Zincum metallicum

A long-standing staple of one tradition (T2), but human trials do not separate it from placebo, so the evidence grade is D.

What is Zincum metallicum? Zincum metallicum is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from metallic zinc, a soft blue-grey metal. Homeopaths choose it for people who feel worn out, jumpy and unable to keep still. The best known use is for legs that will not stay still at night. It is also given for twitching, fidgeting, and a heavy, drained feeling after too little sleep. The metal is diluted step by step, over and over. At 30C, a very common strength, no zinc is left in the pill. Trials do not tell this remedy apart from a dummy pill, and long use in a tradition is not proof that it works. How does Zincum metallicum work? No one has shown a way this remedy could act on the body. That is the honest answer. Homeopathy rests on an old idea called "like cures like". A substance that causes signs in a well person is said to clear the same signs in a sick one. Zinc poisoning can cause twitching and restless limbs, so zinc is matched to those signs. The metal is then diluted again and again, with shaking at each step. Homeopaths say this makes it act more strongly. Chemistry gives no support for that idea. At 30C nothing of the starting metal remains. Any change you notice is most likely placebo (a dummy effect), natural healing, or simply time passing. What forms does Zincum metallicum come in? You will most often see tiny sugar pellets or small round pills. Liquid drops and melt-in-the-mouth tablets are also sold. Strengths are written as a number and a letter, such as 6X, 6C or 30C. The letter and number tell you how far it was diluted. A higher number means more dilution, not more metal. Do not mix this up with zinc supplement tablets. Those are sold in milligrams and really do contain zinc. Where it comes from: Zinc came into homeopathy in the early 1800s. Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, gave it to healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those old notes still guide how the remedy is picked today. Homeopaths file it under worn-out nerves and restless limbs. It has stayed in steady use in this one tradition for about 200 years .

Helps

What does Zincum metallicum help with? Restless legs at night: This is the classic homeopathic picture for the remedy: legs that jerk, twitch or must keep moving once you lie down. No trial has tested Zincum metallicum for restless legs in people. Restless legs can also come from low iron or a nerve problem, so ask your doctor for a check. Muscle twitching and fidgeting: Homeopaths match it to small twitches in the face, hands or legs, often worse when tired. This comes from old symptom notes, not from trials. New or spreading twitching needs a doctor, not a remedy. Feeling worn out and drained: Old texts describe a person who is too tired to rest well and feels prickly and irritable. There is no trial evidence that the remedy helps tiredness. Ongoing tiredness can have many causes worth testing for. Trouble settling down to sleep: It is chosen when the body will not go quiet at bedtime. Evidence for this use is absent in people. Simple steps such as a set bedtime and less screen time at night have better support. Leg cramps and growing pains in children: Some homeopaths give it for night-time leg pain in children. No trial supports this. Talk to your doctor before giving any remedy to a child. Headache with a tired, foggy feeling: The old notes describe a dull head that feels worse after wine or after missing sleep. This is traditional matching only. A new, severe or sudden headache is a reason to get medical help.

Where it comes from:

Zinc came into homeopathy in the early 1800s. Samuel Hahnemann, the German doctor who founded homeopathy, gave it to healthy people and wrote down what they felt.

Those old notes still guide how the remedy is picked today. Homeopaths file it under worn-out nerves and restless limbs.

It has stayed in steady use in this one tradition for about 200 years.

Who should avoid Zincum metallicum?

  • Do not use it in place of a medicine your doctor has prescribed, and never stop a prescribed drug to take it.
  • Do not rely on it for restless legs or twitching until a doctor has checked you for causes such as low iron, diabetes or a nerve problem.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child without asking your doctor first.
  • Do not take the liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, or if you take disulfiram or metronidazole (drugs that react badly with alcohol).
  • Do not take the sugar pills if milk sugar (lactose) upsets your stomach; ask the pharmacist for a lactose-free form.
  • Never swallow metallic zinc, zinc powder or any industrial zinc product; only the prepared remedy is meant to be taken.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your restless legs or twitching are new, getting worse, or stopping you from sleeping most nights. Also get checked if you feel very tired for more than a few weeks, notice weakness or numbness in a limb, or your legs cramp badly at night. Go straight to urgent care if you have sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a fit, or a severe headache that comes on fast.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
