Cadmium sulphuratum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials on this remedy, and homeopathy overall performs like placebo; traditional tier T1, a recognised but minor

Home

What is Cadmium sulphuratum? Cadmium sulphuratum is a homeopathic remedy made from cadmium sulphide. That is a yellow mineral, also known as greenockite. It is a single remedy, picked to match your pattern of symptoms rather than a disease name. Homeopaths have used it mainly for violent vomiting, burning stomach pain, and deep tiredness during illness. It is made by diluting the mineral again and again. The mineral is ground up, then mixed with more liquid and shaken at each step. At 30C, the dilution is so extreme that almost none of the first cadmium sulphide is left in what you swallow. The honest verdict: no human trial has ever tested this remedy. Trials of homeopathy as a whole do not show it works better than placebo (a dummy treatment). It has a known place in homeopathic writing, but long use is not proof that something works — and that applies to everything on this page. How does Cadmium sulphuratum work? Homeopathy rests on one idea. A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person is said to help a sick person with the same symptoms, once it is watered down a lot. Cadmium poisoning causes violent vomiting, burning pain and collapse, so the remedy was matched to people with that picture. There is no accepted physical reason why a dilution with no source material left could act on the body. Lab work has not found a repeatable effect for such dilutions. Any change people notice is best explained by placebo, by the illness passing on its own, and by the care and attention of a long consultation. None of that is nothing — but it is not the mineral at work. What forms does Cadmium sulphuratum come in? You will find it as sugar pellets or granules, usually made with lactose (milk sugar). It also comes as small tablets that melt under the tongue, and as liquid drops in a base of water and alcohol. The strengths sold most often are 6C, 30C and 200C. LM potencies and low decimal ones, such as 3X or 6X, are made too. The low ones are the ones that may still hold real cadmium. Where it comes from: Cadmium sulphuratum came into homeopathic use in the 1800s. It followed provings (tests on healthy volunteers) in Europe and North America. It appears in the classic texts of Hering and Kent, usually tied to great weakness, coldness and vomiting that will not stop. It has always been a small, little-used remedy rather than a first-choice one. It has no history of use outside homeopathy.

Helps

What does Cadmium sulphuratum help with? Violent nausea and vomiting: This is the classic picture homeopaths match to this remedy: retching, vomiting at the sight or smell of food, and no relief afterwards. No human trial has tested it for this. Repeated vomiting can dehydrate you quickly, so it is a symptom to take to a doctor, not to self-treat. Burning stomach pain: Homeopathic texts describe a burning, raw pain in the stomach that is worse from touch and from food. There is no trial evidence here. Burning stomach pain can come from a peptic ulcer (a sore in the stomach lining) or from other conditions that need proper testing and treatment. Extreme weakness and exhaustion during illness: Old materia medica entries describe collapse, cold skin and a person too weak to move. That is a description of someone who is seriously unwell. No studies support using the remedy for this. Sudden collapse or extreme weakness is a reason to get urgent medical help. Feeling icy cold with sickness: Homeopaths use coldness, especially with vomiting, as one of the signs pointing to this remedy rather than another. This is a matching rule inside homeopathy, not a finding from research. No trial has tested it. Sickness during cancer treatment: Some homeopaths have suggested this remedy for nausea in people having chemotherapy. There is no trial evidence that it helps, and no evidence that it affects cancer itself. Do not use it in place of anti-sickness medicines or any treatment your cancer team recommends. Tell your oncology team about anything you take, because they can offer nausea treatments that are tested and effective.

Where it comes from:

Cadmium sulphuratum came into homeopathic use in the 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Cadmium sulphuratum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Cadmium sulphuratum?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because cadmium is a heavy metal that can harm a developing baby and can pass into breast milk
  • Do not use if you are thinking of giving it to a baby or young child without a doctor checking the child first
  • Do not use if you are buying a low potency such as 3X, 6X or 3C, as these may still contain real cadmium
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function (the organs that filter your blood are damaged or working poorly)
  • Do not use if you have osteoporosis (thin, weak bones) or another bone-thinning condition, because cadmium collects in bone
  • Do not use if you are vomiting repeatedly, cannot keep fluids down, are vomiting blood, or are losing weight — get medical care instead
  • Do not use if you have cancer and would be taking it instead of treatment your cancer team has advised
  • Do not use if you are having chelation therapy or being investigated for heavy-metal exposure
  • Do not use if you cannot tolerate lactose (milk sugar) and the product is a lactose pellet
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol for medical or personal reasons and the product is alcohol-based drops

When should you see a doctor?

Get urgent medical help if you are vomiting blood or something that looks like coffee grounds, if you have severe stomach pain, if you cannot keep any fluid down for more than a few hours, or if you feel faint, cold and clammy.

See a doctor soon if vomiting lasts more than 48 hours, if you are passing much less urine than usual, if you are losing weight without trying, or if you have black or tarry stools.

If you think you or a child has swallowed a low-potency cadmium product in quantity, contact your local poisons service or emergency department straight away and take the packaging with you.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
