What is Kali ferrocyanatum? Kali ferrocyanatum is a homeopathic single drug. Its Latin name is Kalii ferrocyanidum. It is made from a yellow salt known as yellow prussiate of potash. Homeopaths have used it for a small set of complaints. Most of these are period pains, pain low in the belly, and a worn-out feeling. It is a minor remedy, so even homeopaths reach for it rarely. The salt is watered down again and again to make the remedy. At the common 30C strength, none of the starting salt is left. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill (placebo), and long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. How does Kali ferrocyanatum work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body at usual strengths. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes signs in a well person is said to treat those same signs in a sick one. The second is that shaking the liquid at each step leaves behind an effect. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry. Once a sample is watered down past about 12C, not one atom of the first substance is likely to remain. Any benefit people report is best explained by time, care and the placebo effect. What forms does Kali ferrocyanatum come in? You will most often see small sugar pellets. These are soaked with the watered-down remedy and left to dry. Liquid drops are the other common form. The liquid is usually water mixed with alcohol. Strengths are printed as 6C, 30C or 200C, and sometimes as 3X or 6X. Higher numbers mean more watering down, not more power in any measured sense. Where it comes from: The remedy dates from the 1800s, when homeopaths tested many chemical salts on healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those notes are called provings. It appears in old reference books such as Clarke's Dictionary and Boericke's Materia Medica. Both list it only briefly. It has never been a staple remedy. Its standing rests on one tradition and on a thin written record.

Helps

What does Kali ferrocyanatum help with? Painful periods: This is the main use in the old homeopathic books. They describe cramping pain with a heavy, dragging feeling. No human trial has tested the remedy for period pain, so we cannot say it helps. Pain low in the belly or over the ovaries: Old texts list a sharp pain on one side, often the left. This picture comes from 19th-century provings, not from testing on patients. New belly pain needs a real check-up, since it can point to a serious problem. Low back pain that comes with periods: The books pair back pain with the period symptoms above. There is no trial evidence for this use. Simple heat, movement and plain pain relief have far better support. A weak, worn-out feeling: Provings mention tiredness and a heavy feeling in the limbs. Lasting tiredness has many causes, such as low iron or a thyroid problem. Get it checked rather than treating it yourself. Vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea): Old sources describe a thick, wearing discharge. No study supports this use. A new or smelly discharge can mean an infection, which needs proper treatment.

Homeopaths have used it for a small set of complaints. Most of these are period pains, pain low in the belly, and a worn-out feeling. It is a minor remedy, so even homeopaths reach for it rarely.

Where it comes from:

The remedy dates from the 1800s, when homeopaths tested many chemical salts on healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those notes are called provings.

It appears in old reference books such as Clarke's Dictionary and Boericke's Materia Medica. Both list it only briefly.

It has never been a staple remedy. Its standing rests on one tradition and on a thin written record.

Who should avoid Kali ferrocyanatum?

  • Do not use if you have chest pain, heavy bleeding, a high fever or any other urgent problem — call for medical help instead.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of stopping or cutting down a prescribed medicine, unless your own doctor tells you to.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife agrees.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar), because most pellets are made from it.
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol, including the liquid drops, which usually sit in an alcohol base.
  • Do not use if you want to give it to a baby under one year, unless a doctor has checked the child first.
  • Do not use if the pack shows a low strength such as 1X, 2X or 3X, unless a qualified homeopath has advised it, since real potassium ferrocyanide is still present.
  • Do not use if you have a new lump, unexplained weight loss or bleeding between periods — these need a proper check-up.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your period pain is getting worse month by month, or if it stops you working or sleeping.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
