Strontium carbonicum

Recognised in homeopathic texts since the 1800s, but no human trial has tested this remedy and homeopathy overall does not beat placebo.

What is Strontium carbonicum? Strontium carbonicum is a homeopathic single remedy made from strontium carbonate, a white mineral salt. In homeopathy it has been used for sprains and weak ankles that keep giving way, for hot flushing of the face, and for slow healing after a bone injury. It is sold as pills, pellets, drops and creams. Like all homeopathic remedies, it is made by serial dilution. A small amount of the mineral is mixed into water or alcohol, shaken, and then diluted again and again. At 30C, the most common strength, the dilution has gone so far that essentially none of the original strontium carbonate is left in the pill. Here is the honest verdict. Homeopaths have written about this remedy for well over a century, but that long use is not proof that it works, and this is the only place in this page we will say so. No published human trial has tested Strontium carbonicum for any condition, and trials of homeopathy in general do not separate it from placebo (a dummy treatment). How does Strontium carbonicum work? There is no accepted explanation for how this remedy could work in the body. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is "like cures like": a substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to treat similar symptoms in a sick one. The second is that shaking at each dilution step leaves some kind of imprint behind. Neither idea matches what chemistry and physics tell us. At 30C there are no molecules of the source mineral left to act on your cells. So any benefit people notice is best explained by placebo (feeling better because you expect to), by normal healing over time, or by the care and attention of the consultation itself. What forms does Strontium carbonicum come in? Common forms include: Sugar pellets or small round pills, usually placed under the tongue. Liquid drops in a water and alcohol base. Tablets that dissolve in the mouth. Creams and gels that list it alongside other remedies. Strengths are written as 6C, 30C, 200C or as 3X, 6X, 12X. The higher the number, the more times it has been diluted, and the less source material it can possibly contain. Where it comes from: Strontium carbonicum was introduced into homeopathic practice in the 1800s and appears in the classic materia medica texts, including the writings of Constantine Hering and James Tyler Kent. Those texts describe it as a remedy for chronic sprains, ankles that turn easily, flushes of heat in the face, and a sense of faintness after injury or blood loss. It has always been a minor remedy rather than a first-line one. It is used today mainly by classical homeopaths who prescribe on the full picture of a person's symptoms.

Helps

What does Strontium carbonicum help with? Long-standing ankle sprains and ankles that give way: This is the picture most linked to the remedy in homeopathic books, especially where the sprain never fully healed and the ankle keeps rolling. No human trial has tested it for sprains. Most sprains improve on their own over weeks, which makes personal reports hard to read. Rest, ice, support and guided strengthening exercises have real evidence behind them. Use those first. Hot flushes and a red, burning face: Old texts describe heat rising to the face with a red, burning feeling, sometimes in older people or around menopause. There is no trial evidence for this remedy in hot flushes. Reviews of homeopathy for menopause symptoms have not shown a clear benefit over placebo. If flushes are disrupting your sleep or daily life, talk to your doctor about options that have been tested. Slow recovery after a bone injury: Homeopaths have used it where bones are slow to knit and the limb feels weak afterwards. This traditional link is easy to confuse with a separate fact: prescription strontium salts were once studied for bone density. That research says nothing about a homeopathic dilution, which contains no strontium at 30C. A bone that is healing badly needs medical review, not a home remedy. Cramping in the calves and feet: Cramps and drawing pains in the legs appear in the remedy picture in the old books. No published human study supports this use. Frequent night cramps can point to low fluids, certain medicines or a circulation problem, so they are worth mentioning to your doctor. Faintness and weakness after injury or surgery: Classical texts mention it for people who feel cold, faint and drained after blood loss or an operation. There is no trial evidence here, and this is a setting where delay can be dangerous. Feeling faint after surgery should always be reported to your surgical team.

Common forms include:

Sugar pellets or small round pills, usually placed under the tongue.

Where it comes from:

Strontium carbonicum was introduced into homeopathic practice in the 1800s and appears in the classic materia medica texts, including the writings of Constantine Hering and James Tyler Kent.

Who should avoid Strontium carbonicum?

  • Do not use if you would be taking it instead of care your doctor has advised for a serious or fast-moving illness.
  • Do not use if you take strontium ranelate or any other strontium bone product.
  • Do not use if you have had a blood clot, a stroke or a heart attack, unless your doctor agrees, because low dilutions can still contain real strontium.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease (poor kidney function), since your body clears metals like strontium more slowly.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife has said it is fine.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or young child without a doctor checking the child first.
  • Do not use if you have been told to avoid alcohol, or you take disulfiram or metronidazole, and the product is alcohol-based drops.
  • Do not use if you plan to stop or cut down a prescribed medicine in order to take it.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms get worse, or if they do not settle within a week or two.

Get seen the same day if you have severe pain, a limb you cannot put weight on, a fever, or any swelling and redness spreading around a joint.

Go to hospital straight away if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, a swollen and painful calf, sudden weakness on one side, or a swollen face, lips or throat.

Always tell your doctor and pharmacist that you are taking a homeopathic remedy, especially before surgery or when starting a new medicine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
