What is Manganum aceticum? Manganum aceticum is a homeopathy remedy. It is made from manganese acetate, a salt of the metal manganese. Its Latin name is Mangani acetas. It is a single remedy, which means one source, not a blend. Homeopaths have used it for sore joints, bone pain, ear trouble, and a dry cough that is worse in cold, damp air. The salt is watered down over and over to make the remedy. At 30C almost none of the salt is left. Trials do not show it beats a dummy pill, and long use is not proof that a remedy works. How does Manganum aceticum work? There is no known way for a 30C remedy to act in the body, because no starting salt is left in it. Homeopathy holds that a substance which causes signs in a well person can ease like signs in a sick one, once it is watered down. It also holds that more watering makes a remedy act more strongly. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry or the body. Any change you notice is most likely placebo, which means feeling better because you expect to. Many complaints also settle on their own with time. What forms does Manganum aceticum come in? Small sugar pellets are the most common form sold. Liquid drops and a powder ground with milk sugar (called a trituration) are also made. Potency labels run from low, such as 3X and 6X, to high, such as 30C and 200C. Low labels hold more of the starting salt than high ones. Liquid drops often contain alcohol. Where it comes from: Manganese salts came into homeopathy in the early 1800s. Healthy-volunteer tests, called provings, were written up by Samuel Hahnemann's circle. Constantine Hering and later writers added more notes. The remedy has stayed a small, second-line entry in homeopathic books. It is far less used than staples such as Arnica or Nux vomica.

Helps

What does Manganum aceticum help with? Joint and bone pain: This is the best-known use in homeopathic books. Writers link it to aching in the shin bones and heels that is worse in wet weather. No human trial has tested Manganum aceticum for joint or bone pain. If a joint stays hot, swollen or stiff, see a doctor for a diagnosis. Earache and ear noises: Old texts describe it for dull hearing, ringing sounds, and ear pain that is worse in damp weather. There is no trial evidence for this use. Ear pain with fever, discharge or sudden hearing loss needs medical care, not a home remedy. Hoarseness and long-lasting laryngitis (sore, swollen voice box): Homeopaths have used it for a rough, tired voice that is worse in cold air and better in warmth. No published human trial supports this. Hoarseness lasting more than three weeks should always be checked by a doctor. Dry cough that is worse in cold, damp air: Books describe a tickling, dry cough that eases when the person lies down. No trial has tested the remedy for cough. A cough with blood, breathlessness or weight loss needs prompt medical care. Tiredness and pale skin linked to anaemia (low red blood cells): Nineteenth-century writers grouped manganese with iron as a remedy for pale, weak patients. This is a traditional idea, not a tested one. Anaemia has many causes and needs blood tests and proper treatment. Slow-healing skin sores: Some materia medica entries mention chronic ulcers and rough, cracked skin. No human study has looked at this. A sore that will not heal, especially on the foot or leg, should be seen by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Manganese salts came into homeopathy in the early 1800s. Healthy-volunteer tests, called provings, were written up by Samuel Hahnemann's circle. Constantine Hering and later writers added more notes.

The remedy has stayed a small, second-line entry in homeopathic books. It is far less used than staples such as Arnica or Nux vomica.

Who should avoid Manganum aceticum?

  • Do not use it in place of treatment your doctor has advised for infection, anaemia (low red blood cells), a bone problem or a joint disease
  • Do not use low potencies such as 3X or 6X for long periods, because they can add manganese to your body and manganese can harm the nerves and brain
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without asking your doctor first, as extra manganese is not safe for a baby
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child unless a doctor who knows the child says it is fine
  • Do not use low potencies if you have liver disease or poor bile flow, because manganese then builds up more easily
  • Do not use low potencies if you already take a manganese supplement, or if you work with welding fumes, dry-cell batteries or manganese ore
  • Do not use the alcohol-based drops if you avoid alcohol, or if you take disulfiram or metronidazole (drugs that react badly with alcohol)
  • Avoid the sugar pellets in large amounts if you have diabetes (high blood sugar)

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms get worse, or if they do not settle within a week or two.

Get medical help quickly for a fever with earache, discharge from the ear, sudden hearing loss, a hot or badly swollen joint, coughing up blood, breathlessness, a sore that will not heal, or a hoarse voice lasting more than three weeks.

Stop the remedy and speak to a doctor if you notice a new tremor, stiff or slow movements, clumsiness, or a change in your mood or memory while taking a low potency.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
