Kali sulphuricum

A long-standing staple of homeopathy and the tissue salt system, but no human trial evidence shows any benefit beyond placebo.

Home

What is Kali sulphuricum? Kali sulphuricum is a homeopathic remedy made from potassium sulphate, a plain mineral salt. Its Latin name is Kalii sulphas. It is a single remedy, so it has one source and not a blend. People take it for thick yellow mucus late in a cold. It is also used for flaky skin, dandruff and a stuffy head. It is one of the twelve tissue salts, a set of low-strength mineral remedies. The salt is watered down over and over, and at 30C no source salt is left. Tests do not show it beats a dummy pill. It has a long record of use, but that is not proof that it works. How does Kali sulphuricum work? Homeopaths believe a very dilute substance can nudge the body to heal. The salt is diluted in steps, with hard shaking at each step. They call this potentisation. This idea does not match what we know about chemistry. By 30C, not one molecule of the salt is likely to be left. Any change you feel is most likely a placebo effect. A placebo effect means feeling better from a pill with nothing active in it. Tissue salts rest on a second idea. Wilhelm Schuessler thought cells ran short of tiny amounts of mineral salts. Research has not backed up that idea either. Low strengths, such as 6X, do hold a trace of the salt. That trace is far too small to act as a food or a drug. What forms does Kali sulphuricum come in? Kali sulphuricum comes as small sugar pills that melt under the tongue. Tissue salt tablets are most often 6X. Homeopathic pharmacies also sell 6C, 30C and higher dilutions. You can also buy liquid drops in water and alcohol. Some creams and mixed tissue salt blends list it too. Labels show the strength as an X or a C number. Where it comes from: Kali sulphuricum has been used in homeopathy since the 1800s. Wilhelm Schuessler, a German doctor, made it one of his twelve tissue salts in 1873. He thought each salt made up for a shortfall inside the cells. It also turns up in older homeopathic texts for colds and skin trouble. Homeopathic pharmacies still sell it worldwide today.

Helps

What does Kali sulphuricum help with? Late-stage colds with thick yellow mucus: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Kali sulphuricum. Books describe a cold that has moved on from clear mucus to thick yellow mucus. No human trial has tested this remedy for colds, so the claim rests on tradition alone. Cough with rattling in the chest: Homeopaths pick it for a loose cough with a rattling sound and yellow phlegm. There is no trial evidence behind this use. A rattling cough with fever or breathing trouble needs a doctor, not a home remedy. Dandruff and a flaky scalp: Tissue salt books link this remedy to yellow, sticky flakes on the scalp. It is a long-standing use in that tradition. No published human study supports it. Dry, scaly patches of skin: Old homeopathic texts describe scaly skin that peels. Some people use the remedy alongside a plain moisturiser. Nothing in the research shows the pills change skin. A blocked, stuffy feeling in the ears after a cold: Tradition links it to a full feeling in the ears once a cold is clearing. There is no trial evidence for this. Ear pain, fluid or hearing loss that lasts should be checked by a doctor.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
