Kali permanganicum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials support it, and dilution leaves nothing measurable. Traditional tier T1: a recognised but minor homeopathic

Home

What is Kali permanganicum? Kali permanganicum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from potassium permanganate, a purple salt. That salt is used in industry, and it is also used on skin to kill germs. Homeopaths give it mainly for sore, ulcerated throats, which are throats with open sores. They also give it for skin or nose discharges that smell bad. It is a single remedy, so it has one starting substance and not a blend. The remedy is made by serial dilution. That means it is watered down again and again, with a shake at each step. At the common 30C strength, almost none of the first salt is left. So what you take is a sugar pill, or a drop of water and alcohol. It once touched a much stronger solution. There is nothing more to it than that. The verdict on the evidence is simple. Trials do not separate remedies like this one from placebo, which is a dummy treatment. Long use in homeopathy is a record of custom, not proof that something works in the body. That point is made here once. It is not repeated in every section below. How does Kali permanganicum work? No one has an accepted explanation for how this remedy could act in the body. At 30C there is nothing left in it that we can measure, so there is nothing there to act. Homeopathy works from an idea called "like cures like". Raw potassium permanganate burns tissue and leaves open sores. So homeopaths give a very weak form for problems that look like that. Those problems are raw, ulcerated throats and sore, oozing skin. Homeopaths also hold that shaking at each step leaves an imprint of the first substance. Chemistry gives no support for that idea. Studies built to test it have not given results that hold up. Any benefit that people notice has simpler causes. Many illnesses clear up on their own. Attention, care and the placebo effect explain the rest. What forms does Kali permanganicum come in? The usual forms are small sugar pillules, granules, or drops in a base of water and alcohol. Strengths sold to the public include 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Chemists also sell raw potassium permanganate. It comes as purple crystals, or as ready-made weak solutions for soaking skin. That is a medicine in its own right, and it is not the homeopathic remedy. Never mix the two up. Raw crystals burn skin. Never swallow them, and never put them on skin undiluted. Where it comes from: Potassium permanganate was first made in the 1600s. It came into wide medical use in the 1800s. Doctors used it to clean wounds and water, and to treat snakebite. Homeopaths tested it and brought it in as a remedy in the later 1800s. By then its burning, sore-making effects were well known. It has stayed a minor remedy in homeopathic practice. It is used far less often than staples such as Belladonna or Mercurius.

Helps

What does Kali permanganicum help with? Sore throat with ulcers: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: a raw, burning throat with small ulcers and bad-smelling breath. No human trial has tested Kali permanganicum for sore throat. Most sore throats settle on their own within a week, which makes any remedy look effective. Tonsillitis: Homeopathic texts list it for swollen, ulcerated tonsils with foul odour. There is no trial evidence for this use. Tonsillitis caused by bacteria can need antibiotics, so get a sore throat with high fever checked rather than treated at home. Foul-smelling nasal discharge: Traditional homeopathic use covers a thick, smelly discharge from the nose, sometimes with crusting. Evidence is limited to case descriptions written by homeopaths, not to controlled trials. A long-lasting one-sided smelly discharge needs a doctor, since it can mean sinus disease or something stuck in the nose. Mouth and gum sores: The remedy is given for sore, bleeding gums and raw patches in the mouth. No controlled human study supports this. Mouth sores that last more than three weeks should be looked at by a dentist or doctor. Slow-healing skin ulcers and boils: Homeopaths use it for sore, discharging skin that heals slowly. Evidence here is traditional only. Diluted crude potassium permanganate soaks are a separate, real skin treatment used by doctors — that is not what this remedy is. Discharges that smell offensive: Bad odour is the thread running through the remedy picture. This is a prescribing guide used inside homeopathy, not a tested claim. A strong smell from a wound or discharge often signals infection and is a reason to seek care.

Where it comes from:

Potassium permanganate was first made in the 1600s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Kali permanganicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Kali permanganicum?

  • Do not use if you would be swallowing crude (undiluted) potassium permanganate crystals or solution — it burns the mouth, throat and stomach, can swell the airway shut, and has caused deaths.
  • Do not use if you are considering a mother tincture or a very low potency such as 1X, 2X or 3X, because these can still contain the raw chemical.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a doctor who knows your case agrees.
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or a child under 12 without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not use if you have a fever, a spreading infection, or a throat so sore that swallowing or breathing is hard — you need medical care now.
  • Do not use if you are relying on it in place of a prescribed medicine for asthma, diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy (a seizure disorder) or cancer.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease or kidney disease and the product is a low potency or tincture that may still contain the chemical.
  • Do not use if you have lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) and the pillules are lactose-based — ask for sucrose pillules or drops.
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol, are in recovery, or take disulfiram or metronidazole, and the product is an alcohol-based liquid.

When should you see a doctor?

Go to an emergency department straight away, or call your local emergency number, if anyone swallows crude potassium permanganate crystals or solution. Signs include burning in the mouth or throat, a brown or purple stain on the lips, drooling, vomiting, or trouble breathing. Take the container with you.

See a doctor the same day for a sore throat with a high fever, drooling, a stiff neck, or trouble swallowing or breathing. Also get help for a rash or swelling that spreads fast, a wound that smells bad, or redness that is tracking away from a sore.

Book an appointment if a sore throat, mouth sore or nasal discharge has not improved after three days, or if a mouth sore lasts more than three weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
