Ammonium muriaticum

Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of homeopathic practice. Evidence grade insufficient: no trial shows it works better than placebo, and at 30C

Home

What is Ammonium muriaticum? Ammonium muriaticum is a homeopathic single remedy made from sal ammoniac, the mineral salt ammonium chloride. Its Latin pharmacy name is Ammonii chloridum. Homeopaths have traditionally chosen it for thick, sticky catarrh (mucus in the nose and throat), hoarseness, and certain nerve and back pains. The salt is not given as it is. It is ground with milk sugar and then diluted over and over, with shaking at each step. At the common strength of 30C, essentially none of the original sal ammoniac remains in the pellet you swallow. Here is the plain verdict. Controlled trials do not show that homeopathic remedies work better than placebo (a dummy treatment), and none have tested this remedy on its own. Ammonium muriaticum has a real place in homeopathic tradition, but traditional use is not proof that something works; the two are separate questions and this page reports both. Use this page to understand what the remedy is and what people claim for it. Do not use it to replace treatment your doctor has given you. How does Ammonium muriaticum work? The honest answer comes first: there is no accepted explanation for how a 30C dilution could act on the body, because no source molecules are left in it. Chemistry sets a hard limit on how far a substance can be diluted and still contain anything at all. Homeopathic theory says otherwise. It holds that a substance which causes symptoms in a healthy person can, when diluted and shaken, prompt the body to correct similar symptoms in a sick person. That idea has not held up in experiments that other researchers can repeat. Crude ammonium chloride does have real chemistry. It has been used to loosen mucus and to make urine more acidic, and in large amounts it shifts the body's acid balance. Those are effects of the raw salt in measurable doses, not of a high homeopathic dilution. What forms does Ammonium muriaticum come in? Most people take it as small sugar pellets soaked in the diluted liquid. Liquid drops in an alcohol and water base, and lactose tablets or powders, are also sold. Potencies are labelled with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C, 200C, 6X or 12X. The higher the number, the more dilution steps were used. At 30C, essentially none of the original sal ammoniac remains. Low potencies such as 1X to 3X, and the mother tincture, can still contain measurable ammonium chloride. These are the forms that carry real chemical risk. Check the label, and ask a pharmacist if the strength is not clear. Where it comes from: Sal ammoniac has been known since ancient times and was collected near the temple of Amun in Egypt, which is where the name comes from. Metalworkers, dyers and early chemists all used it. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, tested it on healthy volunteers in the early 1800s and published the picture of symptoms it produced. It has stayed in homeopathic materia medica books ever since as a smaller, well-described remedy. That gives it a long standing inside one tradition. It has no separate record in herbal medicine, Ayurveda or Chinese medicine as a prepared remedy of this kind.

Helps

What does Ammonium muriaticum help with? Thick, sticky nasal catarrh (mucus in the nose and throat): This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: a blocked nose that still runs, with mucus that is thick and hard to clear. No clinical trial has tested Ammonium muriaticum for catarrh. Steam, saline rinses and time have better support. Hoarseness and a dry, tickling cough: Homeopathic texts list a scraping throat and a cough that is worse in the afternoon or evening. The evidence here is textbook description, not trial data. See a doctor if hoarseness lasts more than three weeks. Sciatica-type leg and hip pain: Traditional prescribing calls for pain that is worse when sitting and eased by walking. That pattern comes from Hahnemann's original volunteer testing. There is no human trial showing the remedy relieves sciatica. Constipation with hard, crumbly stools: Old materia medica books describe stools that break apart and are hard to pass. Fibre, fluids and movement have real evidence behind them; this remedy does not. Persistent change in bowel habit needs a doctor's assessment. Cracked, painful heels: A well-known keynote in homeopathic texts is soreness and cracking of the heels. It is a prescribing clue rather than a tested treatment. No trials have looked at it. Stiff, aching lower back: Homeopaths select it for back stiffness that is worse from sitting still. Again, this rests on traditional symptom pictures alone. Back pain with numbness, weakness or bladder problems is a reason to seek urgent care.

Where it comes from:

Sal ammoniac has been known since ancient times and was collected near the temple of Amun in Egypt, which is where the name comes from.

Who should avoid Ammonium muriaticum?

  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (kidneys that do not filter well) and are offered the mother tincture or a low potency such as 1X to 3X, because real ammonium chloride can build up and upset your body's acid balance.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease (a damaged liver) in any form that still contains real ammonium chloride, as it can raise ammonia in the blood.
  • Do not use if you have been told you have metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the blood).
  • Do not use if you take spironolactone or another potassium-sparing water pill, unless your doctor has checked the specific product with you.
  • Do not use if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is an alcohol-based liquid.
  • Do not use if you must avoid lactose (milk sugar) for a medical reason such as galactosaemia (a rare inherited sugar disorder); most pellets are lactose-based.
  • Do not use if you would be replacing or delaying treatment your doctor has prescribed, including asthma inhalers and antibiotics.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without first asking your doctor, midwife or pharmacist.
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby, an unwell child or an older adult with a fever, breathing trouble or dehydration; those need proper medical care.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms last more than a week, keep coming back, or get worse while you are taking it.

Get medical help the same day for a fever above 39C, breathing that is hard or fast, chest pain, coughing up blood, or hoarseness that has lasted more than three weeks.

Go to an emergency department for confusion, severe weakness, deep and rapid breathing, or back pain with numbness in the groin or loss of bladder control.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
