Kali carbonicum

A long-standing staple of classical homeopathy (T2), but the evidence grade is insufficient: no human trials of Kali carbonicum exist, and homeopathy

What is Kali carbonicum? Kali carbonicum is a homeopathic single remedy made from potassium carbonate, an alkaline mineral salt once known as potash. Homeopaths give it mainly for deep tiredness, weakness and pain in the lower back, and breathing trouble that wakes a person between about 2am and 4am. It is prepared by serial dilution. The starting salt is diluted over and over, with shaking at each step, so that at the common 30C strength essentially no molecule of the original potassium carbonate is left in the pill. Its standing inside homeopathy is long and solid, but traditional use is not proof of effect, and controlled trials have not shown homeopathic remedies to do more than placebo (a dummy pill). Read this page as an honest record of how the remedy is used, not as evidence that it treats disease. How does Kali carbonicum work? Homeopathy is built on a rule of similars: a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person is said to relieve similar symptoms in a sick person once it is heavily diluted. Kali carbonicum was placed with weakness, back pain and night-time breathlessness on that basis. There is no accepted physical mechanism for this. At 30C nothing of the original salt remains to act on the body, and the idea that water holds a "memory" of it has no support in chemistry or physics. In trials, people taking homeopathic pills report much the same improvement as people taking placebo. Feeling better after a dose does not show the pill caused the change, since many complaints settle on their own. What forms does Kali carbonicum come in? Kali carbonicum is sold mainly as small sugar pills (pillules) that dissolve under the tongue. Liquid drops in an alcohol and water base are also common. Strengths are written as 6C, 30C or 200C, and as 6X or 30X. A higher number means more dilution steps. 30C is the usual over-the-counter choice. Pills are normally made from lactose (milk sugar) or sucrose. Drops contain alcohol. Check the label if either matters for you or your child. Where it comes from: Potassium carbonate was taken from wood ash for centuries and used in soap, glass and baking. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, tested it on volunteers and published the results in his Chronic Diseases in the 1820s and 1830s. It became one of homeopathy's standard mineral remedies and appears in almost every classical materia medica (reference book of remedies). Its reputation rests on those old tests and on case reports passed between practitioners.

Helps

What does Kali carbonicum help with? Long-standing tiredness and weakness: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to Kali carbonicum: exhaustion out of proportion to effort, worse after any exertion. No human trial has tested the remedy for fatigue. Lasting tiredness has many treatable causes, such as low iron, thyroid problems or poor sleep, so get it checked. Lower back pain and a feeling of a weak back: Traditional texts describe back pain with a sense that the back could give way, often after childbirth or heavy lifting. This use comes from 19th-century case notes, not from trials. Back pain with numbness, leg weakness or bladder trouble needs medical assessment the same day. Asthma-type wheezing that is worse in the early hours: Homeopaths link the remedy to breathlessness that wakes a person around 2am to 4am, eased by sitting up and leaning forward. There is no reliable trial evidence that homeopathy helps asthma. Never use this instead of a prescribed inhaler or preventer medicine; asthma attacks can be fatal. Dry, tickling night cough: Old materia medica texts describe a dry cough with stitching chest pain. Evidence here is traditional only. A cough lasting more than three weeks, or one with blood, weight loss or fever, needs a doctor. Puffy swelling of the upper eyelids: Swelling of the upper lids, like small bags, is one of the best-known Kali carbonicum signs in homeopathic practice. It is a matching clue, not a tested treatment. New or one-sided facial swelling can signal kidney, thyroid or allergy problems and should be examined. Bloating and wind after eating: Traditional use covers a bloated, gassy stomach with a feeling of coldness. No human trial supports this. Persistent bloating, especially in women over 50, should be checked rather than self-treated. Anxiety felt in the stomach: Homeopathic texts describe fear and anxiety felt physically in the abdomen, often with fright on being touched. This is a symptom picture from provings, not a tested treatment for an anxiety disorder. Talk to your doctor if anxiety affects daily life. Slow recovery after childbirth or illness: Homeopaths have long used the remedy for weakness and back pain in the weeks after giving birth. The record is anecdotal. Heavy bleeding, fever, chest pain or breathlessness after childbirth is an emergency, not a case for self-care.

Where it comes from:

Potassium carbonate was taken from wood ash for centuries and used in soap, glass and baking.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Kali carbonicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Kali carbonicum?

  • Do not use Kali carbonicum in place of an inhaler, preventer or steroid tablets for asthma, and do not stop any prescribed asthma medicine to try it.
  • Do not use it for breathing that is new, severe or getting worse, for chest pain, or for coughing up blood — get medical help instead.
  • Do not swallow raw potassium carbonate (potash) or any very low strength below about 4X, because the salt is caustic (strong enough to burn) and can injure the mouth, throat and stomach.
  • Do not use crude or very low-strength preparations if you have kidney disease or hyperkalaemia (too much potassium in the blood), as extra potassium can upset your heart rhythm.
  • Do not use crude or very low-strength preparations if you take an ACE inhibitor, an ARB (both are blood pressure medicines), spironolactone (a water tablet), or a potassium supplement.
  • Do not use the sugar pills if you have a severe milk allergy or galactosaemia (a rare inherited problem with handling milk sugar), because most pills are made from lactose.
  • Do not give the alcohol-based liquid drops to babies or young children, and do not use them if you are avoiding alcohol.
  • Do not use it in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in a child under 2 without first asking a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not reduce or stop any prescribed medicine, such as thyroid, epilepsy or blood-thinning tablets, in order to try this remedy.

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if breathing is hard and getting worse, if speaking full sentences is a struggle, if lips or fingertips turn blue, or if a reliever inhaler is not helping. Go to A&E if someone has swallowed raw potash or a caustic product, and do not make them vomit.

See your doctor within a day or two for back pain with numbness, leg weakness or bladder problems, for a cough lasting more than three weeks, for heavy fatigue that does not lift, or for new swelling around the eyes or ankles.

Also see a doctor if you have taken Kali carbonicum for about a week with no change. Lasting symptoms deserve a proper diagnosis.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
