Ammonium bromatum

Recognised in homeopathic practice since the 1800s as a minor remedy, but no human trials of it exist and homeopathy trials overall do not beat placebo

What is Ammonium bromatum? Ammonium bromatum is a homeopathic single remedy made from ammonium bromide, a salt of bromine. Its Latin name is Ammonii bromidum, and it is also sold as Ammonium bromide. Homeopaths choose it mainly for a raw, tickling throat with hoarseness and a dry cough that is worse at night. It is also given in homeopathy for long-running catarrh (a build-up of mucus) in the nose and throat. The remedy is made by diluting the salt over and over, shaking it hard at each step. At common strengths such as 30C, none of the original salt is left in the pellet. Low strengths such as 1X or 3X are different, because they can still hold real bromide, and bromide builds up in the body. That is why the safety section below matters even though this is a homeopathic product. There are no human trials of this remedy, and trials of homeopathy as a whole do not separate it from placebo (a dummy treatment). Its standing in homeopathic practice is genuine, but traditional use is not proof that a remedy works. How does Ammonium bromatum work? There is no accepted explanation for how Ammonium bromatum could act once it is diluted past the point where any of the salt remains. Homeopathy works from the idea of "like cures like": a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person is given in tiny amounts to treat similar symptoms. Practitioners also believe that diluting and shaking the mix leaves behind an effect. Neither idea is supported by chemistry, biology or pharmacology (the science of how drugs act). In material amounts, bromide salts do have a real drug effect. They calm the nervous system and were once used to quiet coughs and control seizures (fits). That effect belongs to the raw salt and to very low dilutions, not to a 30C pellet. What forms does Ammonium bromatum come in? Ammonium bromatum comes in a small number of standard homeopathic forms. The usual ones are sugar pellets or tablets that dissolve under the tongue, and liquid drops in an alcohol and water base. Strengths on the label run from low decimal potencies such as 1X and 3X up to 6C, 30C and higher. Some homeopathic cough and throat mixtures list Ammonium bromatum as one ingredient among several. Check the strength on any label, since low X potencies carry real bromide. Where it comes from: Ammonium bromatum entered homeopathy in the 1800s, when bromide salts were widely used in regular medicine as sedatives and seizure drugs. Homeopaths tested the salt in "provings", where healthy volunteers took doses and wrote down what they felt. The throat and cough picture that came out of those reports is still the one used today, and it appears in nineteenth-century American materia medica texts. Regular medicine dropped bromide salts in the twentieth century after long use caused bromism (bromide poisoning). Homeopathy kept the remedy as a minor, narrowly used one rather than a mainstay.

Helps

What does Ammonium bromatum help with? Hoarseness with a raw, tickling throat: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy, taken from nineteenth-century provings and repeated in homeopathic texts ever since. No clinical trial has tested Ammonium bromatum for hoarseness. Most hoarseness from a cold settles on its own within one to two weeks, which makes any single treatment hard to judge without a trial. Dry night-time cough: Homeopaths pick this remedy when a dry cough comes on after lying down and keeps you awake. There is no trial evidence for this use. Bromide in material doses does calm the cough reflex, but a 30C pellet contains no bromide, so that effect does not carry over. Long-running catarrh of the nose and throat: Homeopathic sources describe thick mucus at the back of the throat with constant throat-clearing as a reason to choose it. No human study supports this. Mucus that lasts more than a few weeks needs a proper diagnosis, since it can come from allergy, reflux (acid coming back up), or sinus disease. Sore throat with thick mucus: This is a traditional homeopathic indication only, drawn from the same provings. There is no trial evidence. A sore throat with high fever, drooling or trouble swallowing needs medical care, not a home remedy. Tight, croupy cough in homeopathic practice: Some homeopathic texts list it for a tight, barking cough, often alongside other remedies. No trials support this, and croup in a child can block the airway. Barking cough with noisy breathing in a child is a reason to seek urgent care, not to try a remedy at home.

Where it comes from:

Ammonium bromatum entered homeopathy in the 1800s, when bromide salts were widely used in regular medicine as sedatives and seizure drugs.

Who should avoid Ammonium bromatum?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, because bromide crosses to the baby and has caused poisoning and rash in newborns
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, because bromide passes into breast milk
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function, since your body clears bromide very slowly and it can build up
  • Do not use if you have ever had bromism (bromide poisoning) or a bad reaction to any bromide medicine
  • Do not use if you take medicine for seizures (fits), sedatives or sleeping pills, unless your doctor has agreed to it
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child without a doctor's advice, especially in low potencies such as 1X to 3X
  • Do not use if you have acne or another skin rash that got worse on bromide before
  • Do not use if you take lithium, because bromide can upset the salt balance your lithium level depends on
  • Do not use if you would be taking it instead of proper care for trouble breathing, coughing up blood, chest pain or a high fever
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol and the product is a liquid, since homeopathic drops are usually alcohol-based
  • Do not use if you cannot tolerate lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are lactose-based

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a cough, hoarseness or sore throat lasts more than two weeks, or keeps coming back.

Get medical help the same day if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, a high fever, you are coughing up blood, or a child has a barking cough with noisy breathing.

Stop the remedy and speak to a doctor straight away if you notice a spreading spotty rash, unusual sleepiness, slurred speech, unsteady walking, confusion or low mood. These can be signs of too much bromide in the body.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
