixed with water or alcohol and shaken, then a drop of that mix is diluted again, over and over.

At 30C, the usual strength sold in shops, none of the starting ammonia is left. What you buy is a sugar pellet or a water drop with a very long dilution history.

Here is the plain verdict. No human trial has tested this remedy on its own, and broad reviews of homeopathy find no effect beyond a dummy pill (placebo). Long use inside a tradition is not proof that something works, and that point is made here once for the whole page.

How does Ammonium causticum work?

There is no known way for a 30C pellet to act on the body. At that dilution the source ammonia is gone, so there is no dose to act.

Homeopathy rests on its own idea, called "like cures like". Raw ammonia fumes burn the throat and make breathing tight. So the tradition uses the diluted form for people with a burning throat and tight breathing.

Homeopaths also say the shaking step leaves a trace or pattern in the liquid. Chemistry and physics do not support that claim, and no test has shown such a trace. Reported benefit is best explained by placebo, by the natural fading of a cold or sore throat, and by the care and time of a long consultation.

Common forms you will see on a shelf:

Sugar pellets or pills, usually 6C, 12C or 30C.

Liquid drops in water and alcohol, in the same range of dilutions.

Low dilutions such as 1X or 3X, which may still hold measurable ammonia. These belong with a trained practitioner, not on a shelf.

Undiluted aqua ammoniae is a corrosive chemical, not a remedy. It is never for home use.

Where it comes from:

Aqua ammoniae was tested by homeopaths in the 1800s, in the era of Samuel Hahnemann and the provers who followed him. A "proving" meant healthy people took the substance and wrote down what they felt.

The notes from those tests, plus later case reports, are where the throat, voice and breathing picture comes from. It stayed a smaller, less used remedy in the homeopathic repertories rather than a front-rank one.

What does Ammonium causticum help with?

• Burning, raw sore throat: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to the remedy: a throat that feels scalded, with swelling and trouble swallowing. No human trial has tested it for sore throat. Most sore throats settle on their own in about a week, which makes any single remedy look helpful.
• Hoarseness or loss of voice: Old homeopathic texts list a rough, hoarse or missing voice, often with a burning throat. The evidence here is case notes and provings, not trials. Voice rest, fluids and time are the measures with real support.
• Tight, noisy breathing described in old texts as croupy: The tradition lists a barking cough and hard, tight breathing. Nothing in the trial record supports using it for this. Breathing trouble, especially in a child, needs a doctor the same day, not a pellet.
• Faintness and weakness: Sharp ammonia was once sniffed as smelling salts to rouse someone who had fainted, and the homeopathic picture keeps a theme of collapse and weakness. The diluted remedy has not been tested for this. Repeated fainting needs a medical check, as it can point to a heart or blood pressure problem.
• Aching, heavy, varicose veins: Some repertories list swollen, sore leg veins under this remedy. There are no human trials. Compression stockings, movement and weight control have real evidence behind them.

Which foods are rich in Ammonium causticum?

This is a manufactured chemical preparation. It is not found in food, and no food contains it.

What are the side effects of Ammonium causticum?

• No effects at all, which is the usual report at 30C
• A brief flare of the symptoms you already had, which homeopaths call an aggravation
• Stomach upset from the sugar carrier in large amounts
• A problem for anyone who cannot digest lactose (milk sugar), as pellets often contain it
• Rare allergic reaction to a pellet ingredient, with rash, itching or swelling
• Burns to the mouth, throat, eyes or skin if undiluted or very low dilution ammonia is touched or swallowed
• Delay in getting real treatment, which is the main harm of relying on this remedy

Good to know:

At 30C there is nothing in the pellet but sugar, so direct harm is very unlikely. The real risks are the sugar carrier, a rare allergy, and above all putting off care that works.

The source chemical is a different story. Caustic ammonia water burns tissue on contact, and breathing its fumes can injure the lungs. That risk belongs to the raw material and to very low dilutions, not to a 30C pellet.

How much Ammonium causticum should you take?

• Recommended daily: No proven dose exists, because no trial has shown the remedy does anything. Nothing below is a medical recommendation; it only describes what homeopaths do. A common home practice is 3 to 5 pellets of 30C, or 3 to 5 drops, taken two or three times a day for a short spell. Homeopaths often stop as soon as the person feels better. Labels and practitioners differ widely, so follow the label on the pack you hold.
• Best time of day: No time of day has been shown to matter. Homeopaths usually space doses through the day and stop once symptoms ease.
• With or without food: The usual practice is to take pellets in a clean mouth, about 15 minutes away from food, drink, coffee, mint or toothpaste. This is tradition, not a tested rule.
• Time to effect: No reliable time frame exists, since no effect beyond placebo has been shown. Homeopaths often claim a change within hours to a day or two.
• How long to take it: Short use only, usually a few days. If your throat, voice or breathing is no better after 3 days, stop and see a doctor. Do not let a pellet stand in for care of a fever, a spreading infection, or breathing that is getting harder.
