Alumen

A long-standing staple remedy within homeopathy, but human trial evidence does not distinguish it from placebo.

Home

What is Alumen? Alumen is a homeopathic single remedy made from potash alum, a mineral salt of potassium and aluminium. Its Latin name is Kalii et aluminii sulphas. Homeopaths give it mostly for dryness and for hard, dry constipation where you feel no urge to go. Alumen is serially diluted, which means the starting salt is diluted over and over, with vigorous shaking at each step. At 30C, the strength most often sold, essentially none of the original salt remains. What you swallow is the sugar pellet or the water-and-alcohol carrier. Trial evidence does not separate homeopathic remedies from placebo (a dummy treatment). Alumen has a long record inside homeopathy, but traditional use is not proof that something works. That point is made once here and not repeated in every section below. How does Alumen work? Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like": a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person is given in tiny, repeatedly diluted doses to someone with similar symptoms. Practitioners say the shaking at each step leaves behind an imprint of the original salt. No accepted physical or biological explanation exists for how a dilution with no measurable starting material could act on the body. The idea has not held up in controlled testing. Low potencies such as 1X or 3X are different. These can still contain real alum, and alum is astringent, meaning it tightens and dries tissue. Any effect from those low strengths would come from the salt itself. What forms does Alumen come in? Alumen comes as small sugar pellets, liquid drops or tablets. Common strengths on shelves are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Some pharmacies also sell low X potencies such as 1X or 3X. These are far less dilute and can still contain actual alum. Plain alum is also sold as a non-homeopathic astringent, in styptic pencils, pickling powder and some mouth rinses. That is a different product and is not covered here. Where it comes from: Alum has been used for centuries as an astringent to stop bleeding, tan hides and set dye. Homeopaths took it up in the 1800s and tested it on healthy volunteers, recording symptoms such as dryness, hard stool and weak muscle tone. It appears in the classic homeopathic materia medica of the nineteenth century and has stayed in print ever since. Its standing sits inside homeopathy rather than across many healing traditions.

Helps

What does Alumen help with? Hard, dry constipation with no urge to go: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Alumen: very dry, hard stool and no feeling that you need to pass it. The match comes from nineteenth-century symptom records, not from trials. No human trial has tested Alumen for constipation. Dryness of the mouth, throat and nose: Homeopaths pick Alumen when dryness is the leading complaint. This use rests on traditional prescribing patterns only. Persistent dry mouth can point to medicines you take, diabetes or other conditions, so it is worth a check-up. Mouth ulcers and soft, spongy gums: Crude alum has a genuine astringent (tissue-tightening) action and has long been used in mouth rinses. That is the plain salt, not the homeopathic dilution. There is no trial evidence that homeopathic Alumen helps mouth ulcers. Long-running sore throat in speakers and singers: Traditional homeopathic texts suggest Alumen for a dry, raw throat in people who use their voice heavily. The evidence is limited to those older case descriptions. A sore throat lasting more than a week should be looked at by a doctor. Slack, weak-feeling muscle tone: Old provings describe heaviness and weakness, especially in the legs. This is a traditional symptom picture with no supporting research. New or worsening muscle weakness needs medical assessment, not a home remedy.

Where it comes from:

Alum has been used for centuries as an astringent to stop bleeding, tan hides and set dye.

Who should avoid Alumen?

  • Do not use if you have kidney disease, reduced kidney function, or are on dialysis (a machine that cleans your blood), because your body cannot clear aluminium well and low potencies can contain real alum
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees, because safety in pregnancy has not been studied
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a child under 2 years old, because no safe dose is established and pellets are a choking risk
  • Do not use if you are thinking of replacing prescribed treatment for a serious condition such as bowel obstruction (a blocked gut), cancer or infection
  • Do not use if you must avoid sucrose or lactose (milk sugar) completely, as the pellets are made of these sugars
  • Do not use if you have ever reacted badly to aluminium or potassium salts
  • Do not use the alcohol-based liquid drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole, or if you are avoiding alcohol
  • Never swallow crude alum powder or a styptic pencil as a medicine; it can burn the mouth and stomach and cause vomiting

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if constipation lasts more than a week, or if you have belly pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, or you have stopped passing wind. Get help the same day if a sore throat comes with a high fever, drooling or trouble swallowing or breathing. Mouth ulcers that do not heal within three weeks should always be checked. Go to an emergency department if someone swallows a large amount of crude alum, or has swelling of the lips, face or throat after any dose.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
