Niccolum metallicum

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials test this remedy, and homeopathy overall does not beat placebo. Traditional tier T1: a recognised but minor

What is Niccolum metallicum? Niccolum metallicum is a homeopathic single remedy made from the metal nickel. Its Latin name is Niccolum, chemical symbol Ni, and it is also sold simply as Nickel. Homeopaths have used it mainly for headaches that keep coming back, low mood with tiredness, and stomach upset. It is made by grinding the metal with milk sugar and then diluting it again and again, with hard shaking at each step. At the common 30C strength, essentially none of the starting nickel is left. What you actually take is the sugar pill or the liquid carrier. The evidence verdict is simple. Controlled trials do not show that homeopathic remedies of this kind work better than placebo (a dummy treatment), and none has tested this remedy on its own. Traditional use is not proof that something works — that point is made here once and not repeated below. How does Niccolum metallicum work? There is no proven way for this remedy to work in the body, because at normal strengths it contains no nickel. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is that a substance which causes symptoms in a healthy person can treat those same symptoms in a sick person. The second is that diluting it further makes it act more strongly. Neither idea fits what chemistry and biology have shown. At 30C the dilution is so extreme that not even one molecule of nickel is likely to remain. Supporters say the water or sugar holds some trace or pattern of the metal, but there is no accepted evidence for this. So any benefit people report is best explained by other things: placebo (a dummy treatment), the illness settling on its own, or the time and attention given during a long consultation. What forms does Niccolum metallicum come in? It comes as small sugar pellets, larger tablets, and liquid drops. The liquids are usually kept in alcohol and water. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. Lower strengths such as 3X and 6X are less common but do exist, and only these may still contain traces of nickel. It is sold as a single remedy, meaning one substance on its own rather than a blend of several. Where it comes from: Nickel entered homeopathic use in the 1800s, as Samuel Hahnemann's system spread across Europe and North America. Homeopaths gave it to healthy volunteers and wrote down what they felt, a practice they call a proving. Those notes became its listed uses. It has never been a major remedy. It appears as a small entry in the older materia medica (the reference books that list homeopathic remedies). No tradition outside homeopathy uses it.

Helps

What does Niccolum metallicum help with? Headaches that return on a regular pattern: This is the use the old homeopathic texts mention most. They describe a headache that comes back at the same time of day or week, often with hunger. No human trial has tested this remedy for headache. If your headaches are frequent, sudden or severe, they need a real diagnosis. Low mood with tiredness after mental work: Homeopathic writing links it to people who feel drained and flat after long study or desk work. There is no trial evidence for this. Low mood that lasts more than two weeks, or that affects your sleep, work or appetite, should be checked by a doctor. Indigestion and heartburn: The materia medica describes sour burping, a heavy feeling after eating, and hunger that returns quickly. No human study supports this use. Heartburn that happens most days, or that comes with trouble swallowing or weight loss, needs medical review. Dry cough at night: Older texts note a dry, tickly cough that gets worse when lying down. There is no trial evidence. A cough lasting more than three weeks, or one with blood, fever or breathlessness, should be seen by a doctor. Eye strain with blurred vision: Some provings mention tired eyes and blurred sight after close work. This has never been tested in people. Any new or sudden change in vision is a reason to get your eyes checked quickly, not to self-treat.

Where it comes from:

Nickel entered homeopathic use in the 1800s, as Samuel Hahnemann's system spread across Europe and North America.

Who should avoid Niccolum metallicum?

  • Do not use if you are treating a serious illness such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes or an infection — this remedy cannot replace treatment that works.
  • Do not use if you are having a medical emergency, such as chest pain, sudden severe headache, weakness on one side, or trouble breathing — call emergency services instead.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to nickel and the product is a low strength such as 3X or 6X, because these can still hold traces of the metal.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it — ask for a lactose-free form.
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol, for health, recovery or personal reasons, and the product is liquid drops preserved in alcohol.
  • Do not use if you are taking disulfiram or metronidazole (drugs that make alcohol cause flushing and sickness) and the product is alcohol based.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a doctor who knows your history says it is fine — safety has not been studied.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child without first asking a doctor, as choking on pellets and missed diagnosis are real risks.
  • Do not use if you work with nickel metal or nickel salts and have a cough, nosebleeds or breathing trouble from that work — breathing in nickel compounds at work is linked to lung and nose cancer, and you need an occupational doctor, not a remedy.
  • Do not use if you are thinking of stopping a prescribed medicine to try it — never swap proven treatment for this.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if the symptom you are treating does not clearly improve within two weeks, or if it gets worse at any point.

Get help the same day for a headache that starts suddenly and severely, a headache with fever, a stiff neck or a rash, coughing up blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, or any new change in your vision.

Also speak to a doctor if you get a rash, itching or swelling after taking any form of this remedy, or if low mood lasts more than two weeks or brings thoughts of harming yourself. If you have those thoughts, seek help straight away.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
